5CD Spirit Box, It Shall Be: The Ode & Epic Recordings 1968-1972, Planned For March

Spirit was a staple of FM music for the duration of their start-up in 1967 through roughly 1975.  During that time, the band released six classic albums  including the double set, Spirit of ’76. (That album charted but the fans were quickly losing interest. Personally, I thought the album was excellent. I LOVED “America The Beautiful/The Times They Are A’Changin'”, and the unreal psychedelic cover of “Like A Rolling Stone”!) But before they began to dissipate, they left five memorable sets.

On March 16, Esoteric Records teams with PledgeMusic to release a 5CD Boxed set that will feature all five Spirit albums from their years with Ode Records, and Epic Records. Those include Spirit (1968), The Family That Plays Together (1968), and Clear (1969), all with Ode Records. With Epic Records there were Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus (1970), and Feedback (1972).

Each album in this clamshell box will be newly remastered. Even better (and worth the price of admission) is the inclusion of the Mono mix of the 1968 self-titled debut. In addition, the original Stereo mix for The Family That Plays Together, the soundtrack to Model Shop, and the collection of outtakes, singles, and alternate mixes previously released for the 1991 TimeCircle compilation.

This set is being called It Shall Be – The Ode & Epic Recordings 1968-1972. I will include a booklet with essay, notes, credits, photos, and archive interviews with Spirit.

Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep) To Release New Anthology CD, Rare & Timeless

Progressive music took many, many turns as the ’60s turned into the ’70s. One such band that helped shape genre shifts was Uriah Heep. Formed in 1969. By 1970, this turnstile band (boasting of several classic-era line-ups over time, had released its debut, Very ‘Eavy Very ‘Umble. By 1973, Uriah Heep had released Sweet Freedom as a new signing to Warner Brothers, with the release of their successful single, “Stealin'”.

Between their debut and Sweet Freedom, the band released four other classics (Salisbury – 1971, Look At Yourself – 1971, Demons & Wizards – 1972, The Magician’s Birthday – 1972). With Demons & Wizards, the band had enormous US success with the extraction of “Easy Livin'” as a single. The songwriter for both of these mentioned Uriah Heep hits was Ken Hensley.

Ken Hensley left the confines of Uriah Heep in 1980 after the release of Conquest (1980). With only Mick Box left from the classic lineups, and the changing musical climate, Hensley felt the ongoing directional changes were not in standing with his vision. But before he left, Ken Hensley had dabbled with two solo releases (the incredible Proud Words On a Dusty Shelf (1973), and Eager To Please (1975)). After his departure, he released Free Spirit (1981). From there, Hensley, in addition to his many band collaborations, released ten solo titles.

On March 30, in conjunction with PledgeMusic and BMG UK, Ken Hensley will release a personally curated compilation of fifteen songs, some previously unreleased, and three new tracks (two brand new compositions, and one a re-record of “Lady In Black”, a Uriah Heep song from Salisbury). This new anthology will be called Rare & Timeless.

01 – Free Me (rare Russian release)
02 – Send Me An Angel (previously unreleased)
03 – If I Had The Time
04 – Guilty
05 – The Last Dance (previously unreleased)
06 – Mine (newly recorded for this anthology)
07 – I Did It All
08 – I Close My Eyes (*rare release*)
09 – Take & Take
10 – The Return
11 – Beyond The Starz
12 – Fortune
13 – Lady In Black
14 – The Longest Night (newly recorded for this anthology)
15 – Epilogue (newly recorded for this anthology)

Stranger Than Fiction, 1994 Bad Religion Classic To Be Reissued

LA Punk in the formative ’80s was a force to be reckoned with. It was as different as night and day from NYC Punk, but that didn’t change its power and strength. One of those LA bands (and there were many) was Bad Religion.

Beginning in 1982 with the release of their debut, their recorded output eventually numbered sixteen albums, their last being True North (2013). One of the classic sets was Stranger Than Fiction released back in 1994. It was their large label debut having been signed to Atlantic Records. It was their only album to reach Gold status. There were four singles pulled from the album. Stranger Than Fiction is still considered their best release.

Stranger Than Fiction had assist from luminaries like Tim Armstrong (Rancid), who sang on “Television”, Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), vocals on “Marked”, and the legendary Wayne Kramer (MC5) who contributed guitar on “Incomplete”.

On March 9, Epitaph Records (who eventually came to control the entire catalog) will release a newly remastered (by Bob Ludwig) edition of Stranger Than Fiction. This remaster will be reissued on CD, DD, and on two versions of vinyl (black, gray).

Tom Waits Asylum Classics To Be Remastered For CD, DD, and LP

On December 1 of 2017, Anti Records reissued Tom Waits’  2004 classic Real Gone album for CD and LP. We also learned then that Anti would be re-releasing Wait’s first four albums on vinyl LP. But now I’m  getting classic news concerning early Tom Waits titles eliciting a HUGE YESSsss(!) from me. The remastered LPs were originally planned for December 21 (at the time). But things change.

On March 23, Anti Records will reissue classic Tom Waits titles from the ’70s during his Asylum Records years. There will be no bonus tracks, etc but the albums to be listed will feature newly remastered tracks.

Watch for CD and DD of Closing Time (1973) on the date announced, with a 180g-weight vinyl LP planned for March 9.

Other titles are slated for CD and DD reissue that include The Heart Of Saturday Night (1974), Nighthawks At The Diner (1975, Live), Small Change (1976), Foreign Affairs (1977), Blue Valentine (1978), and Heartattack and Vine (1980). Each CD pre-order will provide eventual DD links for the same album.

It appears that the remastered LP editions (with the exception of Closing Time) will follow soon enough.

Planned for 180g-weight remastered vinyl LP later in 2018 is Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards. No date has been given for it.

[UPDATE II] WISHBONE ASH 30CD BOX – THE VINTAGE YEARS 1970-1991

We now know that this limited Edition 30CD The Vintage Years 1970-1991 Box set featuring a TON of classic Wishbone Ash material including bonus session tracks will be released on April 20 of 2018. The set is limited to only 2500 copies worldwide and will carry a price tag of $337 (US), and £250 (UK).  This set is currently on pre-order.

We also know a bit more about inclusions. The set will not only contain remastered albums (many from original source tapes, as I’ve long understood Wishbone Four, and There’s The Rub original tapes to be considered gone for good) from the Wishbone Ash debut through Strange Affair albums, but also a wealth of bonus material. You can expect ‘rare album outtakes, B-sides, and 12 previously unreleased studio tracks’, all slipcased within mini-LP cardboard gatefold sleeves.

The Live collection will include the first  Live Dates album, Live Dates Volume Two, and Live in Tokyo. The additional live sets include eight previously unreleased live shows, all between the golden era of 1973 through 1980:

  • Portsmouth Guildhall 1973 (2CD) from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour.
  • Southampton University 1973 from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour.
  • Edinburgh Usher Hall 1976 from the New England tour.
  • Marquee Club 1977 from the Front Page News tour.
  • Newcastle City Hall 1977 from the Front Page News tour.
  • Bournemouth Winter Gardens 1978 (2CD) from the No Smoke Without Fire tour.
  • Guildford Civic Hall 1980 (2CD) from the Just Testing tour.
  • Chelmsford Odeon 1980 from the Blowin’ Free tour.

We know that tracks from the Portsmouth Guildhall show were used in the original Live Dates set. Here, we get the entire show over 2CDs. Unfortunately, that’s all from that album. (This means that a Deluxe Edition of Live Dates is STILL a viable grail set with ALL shows remastered and presented, along with a rich booklet of remembrances, and memorabilia included. C’mon Universal, Martin, and Andy! Please?!)

The Box will also include 156-page book of photos, memories, and other goodies. A 36-poster book is added as are four fold-out posters reproductions of original posters for: Christmas at the Palace Dec 1973, Live Dates European tour – Hamburg Musikhalle 1974, Europe 1975 tour, and the Front Page News tour – Empire Pool Wembley 1977.

A facsimile promo pack from MCA is stuffed into this box along with a 7″ flexidisc of “Blind Eye”. To finish the box, signed photos of the band members will be provided.

Nightwish To Release Career Spanning Set, Decades: An Archive Of Song (1996-2015)

For more than twenty years, the Finnish band, Nightwish, has helped to nurture the symphonic metal genre. Started in 1996, Nightwish has produced eight studio albums, the last being Endless Forms Most Beautiful in 2015. Their vocalists have been female since their inception. The first, Tarja Turunen stayed until 2005, where she left for a solo career given her magnificent vocal range. Today, the vocalist is Floor Jansen, whose vocal style is different and yet quite adaptive to multiple applications of style.

Nightwish has proven successful worldwide since their Dark Passion Play set from 2007 where they entered every chart available and the US chart for the first time.  Since, their music has become widely accepted with subsequent albums topping charts at higher and higher points.

On March 9, Nuclear Blast Records will release a 2CD compilation of twenty-two songs from the catalog of Nightwish. This collection is being called Decades: An Archive of Song (1996-2005). Decades will be released as 2CD (jewelcase), 2CD (digipak), a 2CD Earbook Box, DD, 3LP Limited Edition (500) Gold vinyl Box, 3LP Limited Edition (500) Silver vinyl Box, and a 3LP Black vinyl Box. The Digipak, Earbook Box, and Vinyl 3LP Boxes will follow on March 16.

Massive 2CD/2DVD/LP Box Set For Fish Out Of Water by Chris Squire

With the release of Fragile, YES became the premier definition of Progressive Rock. With a series of successful and, in some cases, expanded, albums after Fragile (Close To The Edge is considered one of the genre’s finest creations, while Tales From Topographical Oceans is considered its heaviest), the success of Yes allowed the band certain freedoms not usually afforded to most. Individual projects.

During a period of inactivity, each member of Yes released solo works. For Chris Squire, that was Fish Out Of Water. Fish Out Of Water was well-received by fans, charting well in charts.

On April 27, Esoteric Recordings will revisit this classic 1975 solo album with a massive Limited Edition Box of the album filled to the literal brim with a wealth of material including a 5.1 remix of the album, something that Chris Squire was interested in.

The new edition of Fish Out of Water will feature a brand new remix AND remaster of the album, both desired aspects of any reissue. But this one goes even further to make Fish Out Of Water a definitive set worth owning among fans of the work.

This Box will present 2CDs, 2DVDs, a 180g-weight vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve, two 7″ vinyl singles, a fold-out poster (in the LP sleeve), and a 36-page book with new essays, uncovered photos, and plenty of information concerning this classic album.

The Stereo remix is created by Jakko Jakszyk and is found on CD1. The Stereo remaster of the album is found on CD2 along with four bonus inclusions (single mixes of “Lucky Seven” and “Silently Falling”, and two recorded songs with Alan White, “Return With The Fox”, and “Return Of The Fox”).

The included DVDs have gems as well. DVD1 presents both 5.1 and  Hi-resolution Stereo, both at 96kHz/24-bit, and both created by Jakko Jakszyk, In addition, the Paschal Byrne remastered Stereo remaster is also presented in hi-res 96kHz/24-bit clarity. DVD2 provides a collection of visual content including interviews and a Chris Squire audio commentary. The LP is as expected, and the two 7″ singles in picture sleeves. Each of the singles include the bonus tracks found  on CD2.

Personally, I love undertakings such as these that are targeted to the serious fan. Not only do we get definitive sets likely to never be matched in such detail again, but a classic revisited is always a great thing.

Enjoy, fans!

New Joan Baez Album, Whistle Down The Wind, Arriving

For decades, and especially at the beginning of the Rock phenomena that many of us find a way of life these days, there was Joan Baez. Her first album was released back in 1960, a light-year of time ago for many of us. From there, her fame grew. By 1970, she had a strong hit with a cover of The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. Her version is still considered a strong version of one the great singles of all time.

Over her lifetime, Joan Baez has released over twenty albums. During the ’60s and ’70s, many of her sets were consistently charting high until time and the political environment had found little use of her activism and voice. Great albums like Diamonds & Rust (1975) were incredible productions. Regardless, as legend, Joan Baez continued to tour, record, and release new music. Her last album, Day After Tomorrow (2008), charted respectably.

On March 2, Joan Baez will release her newest album, Whistle Down The Wind. It is a mix of covers and originals in a collection of ten songs. Two tracks (including the cover song) were penned by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. Another is a Mary Chapin Carpenter song (“The Things We Are Made Of”) done in the inimitable Baez fashion. Listening to the title track, I feel confident that Whistle Down the Wind will be a beautiful Joan Baez addition to a strong library.

Whistle Down The Wind will be released on CD and vinyl LP, as well as in the DD format.
