The Black Circle

…Hey ho, and welcome to another Black Circle. Sit down, because I’m kicking off this column with two very unfortunate items…

…Remember those Dylan albums Classic Records are prepping for release later this year? Well, try not to, because they ain’t happening. They are now canceled and merely a might have been. Word running about is that Sony is considering trying out these vinyl issues themselves, but don’t get too excited until some official announcement makes the rounds. Let’s hope these see the light of day one way or another, as a new, quality vinyl reissue series would make nice counterparts to the excellent SACD releases we all know and love…

…You may have spied some exciting notices from Japan about an analogue reissue of the complete Beatles catalogue on vinyl, but keep those salt grains handy. Most sources I’m scanning are saying these are the same old digital masters used earlier last decade and still readily available at many dealers. Hey, some of them aren’t bad, especially post-Revolver albums, but really, there are plenty of great analogue Beatles vinyl out there, even if most are now unfortunately priced into the upper stratosphere. Find some great UK or German issues…

…So, anything good to report? Yep! Classical music fans will rejoice to learn that Speaker Corner Records will be reissuing the Mercury Living Presence catalog to vinyl. Keep your eyes open for these!…

…I’m hearing that those new Rhino vinyl reissues were mastered by Kevin Gray. That translates to, “buy those suckers!” Me, I can’t wait to hear the Elvis Costello

Classic Records have reissues of David & David’s Boomtown and Toni Child’s Union coming soon…

…If you’re searching for great vinyl, I’ve two more great places you should check out. Better Records, at www.dccblowout.com, carries loads of great newer and older releases, while Acoustic Sounds (www.acousticsounds.com) specializes in new stuffs…

…If you are a fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival and haven’t picked up the stellar Analogue Productions reissues, mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray at the premiere AcousTech Mastering, well, then, I have to wonder how much of a fan you really are. They are fantastic…

…Fans of the new Kill Bill, Vol. 1 should check out the excellent, eclectic soundtrack already out there on wax…

…More releases seeing the vinyl light of day later this month include Kid Rock’s self-titled album, Meshell Ndegeocello’s Comfort Woman, and Missy Elliott’s This Is Not a Test!

…Well, that’s all this time around. Keep spinning that wax, and I’ll catch you next time…
