Voodoo Glow Skulls - Steady As She Goes Reviewed by Matt Rowe on June 24, 2002 I love this CD. Victory Records' Voodoo Glow Skulls is a rhythmic pounder. Cutting their teeth on Ska music with a strong nod to the driving punk sound, VSG have released an album designed to please. "Steady As She Goes", their sixth album is a fast paced, rockin', gem. Hailing from Riverside, CA. and formed by the three brothers Casillas with a buddy, Jerry O'Neill, VGS have created an unusual mix of ska, punk and, what's that? A horn section? Yep, you heard that one. So, how cool is that? You kind of have to hear for yourself. Already met with critical success, having toured with the likes of 311 and Offspring, the coolness of VGS is not lost on those that have already been initiated. Their skill and effectiveness is not lost on Victory Records who have latched onto a great thing with these guys. This CD, 13 tracks in all, is the aural equivalent of an earthquake and makes you want to act like one. From the heart pumping "BasketBall Song",which paces from wild to insane as the singer screams for the ball to the ultra cool, unlisted bonus track, "Lil Red Riding Hood" that sounds like its performed by a 70s metal band. With guitars that race like revving hotrods, vocals from brutalized throats that need message therapy and primal drumming, it all makes for a rousing collection of well written songs. And a horn section seals the deal on what becomes unique and fun. The CD features inpeccable production and a well designed folded insert with complete lyrics and extensive notes and credits. Add a party and everyone goes home happy. Enjoy it.
