With the advent of the desktop PC (or Mac) and the Internet, making music has never been easier. With the proper tools and cheap CDs, decent music…hell, ALL kinds of music, whether good or bad, can be made with ease, in a living room of an apartment. I preface this review of Springteen (the misspell of Springsteen a deliberate marketing ploy to bring attention by way of Google?) by the band named Victorian Halls with this bit to state how music can be easily dispersed by an unsigned band. Being signed to a major label is still the one indicator that a band has “made it.” At the very least, it allows for future bragging (“…our album was released on Atlantic Records…,” with the part of only 9,000 copies being sold and the band dropped soon after never being mentioned).
Victorian Halls is a loud, punk-pop band from out of Chicago, who had placed 2nd in a Spin Magazine-sponsored contest in a live setting (Music Nation). The band is fronted by a vocal that makes them sound like a frenetic Beastie Boys, especially in the first track, “Pop, Pop, Pop.” This release is a 7-song EP that drops a few interesting compositions that include “It’s a Ghost Town, Alleiluuya.”
It’s a vast musical world out there. |
