Like a cut in the Windows Vista commercial where there’s a lot of WOWs uttered, I’m uttering mine now. Kelly Sweet, an 18 year old newcomer to the recording world, has been neck-deep in music since age 3. In addition to all of that training, she can sing in 3 languages (French, Italian, Sanskrit). Invited to every event that you can think of, Kelly Sweet is definitely in her time.
With a voice that is oftentimes ethereal, Kelly Sweet’s voice can cross several genres effortlessly. On her debut album, We Are One, she has 12 songs including a cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” singing it in a way that is vastly different than any you have ever imagined the song to sound like. When you can turn a hard-rock song into an ethereal beauty, making the song your own in the process, the gears are turning. The single from the album, “Raincoat,” while good, is not even the best song on the album.
This new talent is one that is difficult to write about because there are few words that can describe it. Think Adult Contemporary, mix in shoegazer-like vocals, a soft play of music, and we merely create the border of the tapestry that is Kelly Sweet. I suggest that you head over to her MySpace page, hear for yourself, then click on over to Amazon and snag a copy of We Are One.
With the right nurturing, Kelly Sweet can make a big lifetime splash. Keep an ear out for “Dream On.”
