Starsailor is the offspring of the Waterboys, early Waterboys. With Walsh's vocal style so much like Mike Scott, there can be little denial. This doesn't mean that Starsailor is derivative. On the contrary. They have developed into quite a nice unit with some very good folk/rock songs. I didn't take an immediate liking to the band, however, and I still must listen several more times before I admit to liking them enough to want to purchase their next CD. But sometimes that is how you become endeared to a band.

And I have great respect for the music that this band has created. In lots of cases, you hear music that serve no purpose and you know that no one can seriously adopt it. With this band, that assertion cannot be made. While Starsailor may not be my style, I can see why they may be someone else's.

As for the music, Starsailor has opted to not crowd the music with top heavy sounds. They have, instead, utilized a scaled back sound with basic elements of conventional bands, especially one with folk/rock leanings. The singing provides emotion that draws you into the song itself.

'Alcoholic', one of the better issues from this CD has already enjoyed commercial success, the same that is currently true for 'Poor Misguided Fool'. Another above average tune, 'Good Souls' express good things from this band.

I don't think that this band is for everybody. But they have nominal success and some critical praise in their favour. I wish them well.
