01/01/2003 6:30p PT Matt Rowe - Reviewer Somehow Hollow is a formation of the remains of Grade. Formed as a side project, Somehow Hollow struggled as it's members flitted in every direction, sparing little time for the band's natural progression. As fate would have it, the band finally found itself as a viable unit that could go ahead with its plans. Signed on the strength of a four song demo, Somehow Hollow finally had a home with Victory Records. The 11 songs contained on this disc represent a melodic approach to punk. With lyrics that touch heavily on spurned love and the ensuing feelings of depression that follows such a loss, "Busted Wings & Rusted Halos" explore heartbreak and separation. However, their hard-edged instrumentation give the sadness a lift, somehow accentuating the despair. With mournful vocals and expertly played 'crying' leads, the band succeeds in communication. Every song on this disc is tightly crafted. As good as most of the songs are , there are standout tracks. The perfect "Never Let You Go". Filled with hops between tasty pop guitar and driving crunch, the song is the obvious single choice. "Busted Stereos and Myself" possesses a heart and sounds in tandem with some classic old rock. The disc comes with a 10 page foldout insert that provides all the lyrics, credits, and photos of the band. The stereo mix is well produced. A good effort with all the trimmings. Overall, with a disc that is strong on harmonies and melodies yet uncompromising in it's adopted style, "Busted Wings and Rusted Halos" is a good effort by a maturing band. One to keep your eye on.
