01/12/2003 9:00p PT Matt Rowe - Reviewer The Snowdogs have put together a very melodic and accessible album of quality tunes. Music of this genre have a tendency to borrow heavily from counterparts and therefore are 'here today, gone tomorrow' . But Snowdogs show a high level of talent in many directions. Sure, they borrow. But what shows through is the quality of the styles that permeate the songs. Not only have Snowdogs made a genuine show of things, they have the teeth to hang around for awhile. In fact, they have the claws to be around for a long time to come. The disc's 12 songs have a lot going for them. They incorporate a wide variety of guitar styles, mix in pretty good vocals, with a strong understanding of what makes a song good enough to listen to many times over. There's a transcendent quality which is a technical phrase for pure magic and this disc is full of that. Listen to the mix of "Hour of Sunshine" and you're listening to a highly polished tune with horns and great lyrics. This song would be at home in the 70s and is a great song now. Like "Hour of Sunshine", the rest of the disc's songs rock. "Freedom for Everyone" is another strong track that spills radio potential from the speakers at a fast pace much like the REM flavoured "End of the World". There is a tasty cover of Paul Simon's "Boy in the Bubble" that sears. The rest? Oh, hell yeah! There is a sense of thought about circumstance that weaves in and out through the songs. It's very refreshing to hear a socially conscious band with such skill at song-smithing that points to a future of better stuff down the road. Snowdogs are a real deal and is well worth your time and dollars. These boys hail from the UK, which is no surprise given their level of talent. I've always felt that the best just seems to come from England. The quality of music is a fresher one and is seen in many past and present bands from Europe. The disc supplies a 8 page insert with lyrics, photos, and credits. The production is smooth and well mixed. These guys rock in everyway with something for everyone on this 2nd effort from the band. With a pocketful of radio friendly and memorable songs, snowdogs will be around for a long time. You might as well get in on the ground floor now and be able to say that you listened to them very early in their career. High fives to Victory for a great pickup in Snowdogs. These guys will be producing spectacular stuff in the future. And I'll be there to buy them. Copyright © 2002-2003 Matthew Rowe. All rights reserved. |
