Libertango is truly the fusion of a world of different genres.
Grounded in Irish/Celtic roots, with acoustic guitars and Sharon Shannon's accordion the primary instruments, the 13-track album features a number of traditional songs with modern arrangements. But, or every "The Seven Rejoices of Mary", sung by Sinead O'Connor, there's a "What You Make It (da da da da)" as performed by rapper Marvel. Picture it: fiddles and accordions and all the stuff that makes for a really good reel or jig, interlaced with smooth saxophones and raps about making every moment count. Unconventional? Very. Enjoyable? Immensely.
Other highlights include the title track, a dark, smoky back alley bar of a song if there ever was one, as sung by the late Kirsty MacColl, the traditional "Anachie Gordon", by O'Connor and the pillowy soft and sweet "All the Ways You Wander" performed by Shannon's current touring vocalist Pauline Scanlon.
Libertango is an album that can be enjoyed by many, from those looking for more traditional Irish/Celtic fare to those looking for something with a most unusual edge. Highly recommended.
