11/26/2002 7:30p PT Duane Leyva - Reviewer The River City Rebels from Burlington, Vermont reveal themselves as increasingly energetic punkers, seemingly making history repeat itself. The River City Rebels return to mayhem with *No Good*No Time*No Pride*. A twelve song revivalist effort, early 80s style, with modern day production best describes this what this wild bunch from Burlington have created. With three bar guitar chords and fluffy drum beats neatly and powerfully contained in two minute song capsules, I almost laced up for a pogo dash. The song, "Pass the Basket" clearly showcases highly developed and finely tuned old school punk with it's full bodied guitars and drum, direct vocals, and horns to round out the tunes. "Johnny AKA" sounds like a modern day version of "Tommy Gun" from The Clash. As for the rest of the songs on this album, well.. I’m sorry to say that they end up sounding like rehashed "White Riot" from the first Clash album with the exception of "No Pride", which pounds out an intro that removes the conscious influences that haunt this band. After reading the band's bio sheet, and as noted on the disc, this album took a cost cutting 12 days to record. While I'm sure this maximizes profits and makes Victory very happy, it feels as if River City Rebels would have profited from a longer date at the studio with longer rehearsal times. With some bands this time frame is very effective, just not for this RCR disc. "*No Good* No Time* No Pride* " really lacked overall ingenuity and depth, costing them lost points in freshness and originality. This style of music was developed over 20 years ago. Even then, those musicians eventually evolved into more creative and intriguing artists. Let's hope River City Rebels do the same. PRODUCTION & PACKAGING On this disc, River City Rebels provide you with very well programmed and clear video footage of the band, on and off stage. You'll need Apple's Quicktime software installed on your PC in order to watch the provided sequences. This film is a must for River City Rebels fans. This is a very neat concept and I do hope that most bands catch on with what RCR has done with this cool addition. The disc comes cased in a foldout digipak. Within the foldouts are band photos and lyrics along with credits and thanks. Copyright © 2002 Matthew Rowe. All rights reserved. Site is designed for 1024x768 resolution. |
