I know. My children attended this film with me and went on to see it multiples times on their own, taking their friends thus creating a new wave of fans.
Now, Grease enjoys its 25th Anniversary with a new Deluxe Edition release from Polydor Records. Only this time around, the music has been remastered and an additional disc of music has been included with the original material. The Bonus disc provides 12 extras that are variations and remixes and delivered to make the discs not only a nice addition to your library but also to extend the fun that Grease has a habit of distributing.
There isn’t much to discuss here about the original album. Many of you reading this review are all too familiar with the songs. The remastered edition provides the songs with sonic clarity technologically achievable in this age and therefore revitalizes old classics. The items of interest here are found on the second disc with its variations of those songs.
This bonus disc revisits the songs but in new formats. Disc 2 begins with karaoke versions of “Grease”, “Summer Nights”, “Hopelessly Devoted To You”, “You’re The One That I Want”, and “Sandy”. These five songs are listed as sing-a-long versions and have the main vocals removed to facilitate your own enjoyment. And we all know how many folks like to sing a long with the Grease songs. No? Whatever. Regardless, that’s what these songs are here for. You’re the star with professional backup and original music accompanying you. It’s all fun. Fans will thoroughly enjoy the karaoke element of “Summer Nights” as it effectively removes the main vocals of Travolta and Newton-John while leaving in ALL of the rest including the “tell me more, tell me more” choruses. Fans will also have the same type of fun with “You’re The One That I Want” as the same elements are there.
Other bonuses include the original single version of “Greased Lightnin’” and a short 20 second “Rydell Fight Song”, an unreleased instrumental locked away in the Grease vaults. The rest of disc 2 features medley mixes and remixes that are just plain fun in their celebration of Grease. There is the 3 song medley of “Grease Megamix”, which is a jazzed-up version of “You’re The One That I Want”, “Greased Lightnin’”, and “Summer Nights”. This is quite an enjoyable 5 minutes of recognizeable tunes played differently. In the middle song on this mix, sandwiched between verses of “Greased Lightnin’” are verses of “You’re The One That I Want”.
You’ll also find a “Grease Dream Mix” that was released as a single in the UK in 1998 during the movie’s resurgent popularity stemming from its re-release. It’s a more traditional mix of the movie’s original songs with a nicely engineered merge of several of the movie’s key songs.
Two Martian Remixes, also UK single issues, complete the 2nd disc. The first is the percussion thick “Summer Nights” as well as the final song, “You’re The One That I Want”. The first Martian remix works well while the second is an awkward song. It’s awkward because the song verses other than the chorus don’t lend well to the applied alternate style applications.
However, the entire package is a great addition to Grease fans that find the soundtrack to be timeless and who enjoy the extras that allow for interaction as well as alternate variations of songs that they have grown to love. With a nicely designed booklet that incorporates all the lyrics including the covers (you usually don’t find these reprinted) as well as photos and ample credits from both the movie and the soundtrack, this 25th Anniversary 2CD Deluxe Edition is the one that you want. Oo oo oo.
Chang chang Changitty chang shoobop. That’s the way it should be. Wha oooh yeah.
