Madeleine Peyroux
careless love

From the inevitable comparisons to the likes of 30's blues singer, Billie Holliday and others of their respective periods, Madeleine Peyroux (pronounced Peru) delivers an album of ‘throw-back’ style that will have some listeners pining for the classics, perhaps digging out the greats from their collections.  More importantly, Peyroux offers a refreshing new collection, with a few covers, that shows that styles never need die, no matter how long in the past they held ascendancy.

With careless love, her first in nearly 8 years since the release of her much appreciated debut, Dreamland, Madeleine Peyroux steps back into the smokey limelight of beautifully delivered blues tunes sung in a genuine style, or better said, this gal has the goods!

The album starts with one of Leonard Cohen’s more engaging love songs, one that searches for an ideal pleadingly rather than the actuality it endures.  What makes this song so timeless and haunting is its simple plea for the crux of love.  Cohen’s delivery is quite a sad affair and makes the song more heartbreaking in its force.  Peyroux’s version is dynamic in its stylistically era-jazzed version of a past time.  Both are excellent in their presentation.

Peyroux’s style is consistent in the rest of album, which includes a cover of Hank Williams’ “Weary Blues”, a cover of WC Handy’s “Careless Love”, and a cover of the late Elliot Smith’s “Between the Bars” that expresses the same departure of life that Smith revealed.  The gem of this blues vocal package is found in the last song, the lullaby-like “This is Heaven To Me”.  This softly delivered tune carries the moment in its sound, a minimalistic four-note repetition that is buoyed by “melt-in-your-heart” vocals that lightly brings to mind Doris Day and an ethereal trumpet that closes out the song and the album.

If you’re a lover of Billie Holliday blues, you’ll not be disappointed by any of the 12 songs found on this 2nd album by an artist who wants nothing but the best for her fans.  Careless Love comes highly recommended especially for those who find Norah Jones a refreshing talent in this day and age.
