Patton Oswalt is a very funny guy... when he isn’t going for the straight blue humor. Fortunately, there is more on his debut comedy disc “Feelin’ Kinda Patton” in the former camp than in the latter. His ruminations on the apocalypse, Paas egg coloring kits, the origins of little persons and the gauntlet known as the big steak are genuinely funny to the point where only Eddie Izzard could beat him. When he starts talking about d***, s***, b***j***, and chapped, battered p******, then the listener often sits on that uncomfortable edge between genuine laughter and nervous, uncomfortable laughter.
On the technical side, the track breaks could have been handled with a better ear. The tracks sometimes audibly “announce”, meaning that you can hear, in the ambient noise on the pieces, the tracks advancing. If you’re playing the disc at a comfortable volume, you can hear it pretty clearly. Look, this is the assertions of a rather anal-retentive listener and you, as casual listener, might say “You’re nuts, Dunphy. I don’t hear anything.” Still, if I didn’t say it, you might and then think I was slacking off.
Now, if you are an aficionado of comedy albums and are not easily shocked, this might be your next favorite collection. For those who have a blushing affliction, this one may turn you pinker than a baboon’s backside. This is warning time.
