There is a certain actress that many of you know for her film roles, particularly a popular series known as Resident Evil. What you may not know is that this actress released an album in 1994. Yeah, yeah…we all know that actors and actresses just have to be rock stars now (remember when it was the other way around?) and their output is usually quite underwhelming. But in Milla’s case, we have the opposite effect.
The Divine Comedy reveals a folk-style in a beatnik atmosphere with philosophic underpinnings heady stuff for a teenager. Milla’s then label, SBK, promoted this album with free CD singles of her small hit, “Gentleman Who Fell”, of which I was a recipient. After slipping it into the CD player found on the store premises and thoroughly enjoying the cut, I purchased the album.
Filled with 11 songs of varying depth, The Divine Comedy is a surprisingly strong first release for a girl who has yet to follow it up with something as well done as this release was. It begins with “The Alien Song (for those who listen)”, an intelligently crafted and sung tune that incorporates light percussion and airy bamboo flute as the musical carrier. Milla employs a beautiful vocal range and ability to infuse her words with import making a “did you hear this one?” song.
The hauntingly expressive “Gentleman Who Fell”, with Milla Jovovich’s talented vocal delivery, follows “The Alien Song.” As the album progresses the songs get better. “It’s Your Life,” “Reaching From Nowhere,” and “Bang Your Head” employ various musical accompaniments that enhance the album as a whole while providing each song with personality, creating an album of diverse acoustical gems.
The Divine Comedy is an album of music that works in today’s musical climate just as well as it did back a decade ago. MusicTAP highly recommends that you search out this album if you enjoy female folk vocal with a toe in the late 60s/early 70s. Milla has gifted the world with a strong debut while providing us with her visual talents in movies like Dazed and Confused, The Fifth Element, Resident Evil 1 and 2, and others. But now it’s time to give the world her next wide release. She’s too talented musically to ignore that market. not bad for a 16 year old.
