Lee Michaels
Hello: The Very Best of Lee Michaels

This late 60s/early 70s solo artist created soulful and bluesy tunes that ran the course of 6 albums for A&M Records.  While many of the songs are very good, none captured the public’s attention like his unforgettable Top 10 “Do You Know What I Mean.”

This collection, from the “necessary like air” label, Shout! Factory, begins with the familiar 60s psychedelic era sound in his title song, “Hello.”  “Hello” is a standout that is quickly followed by “Carnival of Life”, also from Michaels’ first album and also sporting psych sounds.  There are Vietnam war references (hey, it was the 60s..it’s what defined an era.)  As the collection advances, the album brings you closer and closer to Michaels’ highly recognizeable style utilized in “Do You Know What I Mean.”

14 songs from 6 albums, this collection spreads the right amount of tunes from those albums.  Even if you only remember his “Do You Know What I Mean”, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear what Michaels recorded that you DIDN’T hear.
