Joe Jackson Band
Afterlife: Live

I suppose I have a long list of musical heroes, but one that stands out farther than most is Joe Jackson. Most recognized as part of the late 70s new wave / punk-pop scene, Jackson quickly made it known he was capable of just about anything. His backing band could blaze a snotty trail and skank like rude boys and also lay down a sophisticated melody just as sweet as you please. After a couple of releases with this core group Jackson when on to explore other avenues of music, proving at every turn just how versatile he is.

It was with great fanfare that the original Joe Jackson Band got together and made “Volume Four”. The resulting tour was a thrill for the fans, and the excitement is heard on the document “Afterlife”. Some of the best tunes are revisited here; Look Sharp!, Fools In Love, Got The Time and Jackson’s signature, toned-down version of pop-smash Steppin’ Out. Also some new additions enter the fold like the gorgeous ballad Love At First Light and Awkward Age.

My big problem with “Afterlife” is that it is meant to sound raw, and does occasionally to distraction. I think it is more because I am so used to the studio versions that the treble-heavy sound at the recorded venues set me back. Nonetheless, all performers here rock, rage and woo in equal portions. Listening to the Joe Jackson Band is like hearing the energy of upstarts merged with the knowledge and skill of veterans.  May the new pop-punkers learn how to diversify with even half as much grace.
