Gods and Generals captures you from the very beginning with the entrancing "Going Home". Performed by Sony Classical artist Mary Fahl, the song becomes a timeless journey into the past that is distinctly America. With haunting clarity, "Going Home" becomes a backdrop to a film that is, in its portrayal, a study into the hearts of men. The tragedies of loss that encapsulate the spirit of the film is supremely replicated on every track in this 2 disc set.

With an emotion wrenching score by John Frizzell and Randy Edelman, who also collaborated on "Gettysburg", of which this film is a prequel, and the richly detailed instrumentation of Mark O'Connor (violin), and Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains (tin whistle, uilleann pipes), this set becomes a deeply satisfying and poignant collection of period music and contemporary styling.

Bob Dylan contributes an entrancing 8 minute song that is as pure as it is emotive. "'Cross The Green Mountain", showcases the Guthrie in Dylan; the music as striking as it's lyrics and as timelessly memorable as Dylan's delivery of the song.

The disc is divided into structured delivery. It starts off with an original composition (Fahl) and ends with an original composition (Dylan). In between, there are uniquely performed pieces that recall the evocative beauty of the score for "Braveheart". With the authenticity of instruments that provide the lingering elements to the lushness of the piano pieces, "Gods and Generals", scores high marks as a very listenable experience. As with "Braveheart", the set provides replayability and stands alone, musically, from the trappings of the film's visuals. As such, this CD becomes one that will deliver hours of beautiful music with bonuses of a strong Dylan original and a gorgeous Mary Fahl composition.

This disc also includes a bonus DVD that's filled with movie extras normally found on DVD video releases. The disc includes a movie trailer, two videos featuring the two original songs, one by Dylan and one by Fahl, and - get this - six deleted scenes that feature songs.

With a detailed, 10 page folded insert that contains photos from the film, credits, lyrics to "Going Home", and notes on the historical aspects of the film's music, the value of this disc is underscored. It will make a great addition to your soundtrack library.

The movie opens in February 2003.
