08/20/2003 8:20p PT Scott Watkins - Reviewer Guess who’s back? Back again. Emo’s back, tell a friend. Undoubtedly, Dashboard Confessional pushed the redheaded stepchild of the music industry, Emo, into the mainstream. At the same time, pussifying an entire genre. Adding to the woes of Emo fans everywhere, Jennifer Love Hewitt went on MTV and proclaimed that her album Bare Naked, was in fact Emo. Its no wonder bands ultimately shun the Emo stigma, opting instead to proclaim, “We don’t like to put a specific label on ourselves.” As a fan of said music genre, I was left wondering what to do in-between releases from Saves The Day. GLASSEATER, hailing from Miami, has become my savior. Their album, Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down from Victory Records, due to hit stores August 26 (2003), is an eclectic mix of Emo, punk rock, and hardcore. More aptly dubbed Screamo (Emotional Hardcore), GLASSEATER effectively combines heartfelt meaningful lyrics with a twist of aggression and a hint of whimsical pop punk. In the track "Shortcut For a Quick Getaway", lyrics as meaningful as “I’ve had to feel what it is like to be at war with myself / to be at war with your love / to be at war without your love,” are layered on top of melodic guitar riffs and a heart-pounding drumbeat. Add to that the hardcore undertones, and you have yourselves a winner. Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down is ten tracks of everything that is good about the genre. Bottom Line: Tickle me Emo. This record is a must have for fans of Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday, or punk bands like Face To Face. Copyright © 2002-2003 Matthew Rowe. All rights reserved. |
