It’s the “new brutality”; thundering thrash and scorched earth shrieks and growls that, just as disturbingly, give way to freak-jazz asides, clean vocals, melodies more suited to singing than shredding... and then it is once more into the breach.
Jersey
’s own Dillinger Escape Plan finds good company with other slightly terrifying practitioners of split-personality eclecticism, Fantomas, Strapping Young Lad and The Melvins.
At every turn though, the band is in complete control. Notice the sudden shifts in “Sunshine The Werewolf” or the complete schizoid about-face on “Unretrofied”, a tune that would put any MTV Buzz Bin act to shame, never quite hinting how “heavy” the rest of the disc is. There’s no doubt that the band has serious talent to back up their wall of fury.
If there’s an overarching problem, it is that the thrash dominates all else and that a song as relatively sedate as “Unretrofied” might deceive a casual listener who happens upon it. This disc is recommended, but for those who favor extreme rock that, by turns, goes to several other extremes. It’s a ploy; so don’t get caught without your protection.
