Atreyu - Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses Reviewed by Duane Leyva on July 10, 2002 "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" has a raw and unique style that explores a darker, more morbid fusion but redefines itself with melodic overtones that showcase Atreyu’s musical attributes and skills. Lead vocalist and song writer Alex Varkatzas' cryptic voice along with drummer Brandon Saller 's harmonious voice together develop a menacing ambiance with "a song for the optimist" clearly illustrating that. "ain’t love grand" has a dynamic musical range that builds to a good crescendo while "deanne the arsonist" is one of the most angriest but well controlled songs that I have ever listened to, providing very nice rips on the guitars. "tulips are better" have a serious thunderous rhythm section. "a vampire's lament" would make all of the undead happy; thumbs up for Atreyu on this song. They're really in the pocket on this one. I have never been a fan of Rock videos but "a vampire's lament" would be interesting to view. "lip gloss and black" is a neck breaker with a touch of esteemed class with its ending on the piano. All in all, "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" by Atreyu is a very good album. The only criticism that they may receive would be that some of the songs on this album are kind of repetitive but I still gave it four out of five stars. On that final note, I’m very pleased that something new is coming out of Orange County, CA where Atreyu is from. Keep up the good work.
