It doesn’t take much listening to recognize the ‘cool factor’ of Sax for Stax, an album of covers and a few originals made in the spirit of the sounds found on this recording. With a time-sweet sax performed by Gerald Albright, the 11 tracks of this album sound genuine and rich.
On this album, Albright covers such classics like The Staples’ “Respect Yourself,” mustered with plenty of R&B and Gospel flavouring (including sung choruses), and a sensuous, flirty version of Clifton Davis’ “Never Can Say Goodbye” (notably sung by Isaac Hayes; The Jackson Five; Gloria Gaynore; and others). “I Stand Accused,” a tune written by Soul-men, Jerry Butler and William Butler, is reverently and beautifully performed.
Albright’s originals sits alongside these classic tunes well. “Memphis Passion” is a soft jazz ode to the love and awe of a city, while “W.C. Handy Hop” brings out the R&B for a dance.
This is perfect summer evening listening for just about every circumstance. |
