It's very difficult to reprise the original Argus as it stands magnificently alone. It is a masterpiece that defines the band and is clearly the work that the band is best remembered for. Thankfully, the album has been remastered on several occasions and has been celebrated by an Anniversary Edition. (It sure would be nice to have reissued LPs of this title.)
Martin Turner, the original bassist for the band has formed his own version of Wishbone Ash and has elected to revisit Argus in a re-recorded set. And it isn't a bad set at all. In fact, there's much about it to throughly enjoy.
The reality of it is that this album is certainly not Argus. There's too many differences musically to get a picture-perfect rendition. But the soul of the original album is in place and that is what makes this curio an interesting acquirable piece to add to your library. Turner has guest appearances by John Wetton and Geoff Downes on this recording ("Throw Down The Sword").
Martin Turner makes every effort to vocally recapture the spirit of Argus and succeeds on many levels. If you're a Wishbone Ash fan, then this well-rehearsed effort is worth your time and money.
Normally, I'm not impressed with re-recorded works. Oftentimes, they're so far off the mark to make it a no-brainer to not purchase. But Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash has absorbed the material well and has re-delivered it in a heartfelt way so as to make Argus: Through the Looking Glass a wonderful addendum to an already excellent album.
