One of the sadly ignored albums from lists last year that should have been well-received was Never Cry Another Tear by Bad Lieutenant. Formed by New Order's Bernard Sumner, and filled out by guitarist Phil Cunningham, and guitarist/vocalist, Jake Evans, this trio produced an album that held solidly crafted tracks that are deeply rooted in the spirit of a familiar '80s style.
This album works on many levels. Bad Lieutenant is built around the quality voice of New Order's Bernard Sumner. The songs are airy with plenty of guitar to undergird the strong, pleasant melodies that make up the album. Never Cry Another Tear was never intended to be a disguised New Order album nor is Bad Lieutenant designed to be a New Order replacement. But then, neither does Sumner forsake his background with New Order.
What comes from this album is a solid and enjoyable selection of tunes that, while not compelling as the original (and dance-oriented) New Order, appeals to our love of '80s music. The first track, "Sink or Swim" is reminescent of an R.E.M. tune, as is "This is Home." But that doesn't permeate the overall sound of the band or this album. There's plenty of excellent tracks to enjoy like "Summer Days."
I'm embarrassed that this review took as long as it had to get to your attention. I've been aware of the album for some time. With no excuse other than it's better late than never, I hope that you'll take the time to investigate the enjoyable album that is Never Cry Another Tear.
