My first brush with Projekt Records came with an acquired copy of Beneath the Icy Floe (v4),a digipak sampler that contained
a varied collection of songs from it's then current roster of bands and artists. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the
music that was sampled on that collection, which included two Black Tape for a Blue Girl tracks ("The Scar of a Poet," "Fin De Siecle")  as well as a fantasticThanatos (a greatly mourned band that no longer records) song ("Von Stauffenberg"). That sampler also featured music by the atmospheric Lycia (another retired -and missed- band),the lush sounds of Love Spirals Downward, and the ambient worlds of Steve Roach and Vidna Obmana ("The Gathering").

Projekt Records, a fiercely independent label that has been associated with the diverse Gothic genre, actually is home
to music that extends far beyond the Gothic borders. Their recently released 12-track sampler, Under the Weight of Light,
features a broad expanse of music that includes "Sailor Boy," a cabaret track influenced by the emerging cabaret scene, by
Black Tape for a Blue Girl, the Country flavoured"Sugar in my Coffin" from Curtis Eller, the excellent Rock tune, "Ever Shy,"
by The Venture Bros co-writer, Doc Hammer in his band, Weep.

There are a few other goodies included. There is a new track from the darkwave band, Marakas Pen, which is made up from
members of Tearwave ("Currents"). There is also a previously unreleased 2010 version of  Black Tape for a Blue Girl's  "Halo Star," a song originally found on the album of the same name (released before their cabaret-infused 10 Neurotics). The five unreleased tracks make this $6.98 compilation worth acquiring all by itself, just for it's collector value for fans.

Samplers are excellent value for interested people, that supply a sneak peek into new music, bands, or even a label's offerings.  This sampler provides on all accounts. If you're adventurous, I'm betting that, like me, you'll be surprised at the music you'll come into contact with by way of this sampler.

(You can acquire this sampler at http://www.projekt.com for $2.98 or FREE by a placed $40 order).
