If Abba had begun their recording career in this time, Honeysuckle Weeks from The Submarines might be their album. But there is also an air of ‘60s pop in there as well. All of this makes the latest album from the recording duo known as The Submarines, a fun listen in many ways.
All of the songs here have a sweet charm to them. They are radio pop, with love and positive spins on life their main themes. The opener track, “submarine symphonika,” has an Abba appeal right from the get-go. It’s followed by the ‘love always wins’ themed “the thorny thicket,’ which will have you remembering not only those radio pop tunes of yesteryear but also give you a warm feeling that despite what songs will tell you these days, life is a nice thing to live if it works according to its plan.
And let’s face it, that is just what many of those classic ‘60s Top40 gems used to tell us. It’s fun to be alive and to be happy. Ok, it might be a little bit Abba, and a little bit Partridge Family, but that’s our past. Enjoy a little bit of it again with Honeysuckle Weeks from the refreshing The Submarines. Besides, we can all use a bit of this pleasantness.
“…but it’s a glorious day when morning comes
without the feeling of alarm, so rise & shine.
Now’s the time to be alive, to stay
awake with me a while and smile…”
