Jenny Lewis’ solo debut, Rabbit Fur Coat, is one of the great records of recent years. It’s an achingly gorgeous record, tailor-made for those late-night hours. Acid Tongue builds upon the sound of her debut, but goes for a more rootsy, organic feel, adding a more textures to the songs. Firmly rooted in the indie-country-rock vein, the album sees a more confident Lewis on sprawling tracks like “The Next Messiah” and “Jack Killed Mom.”
Her songwriting has grown evolved too. Ttracks like “See Fernando” and “Carpetbaggers” (a duet with Elvis Costello) are energetic and fun; “The Next Messiah” is a brilliant, sprawling eight-minute epic. The album has beautiful, quieter moments like the album's closer track, “Sing a Song for Them,” “Godspeed” and the stunning title track.
