On the Miles Davis-influenced new album by Christian Scott, we get a dose of melancholic Jazz with a nightclub feel. You sit through a wondrous set inside a club, drinking a few of anything, and then, after the end of the show, you step out into the night of the big city, awash in all of its charms and hardships, and make your way to the place you call home. But the music that you listened to stayed with you all the way, perhaps longer. That’s the seed of the brilliant Live album called Live at Newport.
The album contains two discs. The first is a CD of eight tracks that does not have a bad tune on it…at all. Recorded on August 9 of 2008 at the JVC Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, RI, this Live set offers five new songs not heard on his previous two album releases (Anthem – 2007, Rewind That – 2006). The second disc is a DVD of that set and also includes a documentary, “The Newport Experience.”
Christian Scott is only 24 years old but he has ages in his trumpet with what he can make it produce. It’s a rare talent to be able to send out notes that creep into your soul and resonate within. But Christian Scott channels greatness. Had he lived in the same era as the great ‘50s/’60s trumpeters, he’d be a name that inspires more than just excitement; he’d inspire awe.
Do yourself a favour. Put the album on, sit back, close your eyes and listen deeply. You’ll have an out of body experience.
