It's hard to find good, old-fashioned Soul songs like they performed back in the '60s and '70s.  It seems that today's Soul music has lost the art of the inner-self, relying more on personal accomplishment than the magic from within.  Fortunately for us hangers-on to the old school of Soul, we still have artists like FEMI, whose 6-track EP, Sweet Water Soul, reminds of Roberta Flack in her vocals.  The music of Sweet Water Soul is a mix of Jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and the Soul that we all love.

Although there are only six songs on this EP, it stands pretty tall.  Each song is not only a poetic piece that either expresses awe, love, and thanks but are also well-produced Soul fusion pieces that incorporate the beauty of many styles of music.  FEMI even takes a page from the '70s Soul look by her photography found in the fold out booklet, which also includes lyrics to each song.

If '70s Soul is your style of music, then do NOT ignore this EP album.  There are few in this day and age that can match FEMI in her music and I mean that wholeheartedly.  That doesn't mean that today's Soul artists are any less talented.  But it does mean that they can learn from the depth and richness of FEMI and her six songs.  Sweet Water Soul EP is a wonderful release, and you know how stingy I am with stars over four but this one deserves its 4 and a half stars.

Here's to an anxious wait for her full-length album, which we'll jump on immediately when it is released.
