Three Dog Night was an essential part of the TOP40 radioscape in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. You couldn’t tune in without hearing one of their songs. And those songs came in a steady march. Comprised of three main vocalists in Chuck Negron, Danny Hutton, and Cory Wells and augmented with four additional musicians to carry the musical load, Three Dog Night had the airwaves buzzing and turntables spinning.
They released a live album called Captured Live at The Forum in 1969 that did well but is now considered a technically flawed live recording. This new live release covers several important grounds. The first is that it is culled from live shows in 1972 and 1973 when most of their hits have already been recorded (although there are several more great ones to come – “The Show Must Go On,” and “Brickyard Blues” to name a few). 1972 and 1973 is a peak period for the band having recorded so many well-known, soon to become classics tunes making their shows a consistent Greatest Hits set. This is the second of the two important grounds for the band…their ability at this point to perform a set of hits without reaching too deeply for deep album tracks.
Eight of this album’s 12 performance tracks are from shows in Germany, while the remaining four tracks are from shows in England. Every one of the songs are familiar classics with the tracks cleaned via ProTools. This live album, Greatest Hits Live, is also produced by one of the vocal mainstays of the original band, Chuck Negron.
The included booklet contains 12 pages of photos, credits, and liner notes by Barry Alphonso.
You’ll find Greatest Hits Live to be a fun and satisfying experience. If you loved the band or just enjoyed hearing their hits, then this album is perfect. And it is a good inclusion for us nostalgia freaks. I listened to it ten times on the first day.
