Duane's Pit Stop

Write at dkleyva@musictap.net

Hello and welcome back to another week in Punk. This week, I need to answer a couple of questions thrown my way by you, the readers.

John Armes from Long Beach, CA asks if was that me on the side of the stage at the Judas Priest show in Long Beach?

“Yes Sir-ree bub”!! That was I partaking in all of the festivities occurring back stage. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take any pictures nor interview any of the bands that were on the bill, but I can tell the rest of the readers a quick low-down on how the show had gone. Anthrax was good but they did sound somewhat different having their original lead singer back as where I would of thought they should have been immensely better. Rob Zombie rocked but if any one has seen any of his previous headlining shows he is by no means a warm up band. And you had the general consensus that they were holding back a bit. But as for Judas Priest is concerned, damn they brought back some serious memories of way back in the day. Rob Halford still is the Metal God of lead singers and it was a sight to see his Harley rolling out on "Hell bent for leather". Damn good Metal show and the old guys threw a Metal Clinic.

Sammy T from Arizona asked what’s goods stuff in Punk as of late. Well Sammy T, I would suggest to check out the whole Dischord Records catalog. All of those bands that are signed with that label are the real deal.

What Dischord is doing is somewhat reminiscent of what SST Records did in the 80’s and 90’s. Check them right here.

With that in tow, lets get to the news. Have a killer week and goooooo #20 in NASCAR (he’s actually a huge Fugazi fan).

Taking Back Sunday - Home Movies - Taking Back Sunday are currently in the studio and have filmed the fun along the way. Check out the first “Webisode” from their “Home Movies” collection by clicking below. More exclusive video footage will be available over the next few weeks.

Days Like These E-Card Posted - Lobster Records artists Days Like These have posted an e-card for their November 1st release, Inventure. The release follows their 2004 release, Charity Burns Green. The card includes five tracks from the album.

The band is currently on tour with Just Surrender and Paint by Numbers.
You can view the E-card here.

From Ashes Rise Break Up - From Ashes Rise has called it a day.. (1996-2005) The band had this to say: " It was a great ride for many years but all things pass [and] so do punk bands. So to all of you, know that the money you spent, the time and effort on this band was the drive and will for us to continue for many years and for that we give thanks.

From Ashes Rise played all over and met some of the worlds best people and did some crazy ass shit along the way. You never realize that when you're doing it that it will ever end. But, we all wanted a change and are still doing bands and playing punk rock.[...] As long as people listen to our records keep memories and want or were part of our long walk on a short pier then so be it. So now go start your own band!"

From Ashes Rise released a number of records, with their last, Nightmares issued via Jade Tree in 2003.

Bad Religion Album In The Works - Bad Religion have planned to record a new album sometime before 2005 ends -- it is widely expected to be released in 2006, front man Greg Graffin said recently. The record is the follow-up to last year's "The Empire Strikes First". However, the group has not said an official word about the new album as of yet.

Greg Graffin and guitarist Brett Gurewitz have written about 20 songs or more while touring behind with their previous album "The Empire Strikes First". (Ultimate Guitar - Thebrpage.net)

Strange New Koufax Video - Click below and witness the fully nude, anotimically incorrect, fat, old lady holding half a dead fish. That's just part of it. Doghouse Records says this video for "Isabelle" is new but during my extensive research into this matter I came up with a question.

On the Koufax myspace page, they ask fans to vote for the "Isabelle" video at MTV Europe, but that post is from a few weeks ago. Granted, a few weeks does not make something "old" per se, but in this fast paced world of techno-information, the news might as well be that a war started in Iraq, or George Bush has been re-elected. So is it the same video? I couldn't tell you, I don't live in Europe. I suppose I could go look it up on the MTV Europe site, but I'm scared I won't understand the language... and I'm busy eating lunch. So who cares if it's the same video or not, if the Doghouse website says it's new, then that's my story to and I'm sticking to it. Either way, it's a cool video.

Koufax is currently on tour supporting their latest album "Hard Times are in Fashion."

Black Dahlia Murder Lose Drummer/Bassist - Zach Gibson and Dave Lock, the drummer and Bassist of metalcore band The Black Dahlia Murderhave been asked to leave the band.

According to the band's myspace site:

yup zach and dave are gone.

both are gone cause they couldn't actually play our material. it was sad to have to make such a decision with dave since he's been with us for quite some time, we wish him nothing but the best in all his future endeavors. zach, however, was a much easier call to make. he simply didin't care that he played sub-par and we decided that we could definitely not let someone who doesn't even care about the band to continue. we're sorry to all of you who are bummed, but we promise a much better black dahlia murder to come.

You can read a statement from Zach here.

There is no word whether the band has found replacements to fill in for their Canadian tour dates with The End and A Life Once Lost.

The band recently released an exclusive acoustic track titled “Welcome to 1984” in support of a political organization called The World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime.

That organization recently saw one of it's advertising spots banned by New York's HOT 97 radio station due to it's content. The banned ad which features a collaboration of artists Boots Riley from the Coup and Miles Solay from Outernational can be found here.

Myspace officially launches label - Popular social site Myspace officially launched their record label today. While plans for the label have been in the works for some time, more details have surfaced on the organization.

The label will be marketed, manufactured and distributed by Universal Music Group's Interscope sublabel and will debut with the previously announced Myspace Records Volume 1 compilation. That disc is due out November 15th and includes contributions from Against Me!, AFI, The All-American Rejects, Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, Say Anything, Weezer and more.

The label began by signing the popular rap/rock act Hollywood Undead and MySpace president Tom Anderson says he is " talking to about four bands right now."

The deal is interesting, particularly in light of the number of unsigned and independent artists as well as labels who currently use the site for promotion hoping to reach some of the 35 million members of the site.

Myspace and it's parent, Intermix Media are owned by Newscorp, the umbrella company of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

You can click Read More for a look at the artwork and track listing for the compilation.

Fall Out Boy continues to support Under the Cork Tree and is in the midst of a headling run on the sold out Nintendo Fusion Tour. They are joined on the tour by The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack, Boys Night Out and Panic! At the Disco.

After the Fusion tour wraps up, the band has promised three "secret" shows in the US. The band also plans to follow their January trip to Europe by touring the US in the Spring with Hawthorne Heights.

Days Like These e-card posted - Days Like These have posted an e-card for Iventure. The album was released on November 1st and follows their 2004 release, Charity Burns Green.

Statements from Nick Ghanbarian and Anthony Raneri of Bayside - Some more information has come in surrounding the tragic circumstances on Monday which saw a number of injuries and the death of Bayside drummer, John Holohan.

Bassist Nick Ghanbarian, who was also seriously injured made the following statement:

I'm laying here in the hospital, awaiting my surgery tomorrow. To clear up any questions, I broke my back ( L4 vertebrae ). I'm very lucky to not be paralyzed. I was thrown through the window of our rolling van, after hitting a patch of ice. I have a full torso cast on, keeping my back straight. I just started eating again so now I can take some percoset which helps with my intense back pain. All in all, Ill be ok and the minute I can have a bass in my hand and be playing in front of people again I will. It's all I know how to do and the only thing that makes me happy.

Vocalist Anthony Raneri also shared a statement:

On Halloween I lost my best friend, big brother, mentor and band mate. This letter, this week and the rest of my life is not going to be a mourning of a lost life, but a celebration of a wonderful one.

On November 16th, Jack and I will be flying out to St Petersburg, FL to join up with the Never Sleep Again. We will be playing an acoustic set that night and every night through the end of the tour on December 11th. We loved this tour. Beatz loved this tour and this is something that we need to do for ourselves, for our band and for John Beatz, who would kick my ass if I didn't finish up what he gave his life for.

A memorial fund has been established in John's name, and donations can be made here.

A number of John's friends have also stepped up to provide some assistance, online retailer merchtable.biz has pledged to give half the price of each order to the fund.

You can click Read More for the entirety of Nick and Anthony's statements.

Sony DRM Doing More Than "Protecting" CDs? – According to an extensive blog post here, it appears that the DRM copy-protection software from Sony/Columbia Records CDs are in fact installing rootkits on user's computers. "Rootkits are cloaking technologies that hide files, Registry keys, and other system objects from diagnostic and security software, and they are usually employed by malware attempting to keep their implementation hidden." The linked post is bit on the technical side of things, but if you follow it through, it's quite stirring.
