Duane's Pit Stop

Write at dkleyva@musictap.net

Hello and welcome back to another Duane’s Pit Stop. I just want to say thank you to every one who has sent me an E-mail regarding the passing of my brother Eric. It’s very cool to know that MusicTAP readers care. Thank you!

Over the last two weeks, I healed by attending various live venues across town as well as in my very back yard. On 4/9, I had attended The Shrooms and The Thrusters gig at the Casa in Boyle Heights and damn that was good stuff. And to those kids who were Moshing, you all get a thousand Punk Points, sweet. Art and the rest of The Shrooms are quite good musicians and can really turn the heat up with those new Marshall Amps sitting behind Art. Good stuff Boys! Check out their site at www.theshrooms.com for more touring info and tell that Bastard Mr. Art that I sent you. I also caught up with Miss Mickey Champion at Blue Bongo Café in Downtown Los Angeles. Now I have seen some bands in my day but this Lady put on a phenomenal show. See her every Tuesday evening of this month at the Blue Bongo Café in downtown LA. I had also had run into the guys from Psycho Billy minus their Bass Player. What a throw back sound, almost like the Cramps, and two cheers to the Blue Bongo Café for bringing in some hot bands  in the Los Angeles area. Way to go Chris and Mark. And with that final note lets get to the news.

Denali breaks up - Jade Tree has posted the following news on Denali:

"After two records and countless hours on the road, Richmond Virginia 's DENALI have decided to move on. The band will not be playing their scheduled dates on the Plea for Peace tour and have headed home after finishing their recent tour with Brand New. While we are very sad to hear this, we do want to wish both Cam and Maura the best of luck in their future endeavors. Above all else DENALI was an incredible live band and after seeing them recently, with new members Stephen Howard and Ryan Rapsys, at both SXSW and Skate and Surf we will have fond memories of their electrifying stage show as well as the last few years working together."

Shadowboxer songs online - San Francisco 's Shadowboxer has two songs online. You can download (what I'm assuming are demos of) "You're Looking at the Heads" and "Price on Wilson " at their website. Two people were arrested at the scene and were later released on bail. MacGowan was taken to St Thomas ' Hospital, but did not stay for treatment.

The band completed the demo tracks for the new album recently, and promises that the new CD will undoubtedly be the best Travoltas album to date. It will please both old and new Travoltas fans alike, as well as convert countless ordinary music listeners into Travoltas maniacs. The High School Reunion will be The Netherlands based band’s 7th full-length release, not including several split CDs, live albums, and b-side compilation releases, since their inception 14 years ago. Fat Mike over from Punkbands.com has a great recap of the Rock Against Bush Tour Fat Mike is here with a recap of the Rock Against Bush Tour which just wrapped up a couple days ago. Here's a list of stuff he came up with: Things that sucked on the first 3-week Rock Against Bush tour:

1. Threw my back out lifting a hat and had to play 2 shows lying on a couch.
2. Arizona State University cancelled the last show because they heard that there were artists speaking against Bush. It was supposed to be a free outdoor show for 10,000 people. We had to move it to a small theatre and charge 25 bucks to pay for the giant PA we rented for the big outdoor show. Apparently ASU doesn't like political debate.
3. Skinheads in Bakersfield threw large chunks of cement at us. One piece hit Eric Melvin and another went through my speaker.
4. After working with us for 13 years, Timmy the Turtle sang with us for the last time. He is now tour managing for Bad Religion. Oh and he cracked a rib on stage in Phoenix . We miss him.
5. Waking up at 7 AM to do interviews on morning radio shows.
6. Had nightmares after watching scary movies on Alkaline Trio`s bus

Things that ruled on the first 3-week Rock Against Bush tour:
1. Got to watch scary movies on Alkaline Trio`s bus.
2. I whored myself on commercial alternative radio, but got our message out to over 4 million listeners.
3. Matt Skiba and I wrote a song together.
4. The tour drew more than 50,000 people.
5. Playing "Too Drunk to Fuck" with Jello Biafra was neat.
6. Between Punkvoter and Music for America , we got over 10,000 kids to sign up, and around 2,000 new registered voters. Even a few dozen from Bakersfield .
7. CNN filmed the last show for Inside Politics.
8. Timmy the Turtle looked real funny when he slipped on stage in Pheonix. We all laughed.

Slow Coming Day  - will be heading out on tour this May with the Beautiful Mistake, Spitalfield, and the Reunion Show from May 10th-May 29th. Check the band's website at www.slowcomingday.com

Jade Tree V/A "Location Is Eeverythin Vol. 2" - The newest volume of the uber-popular Location is everything sampler is now available. Entitled appropriately enough as Location is Everything Vol.2 CD (JT1094), the record offers a true cross-section of what makes independent music so exciting, vibrant and crucial; the art-damaged ennui of JOAN OF ARC rubs elbows with the anthemic, space age power-pop of STATISTICS as easily as THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES sinister, scathing chops butt up against the spellbinding, glacial hooks of DENALI – a perfect overview to our diverse family tree.

The CD also features bonus tracks of unreleased, live, and demo versions of tracks by PEDRO THE LION, FROM ASHES RISE, ONELINEDRAWING, PAINT IT BLACK, CEX, and STATISTICS.

Track Listing

1. THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES “Riding the Grape Dragon”
2. CEX “Kill Me”

6. DENALI “Hold Your Breath”
7. FROM ASHES RISE “Reaction”
8. ONELINEDRAWING “We Had a Deal”
9. CHALLENGER “Input the Output”
10. ESTER DRANG “The Greatest Thing”
11. KID DYNAMITE “Heart a Tact”
12. FURY “Resurrection”
13. JOAN OF ARC “Dead Together”
14. MILEMARKER “The Banner to the Sick”

Millencolin On Three European Festivals And Rehearsing - You might think it’s been awfully quiet around Millencolin lately. In the meantime you can see Millencolin on stage at the following festivals this spring/summer

Yo Punx. The Casualties - are going back this May to the old continent for a full European tour in support of there new album "On the front line". The tour is going through England , Germany , Belgium , Poland , Austria and Czeck Republic . So head on over there to check out the dates here.

SNFU Vocalist Chin Branches Out - Kenny Chin may be a slave master these days but he'll always be a pig at heart. The SNFU vocalist is fronting a new project called Slaveco but still wants to be known as Chi Pig, the punk moniker he has been using for more than 20 years. "That's my character -- that's who I am no matter what I'm doing," he says.

Slaveco came into being when Pig took a break from SNFU after a particularly grueling European tour
which almost destroyed the band. During his down time, he started jamming with three friends in Vancouver 's band Ocean3. The resulting sound of Slaveco is a little darker musically and thematically than the speedy skate-punk of SNFU, incorporating touches of metal, blues and jazz along with Pig's unmistakable vocals.

"I kind of equate it more to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds -- there are dark, sinister things lurking underneath," he says.

"It's got a little bit more swagger and it's fun to play live because people aren't expecting anything. When you play with SNFU they're expecting a certain quality. In Slaveco there's more variety. The guitar player (Jay Black) comes from a different school and plays differently than Marc (Belke of SNFU)."

Fans of SNFU needn't worry, though. The group is still together and features Pig and Belke, along with two Slaveco drummer Shane Smith and bassist Matt Warhurst.

They have played two shows with the new lineup and just finished a new album -- their first since 2000's Ping Pong EP -- which is die in summer. Pig is also working on solo material that has nothing to do with punk.

"I've been cultivating songs around the house on a computer, sampling drums and keyboards. It's new wavy and quirky," he says (chartattack.com)

Big D Song Online - A new Big D and the Kids Table song has been posted up on their PureVolume.com page. The song, entitled "Girls Against Drunk Bitches," will appear on their album How It Goes, out later this year. The band has also made a live video of this very same song available for download here.

The band is also out on the road from now until mid-May with the Ska Is Dead tour as well as the Suicide Machines/Against All Authority tour.

DEAD KENNEDYS MEMBER WINS BIG - PUNK LEGEND DH PELIGRO STARS IN ACTION MOVIE, WINS ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR AND IS VOTED BY ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE AS "ONE OF PUNK ROCK'S MOST INFLUENTIAL" Best known as one of the pioneers of American hardcore punk and recently winning Rock Album of the Year for his solo album Sum of Our Surroundings(Dirrty Records), D.H. Peligro's pedigree runs deep. He's the original member/songwriter in the California punk quartet The Dead Kennedys, he's a former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nailbomb, and is the frontman of his own awarding winning band simply known as Peligro. This St. Louis native took a machete to the music world and carved a path so uniquely his own that he's influenced some of today's popular punksters like The Offspring, No Doubt and many others.

Peligro can soon add another title to his list of accomplishments-action movie star. The rocker has been tapped to play the lead in the action movie "The Four Horsemen." The film is described as having the intrigue of Clear and Present Danger (Harrison Ford), the gritty of Traffic (Michael Douglas), and the fast paced action of Lethal Weapon (Mel Gibson/Danny Glover).

"I'm performin my own stunts in this movie which means I have to stick to a strict workout regimen," says Peligro who along with the rest of the Dead Kennedys was voted one of punk rock's most influential. "It's tough, but unlike some of today's top action stars who depends mostly on stunt doubles to make them look good, I'm doing my own stunts in the movie to give people their monies worth."

When asked how it feels to have such a great musical impact on so many people all over the world Peligro responds, " It's mind blowing. While touring with the Dead Kennedys I would see kids and adults worldwide singing along to our songs and sporting their Dead Kennedys t-shirts. It shows how much love people have for us after all these years."

Bad Religion " Los Angeles Is Burning" On iTunes  - This comes from the latest issue of the Epitaph newsletter. It also looks like the single for "Los Angeles Is Burning" will be up and available for sale on the Apple iTunes store on May 4th! As soon as this is confirmed, we'll let you know!

New Long Since Forgotten Mp3 - Long Since Forgotten has a new, previously unreleased song and its exclusively at purevolume.com. It's called “Becoming The Streets”. The band will be on tour again in July/August with The Lyndsay Diaries and you can check out the tour dates at their website.

Dischord offers Fugazi Live Recordings on a burn-per-order basis. - Pitchfork Media has announced that Dischord Records will be making live Fugazi records available on a burn-per-order basis. The prices will reportedly be somewhere between $8 or $10 depending on whether 2 CDs are required. Pitchfork cites a statement from the label with more info: "These are very much the original recordings without any attempt to correct for things like volume changes, strange mixing effects, or the occasionally out-of-tune guitar… Though the sound quality on these tapes does vary, if a show was too poorly recorded it didn't make the cut." Dischord's website did not have any visibly announcements at press time.

What we suggest is as follows: Install a P2P tool of your choice and you'll be able to find Fugazi live recordings as well. This really is below the table - especially for a label most of you admire (including me).

Well that’s going to wrap up another edition for Duane’s Pit Stop. Hope every one has a great week. Take care.
