Oldies deliver goodies at Social Distortion show - Skull jewelry, studded belts, tattoos and heavy black eyeliner were trappings of the American counter-culture when Mike Ness first formed Social Distortion roughly 25 years ago.
Now that look is espoused in ads for the junior section at major department stores. That might be why some people say there really isn't such a thing as punk anymore; that even cultural innovators such as Social D are playing a watered-down version of the angst-driven sound they pioneered in the early 1980s.
But so what if
Ness
is older, kinder and softer around the middle than he was when the band's legendary tour documentary "Another State of Mind" showcased his self-destructive spiral into bad boy rebellion.
Friday night's capacity crowd at the Fillmore Auditorium still relished every honest tome in his matured, rootsy delivery.
This show was a like a family reunion, where the part of the favorite old uncle was played by beefy guys with greasy pompadours who hugged each other and raised their drinks during "Prison Bound," and the part of the mischievous middle school cousins were played by the swirl of teens and college kids fueling the mosh pit and crowd surfing in front of the stage.
Plastic cups full of beer sailed over the room when
Ness
launched perennial alt-rock favorites "Ring of Fire" and "Story of My Life." The band wove those classics into a set that included such new material as "Reach for the Sky," one of several introspective tracks on "Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll," Social D's latest album, and first studio release in eight years.
But it was perhaps The Rolling Stones cover "Under My Thumb" that best showcased the band's pulsating rhythms and country punk jangle, along with
Ness
's gruff, Johnny Cash- inspired vocals.
The Social D front man makes no apologies for the fact that his music, although still aggressive, now broaches fatherhood, faith and friendship instead of the anti-social agenda that once made this one of American punk's seminal acts. Neither do most of
Ness
' fans. The Denver crowd, sprinkled with people who'd traveled from out of state for the show, seemed split down the middle between diehard Social D devotees and newbie’s who discovered Ness and friends through corporate radio or MTV. Both groups were equally supportive, belting out lyrics and responding to
Ness
like the music legend that he is.
Even when the Fillmore lights came up earlier than usual for a Friday night concert and the band left the stage without performing an encore, this blissful sold-out crowd left looking as though they'd just witnessed something special.

The Misfits Legacy of Brutality - With the latest re-animation of horror punk legend the Misfits coming to haunt
Hartford
, a look back at three decades of hell.
By Adam Bulger -
November 11, 2004
The current Misfits lineup is like the Ringo Starr All-Starr Band of punk rock, with Marky Ramone on drums and Black Flag's Dez Cadenza on guitar. They're touring behind Project 1950, a collection of '50s-era covers. Bassist and sole remaining original member Jerry only sings lead vocals. Their shows spotlight each member of the trio, including Ramones and Black Flag chestnuts alongside thrashed-out covers of songs like "This Magic Moment" and rehashing of Misfits classics "Die, Die My Darling." The show operates on about three different levels of nostalgia, and is reportedly pretty good.
After three decades, the Misfits have arrived. Any event that's even vaguely punk rock has hosts of Misfit skulls. Their website offers a range of merchandise rivaled perhaps only by Kiss. Fans can buy Misfits pillowcases, dolls, clocks and scented candles. Their music has been featured on Monday Night Football and Pro Wrestling matches.
The Misfits' original output, recorded between '77 and '83, is shockingly great. The music is immediate, sugar-rush punk rock. Songs like "Astro Zombies," "20 Eyes" and "Skulls" have fierce instrumentation and melodies that people sing along to before they know the words.
The Misfits are sort of a genre unto themselves; horror punk. Using schlock horror movies, comic books, Ramones power chords, sing-along harmonies and darkly funny lyrics, they formed a careening pop culture jalopy. Rob Zombie should pay them royalties every time he steps out in public.
But unlike Zombie, Marilyn Manson -- or even the Elvis of Satan Rock himself, former 'fits front man Glenn Danzig -- the Misfits' darkness is visceral fun.
Danzig
's deep-throated crooning about murder and dismemberment is almost cute.
Their look matches the dark pop culture mix of their music. They have one of rock 'n' roll's great haircuts; the devil lock, a hair tendril spike that slithers over the nose. Their custom-built guitars look like weapons out of EC comics.
They come from
Lodi
, a
Jersey
town that my friends used to joke stood for "Lots of Dumb Italians." It was Guido Ground Zero full of IROC-Zs and big hair.
It's a seemingly unlikely breeding ground for one of punk rock's greatest bands. But remember that punk incubates best in an environment of alienation and hostility.
The Misfits' original five-year run was a grim, desperate rock epic. Jerry Only and Glenn Danzig met in March of '77 and formed the Misfits. Despite how Only, then a high school senior, had been playing bass for just over two months, the Misfits played their debut gig at CBGBs that April. They played scattered shows in
New York
and short, disaster-ridden tours of the rest of the
US
. Aside from Only and
Danzig
, they had a Spinal Tap-esque revolving cast of guitar players and drummers.
Their live shows were notorious for their violence, even in the context of '80s punk. They were banned from Max's
Kansas City
after a band member allegedly hit a fan with a glass. A riot occurred at a
San Francisco
show after an audience member threw several beer cans at their guitarist Doyle, who reportedly responded by breaking his guitar over the guy's head.
By '83 tensions within the band had reached the boiling point. During a disastrous Detroit Halloween concert,
Danzig
announced onstage that it would be the last Misfits show.
While Danzig rose from the Misfits' ashes to form gloom-rock band Samhain, (renamed
Danzig
when they signed with Rick Rubin's Def Jam record label) the rest of the Misfits dropped out of music altogether. The Caiafa brothers -- Misfits guitarist Doyle and bass player Jerry Only -- took over their family's precision knife factory, Proedge, which Jerry Only still operates and owns. Former drummer Robo was an early hire.
The Misfits were well-loved among their fans -- called the Fiend Club -- but were mostly unknown when they broke up in 1983. Their slow rise to national recognition began four years later. Metallica covered two of their songs, "Green Hell" and "Last Caress," on their 1987 album Garage Days Re-Revisited, causing an unexpected spike in the band's popularity.
The Misfit's posthumous success was met with legal squabbling among the band's former members. Only and
Danzig
had a long battle over who owned the intellectual property of the Misfits which they settled in 1994. Only and his brother Doyle reformed the Misfits, hiring a Michale Graves as lead singer. They released two albums, American Psycho and Famous Monsters, and played several tours before
Graves
left the band in 2001. The reaction to the reconstituted Misfits was mixed, with much of the criticism directed at
Graves
.
After the Misfits,
Graves
became one of the most visible figures in the Republican punk rock movement. As a columnist for conservativepunk.com, he wrote articles with titles like "Punk Rock Hates America?" A 2001 New York Times article called "A Bush Surprise: Fright-Wing Support," quoted him saying, "I think George Bush is a wonderful, competent leader." Recently, he announced on his personal website, Michalegraves.net that he enlisted in the Marines last August.
Doyle will join
Danzig
onstage at two upcoming West Coast concerts playing a 20-minute set of Misfits songs, sparking questions about a potential original Misfits reunion. For now, the only iteration of the Misfits is the only game in town for
Hartford
area Fiends. abulger@hartfordadvocate.com
