Duane's Pit Stop

Write at dkleyva@musictap.net

Hello and welcome back to another week in Duane’s Pit Stop. This week, we have a load of Punk News and of bands heading in your direction as well as some great new releases. And since this up and coming week-end is the Fourth, I felt what better way to break in the Summer but with a Cannon Bomb!

I’m off next week to blow my hard earned money in Sin City so I do wish everyone a safe and sane Fourth, be real. Also note that we will not be issuing Pit Stop next week.

With that in tow, here’s the news.

SONIC YOUTH - SONIC NURSE - Sonic Youth's nineteenth long player is now available worldwide and is entitled "Sonic Nurse". Describing the record, the band has asked listeners to imagine "Bare Trees" era Fleetwood Mac jamming with "Jealous Again" era Black Flag.

The track listing for the album is as follows:

Samples of every song on the album can be heard here.

The 2 x LP will be available through Revolver.

Both will soon be available on the new sonicyouth.com store.

All the videos are presented with uncompressed audio so if you blast this thing through the hi-fi you will be able to rock out heartily.

Summer Stereo - Long Island 's Crime in Stereo are getting ready to embark on their summer tour, which starts July 2. The band will be touring with friends Scraps and Heart Attacks and will endeavor throughout the country on various dates through the end of the month. Immediately following their return, the guys will get back on the road with Burning Bridges and The Reform for another two week excursion to the Midwest and south during the second week of August.
As if that isn't enough, CIS will then begin work on their new EP for Walk All Night Records, which will most likely see a summer release date. They've already written new material for the disc and the band is excited about the new stuff, which they call "Off the hook." Their full-length will also be repressed. Check out dates and extended news over at CrimeInStereo.com.

Equal Vision Hits The Streets -The Equal Vision Records street team is looking to add a few members to the force. The label, who boasts band such as Alexisonfire, Coheed & Cambria, Tim e In Malta, Fear Before The March of Flames, The Snake The Cross The Crown and more, wants some dedicated members to help hit the following western cities:

Phoenix, AZ
Fullerton, CA
San Francisco, CA
Las Vegas, NV
Ventura, CA
Sacramento, CA
Seattle, WA
Boise, ID
Portland, OR

The Clash Jumps On The Reissue Bandwagon - Epic Records will be releasing a 25th anniversary edition of The Clash's classic album London Calling. What's different about this edition? Well, aside from being a digipak, the "original album" will be released along with another CD called The Vanilla Tapes, which features demos for London Calling songs that just happened to be lying around in Mick Jones' storage building. Along with London Calling tunes, the demos will also include many songs that have never been heard before. And the coup de grace? It'll include a DVD featuring a 45 minute documentary by Clash Biographer Don Letts. Much of the track lists haven't been divulged by Epic, but you can expect a reissue worth buying on September 21st.

Green Day Go Opera - Recently Billie Joe Armstrong, the front man of mainstream pop punk's long time kings, Green Day, announced that the next GD album will be a rock opera about a Jesus-esque character. Here are some quotes from Armstrong that further explain the rather odd idea...

"The record has a story line throughout it that follows a character by the name of Jesus of Suburbia." He also added "It's [about] him coming of age and the growing pains that are involved in it and seeing if he makes the right choices or the wrong choices or whatever choices that come to him."

The album, entitled American Idiot, is set to come out some time in September.

The Snake The Cross The Crown - Brand New Track -  Equal Vision Records has a brand new track called 'Gates of Dis' from The Snake The Cross The Crown's debut full length, Mander Salis, which hits the stores August 24th. Here is the tracklist:
1. An Honest Misappropriation of Funds
2. Empires
3. Gates of Dis
4. A Gathering of Shades
5. On The Threshold of Eternity
6. The Sun Tells The Moon
7. A Brief Intermission
8. The Laughing Man
9. Echolalia
10. The Fields of Iust

Greg Macpherson Enters Studio – Hard-rocking' heart-throb Greg Mac is ready to get back at it with an arsenal of killer songs for his upcoming full-length tentatively titled "47 Minutes." We may have only heard some tracks performed live and some terrible boom-box tapes, but we're already certifying that this one is going to be a genuine rocker. Greg starts what will be a series of studio sessions in Toronto and Winnipeg this week, and recording and mixing is expected to wrap sometime in August. The record will be released either late this fall or early 2005.

Greg will also be appearing - shirtless and mud-covered - at both the Winnipeg and Regina Folk Festivals this summer. He'll be playing a series of workshops and solo concerts July 9th - July 11th at the Winnipeg Festival - the Regina schedule has yet to be confirmed (check http://reginafolkfestival.com for updates.

Free Warped Tour Sampler - Starting tomorrow and the rest of Warped Tour, if you stop by The Bled / and or Juliette And The Licks' tent you can grab a sampler with unreleased and live tracks from the bled, juliette and the licks, the fight, emanuel, poulain, salem and other fiddler, imprint and repossession records artists.

Green Day Push Back New Release – AbsolutePunk.net reports that "the release of Green Day's new album, American Idiot, has been pushed back one week to September 21st, 2004." Here's what KROQ said on the matter: "Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong said when writing their new album, the gloves were off and they just went for it. They wanted to push themselves to be maximum Green Day. They had a completed album a year and a half ago, but the master tapes were stolen, and now that they look back, they feel like the stolen material wasn’t up to maximum Green Day standards. They feel the hard thing now will be outdoing the new disc, American Idiot, which drops September 21st."

Hot Water Music Preps 'Next' - Bilboard reports: Rock outfit Hot Water Music will release its third Epitaph album, "The New What Next," on Sept. 21. The disc was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, Cave In), who also manned the boards for HWM's 2002 album "Caution," at his Washington, D.C., studio Salad Days.

"We purposely tried to make each song stand on its own," bassist Jason Black tells Billboard.com. "We kind of got stuck in a mid-tempo rock rut on 'Caution.' I mean, we're all proud of that record -- it's by no means an embarrassment, but we were looking for different tempos and feels. We even experimented with different tunings, which in the past -- if it had been brought to the table -- we would have thought, 'That's never going to work.'"

The 12-track "The New What Next" promises stylistic diversity. Tracks like "Keep It Together" and "End of the Line" are in the roaring-yet-melodic vein Hot Water Music fans have come to love, while "Ebb and Flow" and "All Hands Down" have rhythmic leanings.

"We did a lot more re-writing in the studio," Black explains. "There was no pre-production in Florida . So we'd be like, 'Okay, that chorus doesn't stand up to the rest of that song, so we have to write an entirely different chorus or lose the song.' It might seem like we put a lot more pressure on ourselves to come up with great stuff on the spot, but it all came together easily."

The album news comes just a week after guitarist Chuck Ragan severely injured his hand and underwent reconstructive surgery, forcing the band to prematurely drop off a series of dates on the Dashboard Confessional-fronted Honda Civic Tour. According to Black, "[Ragan] just sort of fell and put his hand through some glass. It's a bad break. We have the summer off so he should be fully rehabilitated by the time we head out on tour."

"It's definitely got the potential to be a really serious issue, but its really good timing for such a sucky thing," he continues. "In fact, when it happened we were only an hour from home, and we had played five of the seven nights we had planned. So we were like, screw it. We don't have our guitar player; it's only 20 minutes a night. See ya."

Hot Water Music's next round of live dates is slated to coincide with the new album's release. They will kick off Sept. 21 in Ft. Lauderdale , Fla. , and also visit Sunshine State destinations Orlando (Sept. 22), St. Petersburg (Sept. 23) and Gainesville (Sept. 25).

Leftover Crack Album Rejected by Chain Stores - In an obvious publicity stunt, the upcoming album by Leftover Crack, due out on August 31st on Alternative Tentacles Records, was rejected by three chain stores due to explicit content. Entitled F*ck World Trade, the new CD will not be available in Musicland, Best Buy and Circuit City . Some chain stores however, including Virgin Megastore, will carry the release.

The album cover for the CD is a photo collage depicting the World Trade Center as the second plane was about to hit the South Tower, with President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in various positions implying a cavalier attitude towards the tragedy. The artwork inside includes photos of bombings in Iraq, demonstrators protesting the war in Iraq, etc.

Leftover Crack's previous album "Mediocre Generica" (released coincidentally on 9/11/01) on Hellcat Records went through a change in title and artwork before release due to their perceived inflammatory nature relating to school shootings.
