MusicTAP's Scott Watkins recently had the pleasure of attending a live show featuring the Serial P.O.P. at The Knitting Factory in LA. The following article relates his thoughts on the band and their music and the added bonus of a few words with the band. Serial P.O.P crashed landed onto the London scene late last year with the highly acclaimed ‘Fuck You Jack We’re Fireproof EP.’A limited release of only 3,000 copies that in the words of the NME “Rocked like Everest and popped like Pepsi.” Following a series of UK dates that kept them in frequent demand around East London’s disposable party scene, U.S. label Good Science whisked them to L.A. to record their album, WHITE SEX MALE, which was released on May 6. At the ripe-old age of 15, Serial P.O.P vocalist, Geo Mcfall, joined Dominic Waxing Lyrical, which he describes as a medieval/punk/cabaret band fronted by a cross-dressing, Victorian entertainer singing in Chaucerian English. Meanwhile, his brother Tom moved to London from Edinburgh and concentrated on electronic music. Geo eventually joined his brother in London, and the duo began laying the foundation for what would become Serial P.O.P. On bass, they enlisted Dave Simandi, former drummer for Dominic Waxing Lyrical, and on drums they brought on Stuart Bastiman, who had played with Geo in Rancher. What’s Rancher? Well it’s just your average everyday country/hip-hop outfit. Currently on tour in the U.S. in support of WHITE SEX MALE, Serial P.O.P brings a blend of Blur, New Order, and Devo with a hint of arrogance that believe it or not, is kind of refreshing. What sets them apart from other bands with arrogance (Creed) is the Serial P.O.P lads are quick-witted, and downright funny. I absolutely loved them. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Geo and Stuart. Below is a record of what transpired. MusicTAP: The most obvious question that I have to ask is what P.O.P stands for. SP: Originally it stood for Pieces of Piss, meaning easy. Now it stands for different things, Pirates of Penzance is one option. We would rather leave it up to people’s imaginations. We were all into “artsy fartsy” types of projects when we decided on the name, but we’re not anymore; now we’re like fucking Madonna. MusicTAP: Why did you decide to move from Edinburgh to London? SP: Practicality really. We were accumulating a lot of debt. London is bigger and offers a bevy of available options. MusicTAP: How does the music scene in Los Angeles compare to London? SP: The music scene isn’t much different, but the people are. In London, while you’re on stage, the crowd just looks at you with a blank stare. After your gig, they don’t really want to have a conversation with you, which is fine because I don’t want to those fucking people anyway. The problem in London is that everybody is in a band. In Los Angeles people enjoy talking to us, you know? MusicTAP: Are you surprised at all by the success you are starting to achieve? SP: Did you say surprised? Oh god no. I’m surprised that it didn’t happen a year ago. I think we’re quite good. MusicTAP: There’s quite a bit of cynicism in you lyrics. Are you really that cynical? SP: Stuart and I are very cynical, that’s why we’re doing this interview right now, while Dave and Tom are inside having a drink. MusicTAP: Dave and Tom aren’t cynical? SP: No just Stuart and me. MusicTAP: What can we expect from Serial P.O.P in the future? SP: Well we’re dealing with this album right now, which is up its own ass in a really good way. We’ll be touring a lot this summer and socializing a bit. The bottom line is Serial P.O.P is a band that you need to experience. For more information and tour dates check out their Web site at www.serialpop.com. Serial P.O.P has one more show this summer in Los Angeles on Monday, June 30, at Spaceland. Come on out, buy them a beer, compliment Geo on his mustache, and enjoy the show. Copyright © 2002-2003 Matthew Rowe. All rights reserved. |
