While negotiating a world tour to enlighten the world to the band’s subtle brilliance, Toronto’s SEA OF GREEN, came to Los Angeles to promote its third album, "Chemical Vacation".
Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Travis Cardinal, bassist/vocalist Eric Kuthe, and drummer/vocalist Matt Dowd, SEA OF GREEN formed in 1999, but puts on a live show that suggests they have been playing together for many years.
I am little skeptical when it comes to trios, but each member of SEA OF GREEN has a quality to their playing abilities that makes them individually a force to be reckoned with. Specifically, Matt Dowd’s drumming is the best that I have seen live in a long time. The drummer in any band can either be a catalyst for success, or a sure sign of failure. Matt’s quick hands and precision drumming are certainly a work of art, and a pleasure to watch.
According to Eric Kuthe, "Chemical Vacation" is straight-ahead rock, and is about personal stories of emotion and real life. Their stage presence and chemistry as a group is testimony to their heart felt love of their craft. Even a momentary glitch in the middle of their set due to electrical difficulties, proved to be an opportunity for the crowd to gain an insight to the band, as Travis Cardinal took advantage of the short delay and revealed some personal accounts about the band.
Travis has the rock star quality that cannot be taught. A kind of laid-back attitude the ladies are sure to be drawn to, and a face that any mom would love.
The styles of each member seem to be completely different, which could be cause for some confusion, but in this case only complements their live show, as the love for their music breaks any boundaries set by specific genres. For example, Eric’s fascination with Elvis, which he will be happy to talk to you about, only adds to his performance style without taking away from the group’s overall appeal.
The best part about SEA OF GREEN’S performance was the obvious fact that they wanted to be there. From the angry, head-pounding rendition of “Out Of My Head” to the more positive upbeat lyrics of “Life” the band poured their heart and soul out on that stage.
From the first riff of the guitar, to the last crash of the symbol; SEA OF GREEN had the audience eating out of the palm of their hands. If you like your rock smooth and tight, then SEA OF GREEN will certainly please.
