It was right around my bedtime, Saturday, May 31st when the Lazerwolfs finally took to the stage. Okay, so it was only a little after midnight, but late for me nonetheless.

As I sat inconspicuously in the back of the Liquid Den in Huntington Beach Ca, thinking I stuck out like a sore thumb, I began to wonder—am I going to make it out of here alive? Obviously I did or you wouldn’t be reading this right now, but enough about me; who are the Lazerwolfs?

The Lazerwolfs are Missoula, Montana’s own heavy rock trio who have recently hit the road in support of their debut album Get Mad.

First the good news; The Lazerwolfs are true to their word and deliver a live sound eerily close to their record—only louder. The band certainly knows who their audience is and provides blue-collar rock songs from blue-collar guys. Giving credit where credit is due, I was impressed with the sound that was achieved by the trio. For a 3-piece, one guitar band, they were certainly able to achieve a very rich sound.

With the good comes the bad. Although I was impressed with the sound quality, I left unenthusiastic about the live show. You may be wondering what the problem was exactly. If they sounded good, what else matters? After seeing the Lazerwolfs once, I have no desire to see them again. They didn’t bring anything to the stage that grabbed my attention. With throngs of bands playing on any given Saturday night, what do you want for your $10 cover charge? I want a little bit of entertainment. I would have been just as entertained listening to Get Mad in my car. In essence, they show was just plain stagnant.

While the set was tight, it lacked enthusiasm. I feel as though I missed something at this show. The elements that make a good rock show, were nowhere to be found.

I want to leave you with one last thought. I did some research on the Lazerwolfs, and one quote from their Web site that caught my attention was: “Rock n’ Roll is at its best when it exists outside of the Mainstream.” I am a huge fan of Indie bands working their asses off to get their music out to a large audience. I know there are a lot of bands playing to just a handful of people, while less talented acts are selling out arenas. Having said that, I tend to think bands that claim they don’t want mainstream success are not only lying to themselves, but to every one of their fans. Are you telling me you would rather play for 5 people than 5,000? Please

I don’t want to get off on a tangent here, but maybe I am one of those “wannabe mainstream music journalists” that the Lazerwolfs talk about. The fact of the matter is there’s a reason why bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin enjoyed mainstream success—not only were they fun to listen to, they were fun to watch.

But don’t just take my word for it. See them for yourself.
