If it isn't dry gulch out there in musicland. Believe it or not, news of ANY releases are nil. And I guess that means that we're going to be dull through the weekend. Hopefully Monday will bring a wad of new stuff. I'm still trying to put together Lindsay's new column and Dw's missive but an HTML snafu is hurting me and my efforts. But I will prevail. The snafu that I speak of actually has showed up before in Duane's column where the text spills out past its borders. I'll conquer it, be sure.

I'm really sorry for the lack. We'll leave the stuff up from Tuesday and have a load of stuff for you on Monday regardless of whether release content is available...or not.

I also have a The Music review of their second album expected on October 19 that I'll post Monday or Tuesday. We also have George Bennett's Los Lobos DVD review coming on Monday.

We'll see you on Monday.

September 22, 2004

We were so worn on Monday that we neglected to send off an icon of music. Johnny Ramone, whose membership in one of the world's most influential punk outfits, The Ramones, succumbed to prostate cancer on September 15. No one will forget his familiar stance as he furiously sent guitar notes into the universe, legs spread rock-style and his whole soul immersed in the sphere of The Ramones and their fans. He joins fellow mates, Joey and DeeDee Ramone in the great Band of the Hereafter. Like his mates before him, we will miss Johnny greatly. Hey Ho...!

Well, it's official. The White Sox are now out of contention and will wrap the season in hopes of a better year next year. To quote Kurt Vonnegut...and so it goes. The Bears will take on Bill Hunt's beloved Vikings next Sunday and will, hopefully, beat the stuffin' out of them. But that's me. Bill?

We have a few pieces in the works for you including a new column by Lindsay Planer called As The Disc Spins. In As The Disc Spins, Lindsay will look at a few releases as well as discuss upcoming albums, some of them interesting news. Lindsay has worked in the industry of music for years and thus, his new column will be lights on. Stop in and read his first issue when it is available. In it, he reviews Hall & Oates re-issues as well as Waylon Jennings releases, Abba, and Toots and The Maytalls. Next issue, he'll review the Judas Priest Box, The Dexter Gordon Box, and Wattstax DVD.

We'll also have an impromptu column coming up by Dw Dunphy.

And here we go...

Hey everybody...we have made it back. I gotta tell you, Chicago is one beautiful city. Now, I haven't been to NYC, a problem I intend to remedy in '05 with Bill and Sarah Hunt, but Chicago itself is an incredible city. It's a city of pride and antiquity, a city of intensity and progression, a city for the ages. Millennium Park itself is of brilliant design and sits in the middle of eternal greatness. If I ever decide to move forward, you'll find me in the middle of Chicago...somewhere.

The rest of the time off was positioned in my old hometown. I caught up with a lot of folks and had a great time. Family visits were fantastic and revitalizing. I caught a White Sox game, courtesy of family (Thanks tons, Jerry) that placed me a few rows away from an area between home and first. We lost in the 10th inning with a nail-biter that relied on a single or double, at best a homer, by Sandy Alomar who was at full count. It was heaven being amidst Sox fans, whom I love dearly. What could be better? Uhhh, living there and doing it all the time!!

With Fall feeling like it is tightening its grip on the nation, we officially step into the season in a few days. It's welcome to me because I'm a seasons person. Thanks for all of your patience.

Many of you are excited, as we are here in the Bits/TAP universe, of the upcoming Pink Floyd SA-CDs. The SA-CDs in question are Wish You Were Here and Animals. It is been revealed to me by a very reliable source that the original masters are in the hands of James Guthrie and that the retails will be available in 2005. Hang tight!

Despite the end of a vacation, we're happy to be back amongst friends, the readers of TAP. We've had little information, believe it or not so it looks like not much has been missed. Interestingly, we received NO updates from one of the big labels so nothing missed there. BUT, that don't mean that we didn't get a lot of info, just not as much as I anticipated. This update is massive and will sit for a couple days while I get back into the swing of things.

We have 2 reviews for you. The first is of the promised John Cale album called HoboSapiens. HoboSapiens is a highly satisfying work that is immediately challenging and musically refreshing if not one of his more superior works. The second is George Bennett's review of the latest, and grand, work of Percy Sledge and his Shining Through The Rain. Many of you will remember Percy Sledge most for his "When a Man Loves a Woman."

As an aside, the latest issue of Playboy (October) has interesting trains of thought by folks in the industry of music. It's a bunch of fascinating, if not slightly detoured, points concerning the state of the industry. You'll find self-motivated and distraught answers like those of Tower Records' Russ Solomon as well as defiant words from Moby. While all had good arguments and explanations, none held the floor like the down to earth and unselfish words of Andy Gould, manager of Rob Zombie. Read it. See, it ain't ALL about the pictures.

We've piled it on today like we promised. We'll see you again on Wednesday.

While we were running around Illinois, Interscope announced the official date of release for the next U2 album which is named How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. The date, for those of you who haven't heard is November 23. There will be 3 release styles that include the standard release edition, Deluxe Edition, and Premium Edition. Both the Deluxe and the Premium Editions will have a DVD addition. Now that we're around, we'll be sure to let you know the second that we know what is on the two Special Editions.

Virgin Records places a large run of Rolling Stones' upcoming Live. This album documents their recent world tour and should be a pretty spectacular mix of great performances. The Stones are still one of our great generational bridges so many of us will look forward to this album, which, by the way, is scheduled for November 2.

Liberty Records announces a Merle Haggard album called Standards which will be available on December 14. It looks to be a collection of songbook tunes but we'll know more as the date approaches.

Astrelwerks informs us that the upcoming and still untitled project by The Chemical Brothers will actually release sooner than later on January 25th rather than the previously set date of February 1.

On the other side of the spectrum, Virgin Records anticipated release by N2U, self-titled, will move farther down calendar squares settling on the extended date of March 1, 2005. That's quite a jump from the originally intended release of November 2.

For Christopher O'Riley fans who enjoyed his piano interpretations of Radiohead tunes, this info should be appealing. O'Riley's camp informed us that he has finished initial recording sessions for a new album that will be interpetations of Radiohead b-sides and rarities. This is a novel approach and should complement O'Riley's recent True Love Waits. The new album is expected in early 2005.

The recently released Legacy Edition of Jeff Buckley's Grace will be afforded an LP issue on November 16.

Epic Records will issue a CD and DVD, sold separately, 'best of' for Mandy Moore. The album will be called The Best of Mandy Moore and will release on November 16.

Word Entertainment will issue the next CD from Denison Marrs on October 26. Word will also issue a 'best of' for Sixpence None the Richer called The Best of Sixpence None the Richer and will issue this on October 26. This set will contain 18 songs that will include 3 new tunes ("Loser Like Me"; "Us"; "Too Far Gone") and a Japanese commercial single version import of "Kiss Me".

There are 2 Lost Topic Tapes issues coming for Ramblin' Jack Elliott. One is known as The Lost Topic Tapes: Cowes Harbor - 1957 and the other is The Lost Topic Tapes: The Isle of Wight - 1957. Both are scheduled for October 26.

We just can't seem to get enough Grateful Dead in our classic diets, can we? Rhino realizes the deficiencies and plans to assist by releasing a 12CD set called Beyond Description 1973-1989 on October 26. This Box is a companion to The Golden Road 1965-1973. Contained in this set are 10 Dead albums during the mentioned period expanded with 65 bonus tracks. Here's the scoop:

  • Wake of the Flood - 3 bonus tracks

  • Terrapin Station - 6 bonus tracks
  • Shakedown Street - 5 bonus tracks

SInce I've been on vacation, this piece of news came in so I'm sure it's widely known. But, just in case it isn't widely known and for the benefit of those who haven't heard, it is reported that Blue Note Records will be issuing simultaneous releases of Feels Like Home by Norah Jones in both DVD-Audio and SA-CD formats. This is an early announcement so the discs are expected in 2005, February 1 for now.

Columbia is prepping a DVD for Aerosmith based on their A&E special called You Gotta Move. This DVD will become available on November 16.

Legacy will issue Alice Cooper: Trashes the World on DVD on November 16. Also on November 16, Legacy will issue Indigo Girls' Live From the Uptown Lounge on DVD. Legacy will issue an Iron Maiden DVD called The Early Years on November 9.

Columbia and Legacy team to issue a DVD for Kenny Loggins called Live From the Grand Canyon. Kenny Loggins: Live from the Grand Canyon was originally released in 1992.

Columbia will re-issue their 1996 video of Mariah Carey's Fantasy: Mariah Carey at Madsion Square Garden on November 16 as a DVD.

Also by Rhino, David Byrne's Live at Union Chapel and Crosby, Stills, & Nash's CSN: The DVDs (a 3DVD set), both of which will be available on October 26. The CSN issue has 2 live sets, Acoustic (from a 1991 show) and Daylight Again (from their 1983 tour) combined with the never before released Long Time Comin', a documentary of their 30+ years together as a recording and touring unit. Both sets will have 5.1 mixes.

Elektra Records announces a Jet DVD called Family Style, their first. This DVD will be issued with the obligatory 'behind the scenes' as well as a 5.1 mix. There are 13 songs on this DVD from Jet including a cover of Elvis' "That's Alright Mama." You lucky people.
