April 4, 2003

Welcome back, my friends, to show that never ends...That's us! I have worked tooth and claw to put up a string of reviews. I actually have two myself that are almost finished and...Greg Warner is putting the gloss on the DSotM review. We have those geared for release on Monday. But today, John Nelson gives his thoughts on Odyssey/Sony Classical's "American Tenors" and O.O. Records' Beiser/Schick Project, "Caught by the Sky with Wire". John Grace delivers the scoop on "Flying Groove", a various artists disc from BMG/RCA/Bluebird while Marco Passarelli grates metal with his listen to Voivod's latest, "Voivod". Finally, Grey Cavitt lets loose with his take on Steve Morse Band's "Split Decision" from Magna Carta Records. That's 1, 2, 3..4...5 reviews. That's a record.

We also have the weekly installment of Duane's Pit Stop. And whatever we come up with here. So sit back and enjoy the read.

First off, I want to remind you that Bruce Cockburn's upcoming release, "You've Never Seen Everything" is scheduled for June 10 from Rounder Records. Judging by his two new songs off of his compilation, "anything, anytime, anywhere", I'd say that this new album is going to be extraordinary.

A Lou Reed collection is on the schedule over at BMG from their BMG Heritage label. Called "NYC Man: The Collection", this 2CD album is streeting on June 3. There's no word on what BMG is going to put on this set given the many Lou Reed colections that are already in circulation. Regardless, I'm still curious as to what will be on it.

Capitol just put a Raspberries "Classic Masters" on the schedule for August 5 while EMI/The Right Stuff pencils in "Al Green - Anthology" for September 30. Capitol's DVD-Audio of The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" is scheduled now for July 22. The same date brings the new Dandy Warhols, "Welcome to the Monkey House", also from Capitol.

Good Charlotte fans will get to watch them on Saturday Night Live this Saturday, April 5. Now, who SNL needs to sign for a Saturday Night is The Music. Agree?

Universal/Geffen has bumped Peter Gabriel's SACD offering, "Up" again. This time the new date is June 3 although the rest of the catalogue is still targeted for the April 29 date.

Universal/Verve is offering up a really cool Ella Fitzgerald box set called "Complete 45s" that will street on September 30. Also, they have listed a 2CD "30th Anniversary Collection" for Lynyrd Skynyrd to be in stores on August 26.

You'll remember the Louis Armstrong 3 volume set from Columbia that is expected to arrive April 29 that we spoke off many posts back. We've got the cover art and we're passing it on for you. The discs, "The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings" art looks great.

Finally, before we run off into the weekend, I've just come across a penciled in 2CD Deluxe Edition for Marvin Gaye's "I Want You", for June 24. Now I want Marvin Gaye SACDs, especially the great "Let's Get It On", "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me". But I also want Wishbone Ash SACDs. C'mon Andy McKaie...make me a happy man before I die...please?

OK, that's it. Come back Monday for Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", The Moody Blues' "Live at Red Rocks" Deluxe Edition, Ani Difranco's "Evolve", and The Byrds' "Greatest Hits" SACD. Also watch The Digital Bits for my reviews of "The Complete Jam" DVD and Wishbone Ash's "Live Dates 3: The 30th Anniversary Concert".

Did I make good on my word to make up for yesterday? Like The Jam sing "...that's entertainment." Now...enjoy the weekend. Enjoy those reviews. Enjoy life!! I mean it.

April 3, 2003

Today's post, as I've stated yesterday, is a meager offering. The reasons, in large part, was that it was my birthday yesterday. Lots of celebration although I don't know why. But it was quite the last few days. And I enjoyed every minute. But, like Ian Hunter's guilt ridden words from a Mott the Hoople song, "..I feel somehow we let you down.." But we're going to make up for it tomorrow with all the stuff that you like. We have more reviews to post than you can shake a stick at, we have Duane's Pit Stop, we have artwork and release news. It's going to be huge.

I will leave you with one piece of news before signing off. Rounder Records will release Bruce Cockburn's newest album, "You've Never Seen Everything" on June 10. That's big news for fans. It's big news for me. Watch for that review.

I have received a ton of email from readers wondering just where in the hell is TAP's two cents on Pink Floyd's recently released SACD, "Dark Side of the Moon" is at. Well, folks. We have it. We're listening to it. And we should have something for you next week. As if you really need it by now. But if you're lingering, awaiting our judgement (yeah, right), it will be up next week.

Ok...I'll be back tomorrow with the super duper weekend edition that will take you all weekend to read.

Tomorrow...

April 2, 2003

We've received a lot of emails from readers who have enjoyed the interview with Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering and who has personally mastered more discs than I could ever listen to. But what fascinates me more than anything is that, as I was growing up, much of the music that I listened to and enjoyed immensely were either engineered or/and mastered by Bob Ludwig. Wow. In case you missed the review, read it here. It is also posted over on The Digital Bits.

We had a few reviews that would have posted today along with our daily input, but circumstances prevented me from formatting them for today. As mentioned previously, we have the review for Maya Beiser and Steven Schick's "Caught by the Sky With Wire" by John Nelson; "Flying Groove" by John Grace, who also has his JazzNotes available today; Grey Cavitt review of Steve Morse's "Split Decision" on Magna Carta Records; and my views on The Moody Blues' "Live at Red Rocks with The Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra" Deluxe Edition from Universal/Threshold. These reviews will post within the next few days. As a matter of fact, we may have around 6-7 full reviews around that time. That's on one day!! Again, apologies all around. It has been quite busy and dang if this site hasn't grown beyond my wildest dreams. You readers are great; I love ya!!

While this next paragraph was included yesterday, I'm reprinting it to make sure everybody gets a crack at reading it. I'll probably run it through the rest of this week.

If you had recently purchased the Ben Harper album, "Diamonds on the Inside", you may have purchased a copy protected issue that was designed for advanced copies. If you experience problems with the disc, EMI will replace your disc within 60 days of purchase. The first, and the best, way is to simply return it to the place of purchase where retailers have been alerted to the problem and are authorized to replace your disc. If that proves a problem, you can then call EMI direct at 800.914.8257 to receive your replacement copy. You can also write them at:

Projekt Records have new music on the release slate:

Black Tape for a Blue Girl has a wonderful set available on May 8. It's a limited edition 2CD set with only a run of only 2250 copies that will be hand-numbered. It features the highlights of the years 1986 - 2003. The title is "with a million tear stained memories".

On June 3, Projekt issues the latest Steve Roach album, "Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces" which will be available in 3 configurations. Part 1 will be available in stores as a 2CD set while Part 2 will be available as a 2CD set, mail-order only. Finally, if you want the entire set, like right now, you can mail-order the complete 4CD edition from Projekt.

On June 17, Projekt releases the new Faith & Disease album, "Passport to Kunming".

On July 8, Unto Ashes release their latest, "Empty Into White". The album will be released from Projekt. But why wait until July to have to hear tracks from it. For a few MP3s of the band, click here. Two tracks, "Allu Mari" and "Exeunt Omnia", are new and from the upcoming album.

Reader Danny Williams alerts me to the upcoming SACD releases from Mobile Fidelity. Aimee Mann's "Lost in Space" is scheduled for an August rollout. Also from MoFi is Albert King's "Years Gone By" in SACD. In mid year, at some point, MoFi will release Blood, Sweat, & Tears' "Blood, Sweat, & Tears 3". MoFi has a few later date SACD titles with John Coltrane's "Soultrane" scheduled for a May release; Leo Kottke's "6 & 12 String Guitar" scheduled for December; Miles Davis' "Steamin'", Kinks' "Everybody' s In Showbiz" for July, "Low Budget" for May and "Give the People What they Want" for mid-2003.

Sony has the new Beyonce Knowles album, "Dangerously in Love", which streets on May 27. For fans of Beyonce.

Brian Moura of the famed and comprehensive SACD upcoming release list emailed me today to share this bit of news concerning DVD-Audio and the fact that the group have elected to NOT pursue hybrid capability. While the reasons are varied, they primarily centre on the fact that most DVD players that were tested actually rejected the discs, not recognizing them. The legacy players suffered the most with an sobering success rate of only 27%. 27%!! This applies to the single layer, double sided discs. The failure rate is expected to duplicate for the double sided DVD-A discs as well. The firmware in the DVD players is widely cited as the reason for the failure. This bit o' news does not bode well for DVD-A hybrids. However, fans of the format should NOT fret over this. This does not impact the actual DVD-Audio disc. OK..so we may not get hybrid. The info doesn't say the plans are dead entirely but if it was, we move on and support the format, not because we want it to supplant any other format but because it's an alternative. And I don't mind. I don't really think that you folks mind too much either. Go combo-player. Everybody's happy. Thanks to Brian for his assistance in bringing this to my attention and a heaping measure of thanks for his tireless efforts to producing an exhaustive list of SACD releases, both current and upcoming. Speaking of DVD-Audio, I've heard that Pink Floyd's DSotM will be issued as a DVD-Audio by EMI with no street date set as of yet. the extras on that should be rockin'!

JazzNotes

by John Grace

It's been a few years now since the initial release of the Ken Burns film "Jazz." One of my kin says the filmmaker is so compelling, he'd gladly watch Ken Burn's "Plumbing." I won't go that far, but I do hope folks that are even remotely interested in the form go back and watch the show. Granted, it's a 10-episode commitment, but it's one part music appreciation, one part history lesson. If nothing else, consider the speakeasy explosion. One subject (whose name escapes me) estimated as many as 5,000 speakeasys existed in Manhattan alone. Oof, there's something inherently exciting about walking down to a basement, knocking on a big door, and hearing great jazz. Crazy days, the 1920's. The address of the Ken Burn's "Jazz" site is: http://www.pbs.org/jazz.

Here's another site worth looking at: the jazz site of National Public Radio. NPR is a great source of music information, for both established acts and newcomers. The address is pretty simple: www.nprjazz.org. Among other things, it's got information on jazz programming, recordings, and show transcripts. Although jazz is my thing, it was fascinating to hear a segment on Johnny Cash a few months back. If there's a definition of "hard living" in the dictionary, it probably says "see Johnny Cash." The original Man in Black, despite years of performing, is still very open to new music and those artists that create it. Impressive guy; great interview. The audio can still found on the NPR site.

In terms of new releases, my next purchase will probably be Wayne Shorter's "Alegria." It's on Verve records, and arrives in stores April 1. "Footprints Live!" was my initial review for Matt, and I'm still impressed by the disc. I first saw Wayne performing with Weather Report at the Playboy Jazz Festival in the early 80's. Some of the focus was on bass player Jaco Pastorius, but Wayne was a key figure in the creation of, and performances by the group. The sound was, above all else, progressive. The "fusion" tag is frequently hung on Weather Report, but that seems a little short-sighted. Just listen to "Birdland" and see what you think.

Spring has sprung, so get out there and listen to some live jazz. It can be heard everywhere, from the local high school band to open-air concerts to concert halls. Cinco de Mayo may still be a few weeks off, but give a listen to Latin Jazz a little early...

That's it for today. Tomorrow's post will be very meager as I have plans to be elsewhere for much of the day. I do apologize for this. Stay patient with me.

Tomorrow...

April 1, 2003

The first quarter of 2003 is now officially behind us. With a new quarter underway, we have to hope that the labels have some really exciting releases up ahead. And while we're in the mood for some great SACD/DVD-A releases, we still love the new stuff that's appearing. So whether that new stuff is material by bands like The Music or revisited remastered product like The Who or even collectible anthologies like Flatt & Scruggs, it's the music that matters.

We'll have a few reviews for you tomorrow, four as a matter of fact. John Grace listened to RCA's "Flying Groove"; John Nelson gives his thoughts on "Caught By The Sky With Wire" by Maya Beiser and Steven Schick. I gave a thoughtful listen to Universal/Threshold's reissue in Deluxe Edition of "The Moody Blues: Live at Red Rocks". Grey Cavitt has listened to a Steve Morse release and offers his comments. In the next few days, we should have the SACD review of "The Byrds Greatest Hits". And we have more coming all the time.

Journey fans will be able to watch a "Behind the Music" production on Journey, April 3 on VH1. Check your local listings for times in your area. Also, they have tour dates posted on their website. Thanks, Sarah.

While we're on the subject of TV, ABC Primetime hosts an exclusive 1 hour interview with Lisa Marie Presley on April 3. Ben Harper will be appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman on April 10. Mark your calendars.

EMI/Virgin rolls out May with Blur's 7th album, "Think Tank", their first since 1999. The disc from the US will feature US only exclusive content (enhanced) and will also be issued in a limited edition special digipak package. The disc will have a worldwide simultaneous release. The disc will contain 13 new songs including the single, "Crazy Beat". That album arrives in stores on May 6. And while the disc features a Parental Advisory, there will be an edited edition released. If you want to catch them on the telly, mark April 26 for The Late Late Night Show with Craig Kilborn and May 27 for The David Letterman Show.

Also on May 6 for those retro folks, The King Biscuit Flower Hour (remember that show; if you do, you're really dating yourself...I remember it ; -) ), features a live album for Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen. The album is a live greatest hits package featuring 13 classics including "Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)" and "Ubangi Stomp".

If we thought that only Commander Cody could do live renditions of greatest hits, then we have to consider 70s stronghold, Molly Hatchet. Also from King Biscuit Flower Hour, "Molly Hatchet Greatest Hits Live" features unreleased live tracks including "Flirtin' with Disaster". The disc releases on May 6.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark or OMD is getting a reissue of several of their classic albums. "Architecture & Morality", "Organisation", and "OMD", all feature remastering and rare bonus tracks. "Architecture & Morality" boosts the album with 6 bonus tracks:

  • Messages (single version)
  • I Betray My Friends
  • Taking Sides Again
  • Waiting For the Man
  • Electricity (Hannett/Cargo Studios Version)
  • Almost (Hannett/Cargo Studios Version)

The bonus Tracks for "Organisation" are:

  • Annex
  • Introducing Radios
  • Distance Fades Between Us
  • Progress
  • Once When I Was Six
  • Electricity (DinDisc 1980 Version)

And finally, the debut disc, "Orchestral Manouevres in The Dark" bonus tracks:

  • Extended Souvenir
  • Motion and Heart (Amazon Version)
  • Sacred Heart
  • The Romance of the Telescope
  • Navigation
  • Of All the Things We've Made
  • Gravity Never Failed

These three titles previous incarnations will be deleted from the catalogue as of May so deletion collectors should go and pick up what they can. A side note: If you thought that running out and buying titles that are scheduled for deletion is a stupid past time, think again. Those things creep up in value because of the fact that they are no longer available in that form. I have been asked repeatedly to alert fans to deletions because of this very fact.

Queensryche is getting a similar treatment with 7 of their titles filling the void left by earlier deletions. The first phase, scheduled for May 6 from Capitol includes the first 4 titles:

  • Queensryche - 10 bonus live tracks taken from a Japan show in '84 and digitally remastered.
  • The Warning - 3 bonus tracks, 2 of them live cuts. Remastered.
  • Rage for Order - 4 bonus tracks with 2 of them live cuts, a 12" version of "Gonna Get Close to You", and an acoustic version of "I Dream in Infrared" - Remastered
  • Operation: Mindcrime - 2 live bonus cuts. - Remastered.

EMI continues with a remastered and enhanced disc of Spandau Ballet's "True". The enhancement includes "True" discography, a photo gallery, home video footage, and "God" video along with a weblink.

EMI/Virgin releases a trio of Warren Zevon discs for May 6, all remastered and 2 of them with bonus tracks. The albums:

  • Wanted: Dead or Alive - 1970 Debut
  • Sentimental Hygiene - 2 bonus tracks, "Leave My Monkey Alone (Spanish Version) and "Nocturne" - replaces previous deletion.
  • Transverse City - an album of collaborations and includes an acoustic version of "Networking" as a bonus track.

A final note before we close for today. We are working on a different way to present the materials that we write about everyday. The front page will remain but we will begin to 'columnize' the various things that we talk about including a long planned TAPSheet, which will put upcoming releases into an ongoing calendar. The TAPSheet will not archive, but roll with the dates; removing old entries and installing new ones as the calendar progresses. I invite all of my label contacts to submit calendar entries for this feature. We will post 4 reviews tomorrow. I apologize for not getting promised reviews up today but the length of the post have exhausted my time. Additionally, and in the near future, I will be submitting DVD reviews to The Digital Bits on "The Complete Jam" 2DVD set featuring The Jam's videos and TV archives as well as Wishbone Ash's "Live Dates 3". Also upcoming to The Bits will be reviews for Steve Earle's "Transcendental Blues Live", Kittie's "Spit in your Eye", and The Cult's "Music Without Fear". That is just a sampling of upcoming DVD reviews. So, as Grey would say...Shalom!
