July 18, 2003

We're back again for the end of the week. I've been getting reacquainted to my past lately. I've recently acquired a Kenwood Sirius "Here2Anywhere" Home/Car radio set and let me tell you, I've been having fun. There are a load of channels, each dedicated to a specific style or time period. I'm hearing songs that I haven't heard in years. Plus, the jungles are back and the DJs are short and sweet. I like it. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I had promised you a review for T. Rex's Electric Warrior (Expanded and Remastered) and well..the truth of it is that there is more I need to add to it. So rather than rush it, I'll save it for Monday. However, I do have a review from DwDunphy of To Watch The Storms by Steve Hackett. Be sure to check that out.

And a weekend wouldn't be complete without the incendiary comments of Duane Leyva. He brings you another issue of Duane's Pit Stop.

Some things that we're working on around here? First off, we are completing a site search engine so that you can easily pull up keywords and go right ot a release info without having to search on your own. I know that enough of you have expressed your frustration in recalling info that you were interested in. Additionally, I thought that it might be fun to run polls around here just to see where you people are in your thoughts. That's forthcoming. We still have a batch of discs to get through review wise. We're also still looking for people interested in writing for the site. We have a need for people who can review very current stuff like Green Day, Something Corporate, etc. and can judge new and upcoming talents. I do have some reviews from some of you that I will get to in time. I'm not ignoring you.

Nelly Furtado has her upcoming TBA album pencilled in for November 25. The title will be expected in both a standard CD issue and a special edition with a bonus DVD from Dreamworks.

Some cancelled titles for you from BMG. Many of the Platinum and Gold titles went belly up today. The list of casualties are:

  • Alabama
  • Louis Armstrong
  • Cowboy Junkies
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
  • A Flock of Seagulls
  • Vince Gill
  • Michael Hedges
  • Waylon Jennings
  • Eartha Kitt
  • Gladys Knight and The Pips
  • The Lovin' Spoonful
  • Henry Mancini
  • Mindy McCready
  • The Outlaws
  • Carly Simon
  • Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey
  • Rick Springfield
  • Keith Whitley

If there are any changes that would put these back onto the market, I'll be sure to let you know. Perhaps someone from this department at BMG could inform and elaborate on the cancellations?

We'll be back on Monday with more and that promised review of Electric Warrior.

Enjoy the weekend.

July 17, 2003

Welcome back. We're nearing another end to another week. Tomorrow will have the newest edition of Duane's Pit Stop and hopefully, some new reviews. However, we do have a review for today, Brett Rudolph's review of The Hulk soundtrack. We're slipping back into this groove. Slow...but sure. Tomorrow there will be Rhino's workover of T. Rex's Electric Warrior which, incidentally is due on DVD-Audio from Rhino on November 11. But this review is that of the Expanded and Remastered Rhino reissue with some great extras making this package a necessary addtion to the library.

We have some info on the upcoming YES Expanded and Remastered CD reissues from Rhino. So YES fans, sit back and read what is planned for those discs. There are only four to be released on August 26, Close to The Edge; Relayer; Tales From Topographic Oceans; and Going for The One. We'll dissect them one at a time.

  • Going For The One - This album, as are the others in this series, will be digitally remastered and feature rare bonus material. The booklets are all redesigned and expanded with new liner notes. This disc contain the original 5 tracks along with the following bonuses:
  • Vevey (Revisited)
  • Amazing Grace
  • Going For The One - Rehearsal Track
  • Parallels - Rehearsal Track
  • Turn of the Century - Rehearsal Track
  • Eastern Numbers - an Early Version of Awaken
  • Montreaux's Theme

  • Close To The Edge - My personal favourite. This top album back in 1972 will contain 20 more minutes of music in addition to the original album. The bonus tracks are:
  • America - Single Edit
  • Total Mass Retain - Single Version
  • And You And I - An alternate version - yep, folks, the whole thing!
  • Siberia - a Studio Run through for Siberian Khatru.

  • Relayer - Contains the original 3 tracks and bolstered by the following bonuses:
  • Soon - Single Edit
  • Sound Chaser - Single Edit
  • The Gates of Delerium - Studio Run Through

  • Tales From Topographic Oceans - This 2CD set will contain the entire original album but also include the following bonus tracks:
  • Dance of the Dawn - Studio Run Through
  • Giants Under The Sun - Studio Run Through

We're looking forward to these discs and will povide a review of the material as it comes available. Remember that the remaining albums scheduled to get the same workover are Tormato; 90125; Drama; and Big Generator. The dates of those are unavailable at this time. We are anxiously awaiting the DVD-Audios of these titles.

Classically, Nonesuch is releasing a Steve Reich CD, Three Tales, with an accompanying DVD bonus on August 19. This disc features three themes, presented as a three part digital documentary video opera and is a colloboration with Reich and Beryl Korot. This 2CD set contains all the audio program and the DVD contains the Beryl Korot film.

If you were waiting for Jive/LaFace's issue of TLC's Greatest Hits in CD and separate DVD then scratch this release off your calendar as it's been officially cancelled by the label.

The DVD release of Kiss Symphony:The DVD will see the light of day on September 9 from Sanctuary Records and will be spread across 2DVDs.

If you're a Dokken fan, you'll get a Sanctuary released CD and companion DVD (although separate) on September 9. The set, Japan Live '95, will be a single disc along as will be the DVD.

Ok folks, that's enough for now. Tomorrow, of course, is the week-ender. We'll try to pack you with some more goodies to pull you through the weekend. 'Til then.

July 16, 2003

We've got a pretty cool day for you here at MusicTAP. But first...because we've have been bitchin' and moanin' about the state of modern radio, we've gone and acquired a Sirius Digital Radio to listen to while we work here. I've also acquired the car setup. I'm going to keep you abreast of how well we like it. I'll tell you this, I've been listening to a few stations and one thing that stands out for me is the jingles. I know, it doesn't take much to please me, eh? But actually, it is a nice touch. I'll keep you posted on the various aspects of the unit.

We have the latest Duane's Pit Stop posted here for your reading. And we have a whole batch of new release info springing from the wells of Warner.

On September 23, Disturbed will release a DVD, Music as a Weapon. Dwight Yoakam will have two titles available for DVD distribution, Pieces of Time and Just Lookin' For a Hit. Elephant Man releases Good to Go in CD and LP form while Emmylou Harris produces Stumble Into Grace. And don't forget that this is also the release date for The Flaming Lips' EP/CD, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell which includes a bonus DVD. Oh, but the 23rd of September is really a big circle on a calendar with not only the above stuff coming out but also the DVD-Audios mentioned yesterday from Neil Young as well as a CD w/bonus DVD, Rat Pack, from the crooners, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.

And it doesn't end there. Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003 arrives on shelves as a DVD-Audio as well as Rhino's Expanded and Remastered gifting of Television and their spectacular Marquee Moon and Adventure. Oh yeah, we're just salivating at the titles here.

Country fans get 2 Travis Tritt DVDs, A Celebration: A Musical Tribute to the Spirit of The Disabled Veteran and Greatest Hits From The Beginning. There is also a Randy Travis DVD scheduled for the same date, Forever and Ever.

On October 7, The Eagles have a TBA title slated. The package is expected to be a 2CD set. A special edition with a bonus DVD is scheduled for the same day as well. This date is also the expected date for the DVD-Audio of Led Zeppelin's How The West Was Won.

For Fleetwood Mac fans, there is a scheduled DVD called Tango In the Night for October 14. That oughta tide Ledge fans over until the expected release of their anticipated Rhino titles. An Expanded and Remastered Fleetwood Mac; a 2CD Deluxe Edition of Rumours; and a 2CD Deluxe Edition of Tusk is expected October 28. As a 'whisper', Lindsay Buckingham has something in the works.

We mentioned yesterday that R.E.M. was getting a lot of attention as well as a lot of discs being reworked and re-released. We also mentioned an IRS 'best of'. Well, now Warner will also issue a 'best of' for R.E.M. that is penciled in for October 28 in 3 flavours. The formats are a 2CD issue, a DVD-Audio version and a DVD. The title will be R.E.M. Greatest Hits.

The bummer news is that the DVD for The Ramones that we mentioned quite some months back is now cancelled. You'll remember the title being Ramones Around The World. Sorry 'bout that one folks.

The upcoming Mo-Fi release of John Lennon's Imagine has been bumped to August. Additionally, DTS Entertainment's Emma Shapplin which is TBA will be slated for September.

I know I said it yesterday but expect a review from Brett Rudolph and one from myself for tomorrow.

OK, that puts us at the end of the story for the day. The good thing is that we'll be back tomorrow. So until then...

As it turned out, I was the jackass in the cable snafu that I spoke about earlier. Being the guy who has to have maximum exposure, I've pushed the "threshold" of cable signal to the netherlands of ..well cable signals. In any case, the signal had to be boosted and this amplification requires a dedicated plug that has to remain..well..plugged in. I pulled the plug. Uhh..moving on...

We're moving into full time status rather quickly despite having to spend a few hours doing some other, less gratifying things. What we have come up with for you today is a review of 4 King Biscuit Flower Hour discs. Remember King Biscuit Flower Hour? If not, that's OK..the review will initiate, so to speak.

We have some calendar additions for you as well as a few updates and corrections. The correction comes by way of Universal who informed me that the upcoming Fixx disc, React, is not a remastered disc but rather a straight reissue at a budget price. I apologize for any confusion. Also, the upcoming Neil Young DVD-Audios which include Greendale, ASnB, Re-Ac-Tor, OtB, and H&D will street on September 23.

Calendar etchings are pretty interesting. For August 19, King Biscuit Flower Hour will unleash Ramones' NYC 1978 and the following 4 Greatest Hits Live albums, America; Billy Squier; Bachman Turner Overdrive; and Part One of Renaissance.

On September 2, UB40 will have Best of American Songbook released, details sketchy.

Moving onto the 16th of September, IRS Records will issue a 'best of' for R.E.M. R.E.M. is sure getting the attention this year, deservedly so.

Here's a special hello to The Ledge, a Fleetwood Mac message board who is very anxious for those upcoming Rhino Expanded and Remastered series reissues.

Be ready for Duane's Pit Stop tomorrow and some more reviews.

Tomorrow...

Yikes...when it rains, it pours...and I mean it really pours. We have our house in pretty damn good order. The flooring is in and most everything is where we want it to be. THEN...we have our cable guy install a HDTV box for our telly and wouldn't you know it, knocks out all the cable in our house including our internet service. I have an MSN account on the laptop for travelling but have lost essential things. Bummer!! In short, Comcast is expected in today to rectify the condition. Let's hope that it gets done so we can get back to work. I have a spiffy new TAP office and can't fully enjoy it just yet.

In any case, we have some good stuff for you looming in the horizon. Marshall Blonstein of Audio Fidelity and who used to helm the presidency of Island Records will be talking to us for an upcoming interview/article. So watch for that goodie. Additionally, we have music to explore and reviews to post. So keep coming back because we have some cool things in store.

Just know that we haven't deserted you. We just don't have as clear a picture to present as we have been out of touch for the better part of two weeks. We have put the feelers out and folks in the know KNOW we're back. Know what that means...

Here are a few pieces that were let out to me during my "absence"...

  • New Andrew W.K. album scheduled for September 9 from Island Records. The album is called The Wolf.
  • The Fixx's React will get a remastered version out on August 9.
  • August 26 will see the release of a 2CD Masterworks disc for The Yardbirds spanning the calendar from 1963 to 1965.

We'll be back tomorrow, hopefully from homebase. Keep your fingers crossed.

Tomorrow...
