Folks..I've had a minor snafu with our email server which translates to 'idiot who left the "leave messages on server" box checked in his email client'. This also means that I received none of your emails. This problem is now fixed so, if you wish, resend those messages. Sorry. Ah yes, the weekend edition. Of course, that means that I have to pound out the reviews that I have been remiss in writing. But a weekend of music listening, Super Bowl, my Saturday night passion -Saturday Night Live-, and relaxation will recharge these batteries. Well, I've discovered that Sony had released Blue Oyster Cult's "Agents of Fortune" on January 21 after all. Thanks to a few readers who alerted me to having seen the disc at several of their record haunts. I immediately set out to find me a copy since I haven't convinced Sony to front me SACD review discs as of yet. And man, did I have difficulties. Nobody had a copy, much less even know what the hell I was talking about. Most were referring to the 2001 remaster that had 4 bonus tracks. Long story short, I found a lone copy in the hinterlands and bribed Mrs TAP with a meal on the town. It worked. A note about the disc: Ohhh...it's so-so good. The stereo mix alone is gorgeous. Watch for a review soon. We've spoke about The Music and their upcoming release but now you can actually see them perform live on The David Letterman Show, Tuesday March 18th. I recommend the viewing if you can stay awake for it. You'll like them. I have a note from EMI concerning the OMD reissues that I informed you about in yesterday's post. Of course, it's an old song...but they have been pushed back to May 6 from their original February 25. But that's why we're here, to keep your calendar updated, right? Interested in Blues? And who really isn't considering that it's a main component to much of rock today. EMI is releasing a series of blues visitations referred to as, quite simply, The Blues Series. Releasing on June 24th, from various sub labels, are the following artists:
The run is limited to 5000 units so if you're a blues collector, these limited run editions might be great adds to your library. Capitol is planning a high profile Beach Boys hits package on June 24th and which follows the anticipated DVD-Audio release of "Pet Sounds". Remember folks, while DVD-Audio is heaven with a specialized DVD-A player, it sounds pretty dang good on your DVD-Video player as well. Additionally, when you do acquire your specialized combo player (SACD/DVD-A), you'll have some shiny discs to test out. Getting back to Beach Boys, the hits package called "The Very Best of The Beach Boys" should be a nice set. We don't have the particulars, but we will get them eventually. And when we do, you'll hear every detail. Jazz and Greg Osby fans will be happy to know that Osby has a new, as yet untitled work, scheduled for June 10th by Blue Note. The Blue Note SACDs that were scheduled and then put on hold have resurfaced with a new date. One of them is the high profile Norah Jones and her Grammy nominated debut. The titles that are scheduled for April 22 release are:
I'm cleaning up after myself now. Christian rock band, Avalon, have a 'best of' on the schedule for March 25. I've not heard any output from this band but I have heard tons of good press and word of mouth. I'll have to spend some time to hear what the noise is all about. that release comes from Sparrow Records. Fans of Steely Dan will absolutely wired when they hear this next piece of news. Quite a few months back, we reported that the two mainstays have ecked out some studio time. Well, the payoff is near. Scheduled for release on May 6, "Everything Must Go" will be the latest Steely Dan album since 2000's "Two Against Nature". Cool, huh?! On Monday, we'll take a look at EMI's huge collection of upcoming "Classic Masters" and "Greatest Hits" titles. I'll list every upcoming anticipated title of those series for your hand wrenching pleasure. And I must say, there are some very nice names in there. Also, expect a flurry of new disc reviews. We're also working with Warner Elektra Asylum (WEA) on bringing you their upcoming lineup so hopefully we can give you some of that on Monday or Tuesday as well. Thanks to Andy and Ben for their tireless assistance in that regard. I'm going back to my listening of Columbia/Legacy's SACD for Blue Oyster Cult and their defining "Agents of Fortune". Thanks to readers Ken VanTassell and Hans Schoppa for thougthful alerts as to the ready availability of "Agents of Fortune". My ears and brain thank you. Have a spectacular weekend. We look forward to seeing you on Monday. Stay safe, enjoy the Super Bowl and some great music. Duane...stop already!! The ratings for The Osbournes have dropped dramatically. I, myself, was very excited for the new season to begin. After the first three episodes, however, it became very boring. I quit watching. Now, it looks as if half of it's audience have also tuned out. But the real news today comes as a result of RIAA's CEO, Hilary Rosen and her abrupt decision to 'hang up the spurs'. Citing her need to be with her young children and electing to finish out the year, Rosen will leave at the height of visibility for the RIAA as it continues to battle traders and a downshifting CD economy. The RIAA searches for her replacement who will need the nerves of steel that Hilary Rosen possessed. The Cranberries have terminated their Island/Universal contract. No word on who their next label will be but the band cited deflating label interest as the reasoning for the defection. The Cranberries haven't enjoyed the sort of continuing success that they have in the past so scapegoats abound. The Bee Gees have rightfully decided to cease after the death of brother Maurice Gibb. However, I'm willing to bet that,in time, the brothers will reform for another run. I can't begin to tell you how depressed I was all day with the realization that BOC's "Agents of Fortune" was delayed. I will have a high strung two months to wait. Guess what, folks? Apparently, I have irked Duane to the point of 'scratching' insanity. So, I told him to do his own column. Damned if he didn't produce a little something that he wants to turn into a weekly. He is the guy who understands stuff that I have to work with a little so at the end of MY column, I'll post his. Let me know what you think. We're reading that Biohazard have pulled off the Biohazard/Kittie tour. Vocalist/Bassist Evan Seinfeld was hospitalized for an unknown reason but it must have been serious enough to necessitate the leaving the tour. We'll keep an eye on this news for you. Rhino is working on a Ronnie James Dio box set concentrated on his career with his many bands and solo experiences. that includes Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Elf, and Dio. And for Molly Hatchet fans, their new live double disc, "Locked and Loaded" from SPV Records will be issued on February 24. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) has 3 reissues that are remastered with bonus tracks. These are important titles that deserve the treatment:
These titles have been out of print and will release on February 25. If you were a fan of Murray Head from back in the day, he has 9 reissues coming back to you. You may, or may not, remember his 1984 hit, "One Night in Bangkok" and for the theme song for "Jesus Christ, Superstar":
OK, I'm wrapping it up. Check back tomorrow for more updates. And I'm working feverishly to get reviews done. So watch for those as well. Now read Duane's column. Duane's Punk and Blues Notes Hello MusicTAP readers. Today marks my first column done on a weekly basis regarding Punk Rock and Blues. I'll offer this to you in the same way that Matt does in his daily column without SACD [he's nuts - Editor] references and bands such as the Elder Wishbone Ash [he's insane - Editor] on just about every sentence. I hope to give you, the readers, both useful and informative news. With that having been said, let's go. On the Punk scene, The Damned are preparing a live concert DVD. There is new Rancid in the works, according to Epitaph. With Rancid busy at work recording their newest album and Brett Gurewitz, once again, producing the album (he did their previous release) and with Nick Raskulinecz engineering, we can expect another big set. Look for that to hit stores sometime in June 2003. Dropkick Murphy's 'Score One For Charity' fatcityrockers.com reports: "As a warm up for their annual St. Patrick’s Day extravaganza, the Dropkick Murphys, along with Kicked In The Head, will be taking part in a Boston Bruins Alumni charity event at The Rack in Boston. Although this posh pool hall is about as punk rock as your average frat party it does put both bands in a very intimate setting. Tickets are going for $100 a pop and can be purchased by downloading this form from The Rack’s website: www.therackboston.com/images/bruinchallengeform.pdf. New Recover: There's a new video for "My Only Cure" from Recover on www.fiddlerrecords.com. There's also a new song off the Bled's up-coming release. The song is called "Dale Earnhardt's Seatbelt." The New Official Online Home Of The Angry Samoans Gale Force Records is now the official on-line home of legendary punk band, The Angry Samoans. Due to the fact that their official site is never updated, the band has authorized Gale Force Records to create a new on-line community for their fans. The Angry Samoans are still at it, playing shows for the last few years all over California and even making a trip up to Seattle to play the Experience Music Project with The Dickies and Dwarves to 1000 people. This summer, The Angry Samoans will be embarking on their first ever tour of Europe and the UK, including a stop at the last ever Holidays in the Sun Festival in June. Gale Force Records is a new punk label based out of Hollywood, CA. The first few bands to sign to Gale Force is SideKicK, Split Decision, Blockage, and The Underhills from San Diego. Look for an upcoming spring sampler of the label's bands and some great old school and new school punk bands. Some early confirmed bands River City Rebels, Rock Kills Kid, Angry Samoans, Dickies and many more. Check out the Official Samoans info site and Gale Force Records at www.galeforce-records.com. NOFX Warjournal - You can experience the process of recording an all new album with NOFX by reading the War on Terrorism War Journal. The first entry from Erik Melvin can be read here. MXPX SuperBowl Commercial Reeko writes: The word on the street is to keep your ears peeled for a Diet Coke commercial during the SuperBowl that features a new MxPx track from their upcoming record. So all you punk rock jocks, check it out. The Living End will record their next album in America. The band will head to the USA as soon as Big Day Out is over. This will be the first album for The Living End since a car crash seriously injured lead singer Chris Cheney 18 months ago. The positive thing is that there are now plenty of new songs from The Living End to play with and they are nearly all new. "There was a couple of scraps and bits and pieces left over from the last album but out of the almost 50 songs that we've demoed, there is probably only 3 that have older ideas in them. Chris just keeps popping them out" he says. The band plan to release their 3rd album midyear. Vans Warped 2003 Dates (venues to be confirmed later) 6/19: Boise,ID Onto Blues Notes: Tone-Cool Records recording artists Susan Tedeschi and North Mississippi Allstars today each scored their second career Grammy® Award Nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. Nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, the Susan Tedeschi hit “Alone” from her album "Wait For Me" was singled out along with songs by Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, and Avril Lavigne. In 2000, Susan was nominated in the Best New Artist category on the strength of her certified-gold national debut record, "Just Won't Burn". Also from Tone-Cool Records, "The Story of TONE-COOL", a 24 song survey of the label's recordings. Includes two tracks from Susan Tedeschi, Rod Piazza, and more. Release date is set for February 25th. That’s it for now folks. I will have some more Blues News after the Super Bowl when I head over to Blind Mellons and Croce’s in San Diego, CA will have more soon. GO RAIDERS! [groan - Editor]. I'm all stocked up on some interesting news for today. But I'm going to start out with this. I couldn't get a preview copy of Blue Oyster Cult's new SACD version of their incredible "Agents of Fortune" so I had to settle for buying one for myself. And could I get one on the day of release? No! Tower doesn't have it. Virgin doesn't have it. Wherehouse didn't even know what I was talking about. "SACD, what?" Guess, I'll have to settle, for the time being, to listening to the CD. Blue Oyster Cult SACD "Agents of Fortune" Update [5:45a] I was just alerted by reader, Ken VanTassell, that despite the official Sony internal schedules, "Agents of Fortune" is delayed until March 11. That's right, folks. So scratch that calendar and remark it. Check this link out here. Official word is now from Blue Oyster Cult The 5.1 mix is done by original album engineer, Shelley Yakus. Thanx again to Ken. Speaking of Wherehouse, the newswires are reporting that the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It has been years since I last purchased anything from this company due to the fact that their costs were always 4-5 dollars too high. I'm beginning to feel like a ping pong ball. No sooner do I report that Peter Gabriel's SACD catalogue have been relegated to the hinterlands of release dating than the schedules pop it back into existence. The new dates are now April 1. I received a letter from reader, Carl Pearson, concerning the upcoming SACD release of the Peter Gabriel catalog in Europe. Reported by High Fidelity Review, the discs will be released in March of this year. Additionally, the 5.1 multichannel "Up" is also scheduled to be released at the same time. If you can't wait, point your mouse to some online CD seller and pick it up. You'll definitely be the envy of many. Check out the article. I've checked with the official schedule for EMI/Virgin in Europe and nothing is listed...yet. There is also a little noise about the entire Simple Minds catalogue being set to SACD. However, it appears to be a Euro venture and not a US move. I'll be watching for this piece of info. Please note that this piece of info qualifies as rumour as it has not been substantiated. I just wanted to get your hopes up. I'm bad, ain't I? Seriously, I want some of these titles myself. And I'm absolutely loving this wave of catalogue releasing as SACD. Absolutely. Fans of Wishbone Ash will be very pleased to know that "Here to Hear" and "Strange Affair" will soon be re-released. Insiders tell me that the two discs will be released as a 'two-fer'. The re-release of "Strange Affair" ends a 12 year 'out-of-print' drought that should please Wishbone Ash aficionados like me. A second very interesting bit o' news have to do with the discovery of master tapes of songs performed by the first line up of Wishbone Ash that includes Ted Turner and the second lineup that includes Laurie Wisefield. No insight - yet - of whether these represent songs recorded during sessions but never used or live songs. It appears as if Talking Elephant Records will be releasing these. Thanks Leon, for the tip. Now, if Talking Elephant Records (maybe) or Columbia Records (unlikely) were to reissue Laurie Wisefield pre-WBA band, Home and their two albums on CD, I'll be as happy as they make 'em. Talking about great lost 'out of print' discs, how about Spirit's "Spirit of 76" released by Mercury. I'd be happy. While I'm at it..."International Heroes" by Kim Fowley from Capitol. I'd then be real happy. I'm done...for now. What about you folks? Be interested in hearing what you'd like to see resurfaced. Blink 182 will be recording their new album over the next five months hoping for a summer release. We'll call this one a day. See you back here bright and early, Thursday. A sort of bad news concerning Peter Gabriel's SACD issue of "Up" is that it has been placed on indefinite delay. The release date has been listed at June 6, 2006 which is the industry's way of saying..."when it comes out". I say sort of bad news because I think that being such a high level disc, it cannot help but be released. Be patient. I'd rather see this done right rather than rushed out. In addition, several other intended Gabriel releases have also acquired the fearsome 06/06/06 release date. As soon as I hear something, you'll know it. Ohhh...Rock and Roll. Ain't nothing definite about it. An interesting note on Martin Scorsese today. It's noted that he is going to film a high profile show with Aerosmith and a series of performers. It sounds as if Scorsese would like to replicate the beauty of "The Last Waltz" with another popular band. I'll keep an eye on this. I'm still of the mind that Scorsese's "The Last Waltz" IS the end all-be all of concert films. I wish him luck in his attempt. Also, in Aerosmith related news, the band has teamed with KISS to perform as co-headliners for at least 30 dates. Aerosmith will be touring to support their upcoming album with Columbia. Why does that make me smile? Fact is, I've missed Aerosmith and their Columbia days. So, I'm keeping an eye out on this release. Anybody agree with me? Anybody like "Get Your Wings" over "Pump"? If I had a poll on this site, I'd ask this very question. But you can send me email. I'm curious. Well, the news is certainly slow and hard to come by. I do have a few new additions to the schedules that I can throw in here. Parliament fans get three Mercury/Casablanca titles on April 8. These titles will be remastered. As always, as the days draw closer to actual release, I get more details. When I get those details, I'll let you in on the scoop. Thankfully, there are new details every week so we always get a little something from somebody. The Parliament titles:
Missing are the very necessary "Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome" which yielded the great "Flashlight" and "Clones of Doctor Funkenstein" but maybe it'll show up very soon. I've always been a fan of Clinton and Parliament/Funkedelic back in the 70s and look forward to these discs. On February 25, The Temptations' 1967 "In a Mellow Mood" gets remastered and reissued. No word on extra bonuses. We'll see you back here tomorrow. Welcome back. Before I get started, I want to say hi to a good friend of mine, Noelle. Hi Noelle! So, what did you think of those football games yesterday? I watched the NFC Championship on a nice big ole widescreen in Hi Definition. One word. Wow!! You could actually read the player names on the back of the jerseys from an overhead view. It's that clear. It's that crisp. Ok...so what's up for new stuff. I have to dig a bit as we have revealed quite a bit over the past few weeks. But lets see what is tucked away for release somewhere. February releases are absolutely huge. It would take me pages and pages to merely recount what's coming out. With that said, I hit on what I think that many of you would most likely be interested in. But every once in a while, we see something that only the most astute music fan would appreciate. Example? This guy played with one of the most influential rock stars that everybody knows. His name? Mick Ronson. I mention him because one of his solo albums, notably "Slaughter From 10th Avenue" is scheduled for a February 25th release as a remastered reissue. Mick Ronson played guitar for David Bowie's most fruitful years including "Ziggy Stardust". So.. for completists, be ready. It'll probably be issued in a small run so you'll have to be quick. Discs like these are here, then gone. Sometimes forever. Also on February 25 are a small collection of remastered reissues for Grateful Dead. The following discs get an expanded treatment:
Let's hope that this is the start of a revitilization of the WB/Grateful Dead catalogue. Then there are the BMG/Arista batch which contain some great issues. Then...DVD-A? Oh yeahhh! We're watching. As a reminder, Zwan's "Mary Star of the Sea" is still pegged to it's January 28th date and is delivered in two ways. The first is the standard single disc while the second issue includes a bonus DVD. Lou Reed's "Raven" from Warner/Reprise also has a January 28 release date. "Raven" is being released in two ways, a 2 disc, eight panel limited edition and the pared single disc version. Faith Hill's "When The Lights Go Down" issues on February 11 from Warner. Also on that date, "International: The Best of New Order" from New Order can be expected. Joining that Mick Ronson disc is one from W.A.S.P. The disc is "W.A.S.P." and will be reissued as a remaster. The date, again, is February 25. Blackie Lawless, from W.A.S.P., has recently come out in defense of Pete Townshend concerning Pete's recent arrest. I received the following press issue which contains Blackie's official statement: Gathering support for Townshend... Judge not lest ye be judged.... I have watched the events in the last few days surrounding the very public arrest of The Who visionary Pete Townshend. I am angered and appalled at the way the news media has made a circus of their portrayal of this case. But they can't really be blamed as they are the same ones that were there covering the Crucifixion back in the day. There's nothing to Forgive - They "DO" Know What They Do - they just cant help it. I am really pissed off and at the lack of support by artists who owe their very existence to this man. But I am especially aggravated and disappointed at the Public Distancing by the very musicians who are supposedly closest to him. Elton John "I hope it's not true" ! You gotta be kidding me. LET YE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. If its true that A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED or A MAN'S TRUE WEALTH IS MEASURED BY HIS FRIENDS then Pete's gonna have to find some new FRIENDS when the dust settles on this one. This brings to mind 3 very public DENIALS a couple of thousand years ago which involved another Peter. This time the tables are turned and its Peter that's being DENIED. Denied by "Friends" that are scared to be considered guilty through association and the ramifications that could possibly go along with it. Oddly enough it was the disciple Peter that was sent by God to claim what is now St. Peter's Square in Rome. The same St. Peter's Square where the Vatican sits. The same Vatican which houses the largest collection of Pornography (including Child Pornography) in the World. Possessed by the Vatican according to them to "Aid them in Research" and to "Better familiarize themselves in the ways of the World". I don't think the World could handle any more of their "Familiarization". I learned my craft of writing lyrics from this man. I studied his writings to a point where I knew the man before I ever met him. His spiritual being and beliefs. Without those Spiritual beliefs the World would have never heard " Pure and Easy" and "The Song is Over". But of all the gifts he's given me, the greatest is to Tell The Truth. Tell the Truth no matter how painful, or how it may expose the darkest places in you. Tell the Truth and let the Whole Damn World be their Voyeuristic self. All serious writers, ALL of them, research sources before they put pen to paper. Anyone who has had a personal history of abuse in their past, be it physical or sexual will spend a life time looking for answers. Questions that may never be answered that haunt. The child that still exists in all of us, the child that is frozen in it's vulnerability and inability to control the actions of those bigger, stronger and older will spend the rest of its life trying to make sense, to understand The Sins of The Father. That being said, I don't believe for one minute Pete Townshend is guilty of anything more than Doing the Research he said he was doing. I sincerely hope that other musicians and Friends of his who believe in him will come forward to show support and rally around this extraordinary man. I am not afraid, I am Proud to voice my feelings here and if there are those who still believe in the things he has stood for -- then come forward NOW and be heard. Rock is and will always be a target for authority. He is still my mentor - I love this man. Blackie Lawless - W.A.S.P. Fans of Charlie Parker get a few surprises as Savoy Jazz readies "Bird Returns" on February 11. On February 25, look for the 2 disc "Anthology - 1950-1954, New York". If you're a fan of Jesse Colin Young, then you'll enjoy the reissues of some of his discs. Released in two phases and from Liquid 8 Records:
I'm going to call it a day right here. We'll keep our eyes peeled for release info as they become available. See you tomorrow. Copyright © 2002 Matthew Rowe. All rights reserved. Site is designed for 1024x768 resolution. |
