January 2, 2003

We're a month away from a 1 year anniversary. I feel great about that. We have stuck to the guns, haven't gotten bored, and maintained the site all the while making changes to create a better reading experience for everyone. I want to thanks those that have visited us on a regular basis. You're why I keep doing this. Here's to 2003 for all of us.

Some release info from Epitaph Records:

  • The International Noise Conspiracy - Bigger Cages, Longer Chains. This EP contains 6 songs including a cover of N.E.R.D.'s "Baby Doll". Five of the tracks are unreleased. Due January 21.
  • Bombshell Rocks - From Here and On. Thirteen new songs on their 3rd release. Due January 21.
  • Turbonegro - Ass Cobra. Due February 25.
  • Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes. Due February 25.
  • Death by Stereo - Into the Valley of Death. Due April 22.

Billboard is reporting that Sonic Youth fans will be seeing the re-release of the DGC's "Dirty" on March 4th. The band has come up with 20 additional recordings; some are rehearsal tracks and some are B-sides. The release will feature a 28 page booklet that will include essays from some of the band members and others.

I'm looking into an interesting upcoming release of a Crawler disc called "Pastime Dreamer". As soon as I hear back, I'll get with you to let you know what I have found out. Also, a re-release of Mick Ronson's (Bowie's Spiders From Mars' guitarist extraordinaire) "Slaughter on 10th Avenue". Again, no info. Oh, those phone bills.

Has anybody heard of Ikara Colt, a punk band from England on Epitaph Records? Well...get ready for a treat. Not only are they excellent , they're retro in sound. Epitaph is streaming the entire album, "Chat and Business", released on November 10th. Here's the link. Lemme know what you think.

I completed my review of Victory Records' Somehow Hollow and their first release with the label, "Broken Wings and Rusted Halos". Somehow Hollow has risen from the ashes of Grade.

We have some updated February 11th release titles for you from EMI and their associated labels:

  • Al Green - Green is Blue - CM/TRS/The Right Stuff
  • John Hammond - Ready for Love - Back Porch/Narada
  • Stefon Harris - The Grand Unification Theory - Blue Note
  • Leo Kottke - The Best of The Capital Years - Blue Note
  • Leo Kottke - The Best of The Chrysalis Years - Blue Note
  • Massive Attack - 100th Window - Virgin
  • 8 James Bond Sountrack Reissues - EMI
    Diamonds Are Forever
    Dr No
    For Your Eyes Only
    From Russia With Love
    Live and Let Die
    Octopussy

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    These titles are Midline priced.
  • Yanni - Ethnicity - Virgin
  • Yanni - Ethnicity CD w/ bonus DVD - Virgin

AudioWorld has a story concerning BMG's first foray into hi-res with RCA's Elvis Presley hits package, "Elv1s, 30 Number 1 Hits". BMG announced that the DVD-Audio released on December 10th debuted at the number 1 spot on sales charts. But the cool thing about this particular disc is something that I would like to see on a regular basis, at least for the time being. That thing is an A:B feature allowing you the ability to hear 3 songs before hi res and after. I'd love to see this feature more often.

We're keeping an eye peeled for SACD/DVD-A discs that are now out but we might have missed. I've found a Simple Minds' Best Of that contains 32 tracks and is an SACD Hybrid released from Virgin.

We'll be back tomorrow with more.

January 3, 2003

We are light on news this morning so we're going to make this short.

It appears as if The Black Crowes have played their last notes together as a band. Chris Robinson has spoken of the band as if they no longer exist. The great ones always seem to fizzle this way, don't they?

If you were/are a Styx fan, Tommy Shaw has revealed that the band's newest album, "Cyclorama", will be released on February 18th and will enjoy a bevy of guest appearances including Billy Bob Thornton, Brian Wilson, and Tenacious D.

Finally, Billboard reports that The Cardigans will issue their fifth, "Long Gone Before Daylight" in March of 2003. No word on a US release as this one will be released in the UK.

Duane will be showing up with the review for Iron Maiden's Greatest Hits package later on today so come back for that if you're an Iron Maiden fan.

We'll pop back in here later on this evening to wrap up the week and head into the weekend. I've a feeling we're going to be very busy this weekend...

We have a nice little update from Universal Music with some extras thrown in for splash. These are for the February 4th and 11th release dates. We'll hop right to it and exhaust the release data. I think you'll find that there is something for everybody here. Also, on Monday there will be a review from Duane on the new Iron Maiden Greatest Hits disc. And more.

I'm going to bed.

January 4, 2003

I have been alerted by one of our faithful readers that the upcoming Peter Gabriel "Up" in SACD doesn't show on Tower Records or other sites when attempting to order this title. I've done a little checking and, interestingly enough, the title does not list anymore on some of the sources that I have. Of course, that doesn't mean that the title is not forthcoming, it just means that it may have been delayed. I'll check with Universal personally on Monday and see if I can pick up on any release information concerning this title.

Delayed titles happen all the time and release dates are not set in stone. To put your minds at ease on it's eventual release, here is Universal's Special Format site that you may all want to bookmark anyway. Move your mouse over the SACD logo on the left side of the page and then select 'Releases' on the pop-up menu. Select 'Coming Soon' at the top right of the page and there you'll find the official announcement of the Peter Gabriel "Up" SACD.

I'll find out the scoop for you so keep checking back.

A big thanks to reader Dan Wolfson for sounding the alert.
