50th Anniversary 2LP/2SACD Audiophile Box For The Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request

It’s nice to know that past albums from The Rolling Stones are still important enough to pursue the quality of an SACD release from a major label. In this case, the major label is Abkco, who released many of the Stones classic sets. Some years back, Abkco released SACD versions of all of the Stones albums under its tree. Those were well-received. And now, with the 50th Anniversary of Their Satanic Majesties Request around the corner (it was released on December 8, 1967), Abkco has decided to release a somewhat limiting package of the album with a 2LP/2SACD set. This new reissue will feature new remastering on both the Stereo and Mono sides, which account for the double formats here.

On September 22, this new box will feature two LPs pressed on 180g-weight vinyl. One will contain the Stereo version, while the other will provide the Mono version. The SACDs are similar in that they will feature the Stereo and Mono versions. It would be nice if the label would look beyond the niche market  (and perhaps they will) , and present standard CD reissues for sale of the new Bob Ludwig remasters. Nevertheless, it is equally important to understand that the SACDs are Hybrid and can therefore be played in standard CD players. It’s important to note that there are NOT any additional bonus track inclusions for this.

This 50th Anniversary Audiophile Edition will be cool with the original lenticular cover restored to the LPs. A 20-page book will accompany this exclusive and numbered edition.

New 3CD Columbia Retrospective Box, The Real…Mott The Hoople

Mott The Hoople has an amazing story to their history. At one time the band had planned to give up their Rock n roll ways despite being signed to Atlantic Records and having four excellent albums out. Soon, David Bowie arrived, and with Mick Ronson, soon turned the band into the powerhouse they were meant to be. Their debut release, All The Young Dudes, on Columbia Records produced the still-memorable Bowie-penned “All The Young Dudes” song. And anyone who has heard this album can attest to its selections that also includes a stunning cover of “Sweet Jane” (Velvet Underground).

In the remaining years left to the original band, they delivered two more great studio albums on Columbia Records (Mott – 1973, The Hoople – 1974). Between the last two, Mick Ralphs left to form Bad Company, and Ian Hunter left for a solo career after the last album. The live set, Mott The Hoople Live issued in 1974 to great success in both the US and the UK. The remaining band continued as Mott, issuing Drive On (1975), and Shouting And Pointing (1976). It goes without saying that Mott The Hoople had quite an impact on Rock and Roll. It may no have been as impactful as, say Led Zeppelin, but nevertheless, ask any fan of the band what THEY think of Mott The Hoople, and you’ll see an instant smile. then, get ready to sit and listen.

On September 22, Sony will release a 3CD set collecting  45 tunes from their Columbia sets, both as Mott The Hoople, and as the Ian Hunter-less Mott. It will be called The Real…Mott The Hoople.

New 5CD, 100-Track Box For John Lee Hooker, King Of The Boogie

This is the 100th year of the birth date of Blues great, John Lee Hooker. It would be criminal to not acknowledge it in some way. Over the course of John Lee Hooker’s prolific career, he released well over 50 albums beginning with his Chess Records album issue, House Of The Blues, back in 1959. He warmed the heart of many a Rock fan, and Rock stars. Before he albums arrived, he released a string of iconic singles including “Boogie Chillen” from 1948.

With this upcoming milestone, the newly formed Universal brand of Craft Recordings will release a 5CD collection of John Lee Hooker songs that represent his wonderful and extensive career. The box will be featured within a softbound book filled with photos, words, invaluable information, and other things. The set will provide new liner notes by Hooker historian, Jas Obrecht, as well as ruminations by his longtime manager, Mike Kappus.

Musically, this set, called King Of The Boogie, will offer 100 tracks. Those songs will be some that you know well, some live material, some that are rare, and even some that have been previously unreleased (really?!).

King Of The Boogie is scheduled for September 29. Currently, there is no tracklist or cover art available.

Carole King Live Set, Tapestry: Live In Hyde Park, For CD/DVD, CD/BD Deluxe Editions

One of the most loved albums of my life is Tapestry by Carole King. It’s style, delivery, and swarm of great songs were well-received by many during its release back in 1971. In the US alone, sales were astronomical eventually pushing out over ten million copies for a coveted Diamond assignation. Since then, its songs have replayed on classic radio in the millions of times.

Throughout the years, Carole King would tour many songs off that classic album. But on July 3, 2016, she played through the entire album at England’s historic Hyde Park. Her Tapestry-attentive live set was well received by approximately 65 thousand fans. Of course, Carole King obliged with an extended set that included other Carole King gems. Nevertheless, like Leonard Cohen, Carole King holds a sort of magic about her. The new live album, Tapestry: Live In Hyde Park, lets those in attendance relive the magic, while the rest of us are able to experience it for the first time.

Tapestry: Live In Hyde Park will be released in a CD/DVD package and a CD/BD (Blu-ray) package. The date on the calendar marked for this set by Legacy Records is September 15.

[UPDATE] 3CD Deep Purple Compilation Set, A Fire In The Sky

As far as Deep Purple is concerned, one can point o several iterations of the band as heir favorite. Certainly, several MARK lineups have been well-received. The first round of the Ian Gillan years were certainly their most defining. The David Coverdale period had its share of fans as did the Tommy Bolin era. Nevertheless, Deep Purple still remains as one of the great Rock bands of the ’70s.

On September 9, Rhino Records will release a compilation of career-spanning songs called A Fire In The Sky. The planned album is to be released as a selected songs single CD, as well as a more complete collection of all-encompassing Deep Purple tracks for the 3CD Edition.

New Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) Album, Fatherland, For October

If you’re as much a fan of Bloc Party as I am, then any hint of a release is good news. To be fair, not everything they’ve released has been as entertaining as their first knock out album (Silent Alarm [2005]), but I can roll with that. Their last album, Hymns (2016) displayed a strong respect toward dance music. The first single (“The Love Within”) was musically delightful (at least to me).

On October 6, BMG Records has announced the solo album release for Bloc Party’s main singer, Kele Okereke. The new album is called Fatherland, and will contain thirteen new songs, two of them with guest singers. The two songs are “Versions Of Us” with Corinne Bailey Rae, and “Grounds For Resentment” with Olly Alexander.

Previously, Kele Okereke has released two solo albums, The Boxer (2010), and Trick (2014). Both were released under the name Kele.

Fatherland will be issued as CD, DD, and vinyl LP.
