[UPDATE] Before The Dawn With Kate Bush Information

kate-bush-befor-the-dawnSince this hotly contested post (right, Pat?), the official news has been provided that Kate Bush is, indeed, putting out Before The Dawn. It would now appear that all points of purchase will be getting physical product. Since my original post, several things have happened: 1) 3CD and 4LP sets have been announced, and 2), an date change has occurred that pushes the release date closer by a week. It is now listed as November 25 in areas outside the US. The US will get all issues (3CD, DD, 4LP) on December 2.

The 3CD set and 4LP set will come with a 24-page booklet.

Back in late summer of 2014 on through to October 1, Kate Bush performed a series of shows called Before The Dawn. The shows were spectacularly received as was expected. In fact, two dates were filmed with a potential DVD release in mind. To date, that hasn’t happened (as far as I know). Which leaves a lot of disappointed fans, both attendees and fans that were unable to attend. And here we find ourselves in the latter part of 2016.

before-the-dawn-3cd

On December 2, Concord Records will release a digital album with 29 selected performance tracks that covers three acts of the show. The show ran for 22 dates at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith. For now, there isn’t anything to indicate a DVD, BD, or even CD for the title. But this is certainly a step in the right direction, I’d say.

New Simple Minds Unplugged Set, Acoustic, Due in November

simple-minds-acousticFor a time, Simple Minds had our attention while they created some of Rock’s more resilient classics. Unfortunately, their decline began as soon as the diamond sheen on their Once Upon A Time album ceased to be of interest to the MTV crowd. Which is sad because almost every album afterwards were pure excellence. It’s those that I return to more often than even their early gems like Sparkle In the Rain. But that’s a personal preference. Their last album was the well received Big Music, issued in 2014.

For the solid and nostalgic Simple Minds fans, they have just announced an unplugged collection of their biggest tracks. The new album collection is called Acoustic and will supply acoustic versions of twelve gems (see list below). Acoustic will be released on CD, DD, and a 180g-weight vinyl edition with three extra tracks that will not be on the CD (don’t ask. I don’t know why). As for the CD, there are signed copies by Charlie (Burchill), and Jim (Kerr), limited to the first 1000 pre-orders.

Acoustic is being released on November 11 on CD and DD. The vinyl 2LP is expected on November 25, and will add in a download card for all 15 tracks found on the LPs. The new album is being preceded by a released track from the album of “Promised You A Miracle” with KT Tunstall. If you were to ask me, it’s a great recording of the song. As that, it gives me a great feeling that the album will be quite special. I’m anxious to hear the whole set.

40th Anniversary Editions of The Last Waltz In November

the-band-the-last-waltz-40thIt’s the 40th Anniversary of the concert that brought The Band to the end of their days. That concert is the much loved celebratory multi-artist send off that we all know as The Last Waltz. There is absolutely nothing that I could add that readers don’t already know about The Band. It’s no secret that The Last Waltz has been capitalized often. And with the 40th Anniversary, it will be revisited with a first time bundling of the CDs and the BD to create a complete bookshelf package.

On November 11, Rhino Records will reissue The Last Waltz in several new configurations that will include a 30-track 2CD set, and a separately available bundle of the movie on Blu-ray along with 4 CDs of available and familiar performances, some outtakes and rehearsals. In addition to those CD sets, there will be a 6LP set released, same date. The 4CDs and the 6LPs will feature 54 tracks of The Band and their guests that were invited to the departure party. All music found on all sets will be newly remastered. the booklet contained within will feature new notes and photos. The set will officially be known as the Last Waltz 40th Anniversary. The Blu-ray film will feature 5.1 Surround availability.

Yes, we’ve seen all of this material before. The mere mention of a new reissue of The Last Waltz just might elicit a groan.  Bu I’m actually anxious to put the 4CD/BD on my shelf.

New Pete Doherty Album, Hamburg Demonstrations, In December

pete-doherty-hamburg-demonstrationsThere is a long, grown-over, and often dusty pathway to Rock and Roll that Pete Doherty has traveled. Beginning with UK’s The Libertines that paired him with Carl Barât, and eventually giving him greater voice with his Babyshambles band in a later period, Pete has spent much of that time accumulating stories as well as creating a fine body of music that pays homage to the golden era of he late ’70s. After rejoining The Libertines, Pete has resorted to solo work as his personal voice needed escape.

In 2009, Pete Doherty released his last solo effort, Grace/Wastelands. After, he rejoined with The Libertines, and released another Babyshambles album. No one in Rock brings the thought of Johnny Thunders faster to my mind then Pete Doherty with his music and exploits. I’m always happy to see a new album from this guy in whatever way he chooses to provide.

On December 2, a new solo album by Pete Doherty will become available, With the date on the calendar, there is already a released single to enjoy (see below). The new album is called Hamburg Demonstrations. It is being offered in multiple configurations that include CD, DD, a Limited Edition 180g-weight vinyl LP providing a photo print of Pete, an all inclusive Super Deluxe Edition with LP, CD, and exclusive cassette edition (with photo print), an all inclusive Super Deluxe Edition LP, CD, and exclusive cassette edition (with photo print), and a hand-written lyric sheet, and an all inclusive Super Deluxe Edition with LP, CD, and exclusive cassette edition (with photo print) and signed artwork. Additionally, you can get the exclusive cassette found in the Super Deluxe Editions as a stand-alone. Go here to pre-order.

Mickey Hart’s 1991 Classic, Planet Drum, Gets 25th Anniversary Reissue

mickey-hart-planet-drum-25th-anniversaryFans of The Grateful Dead are really in a class by themselves. They celebrate all things of any facet of The Dead. And while music developed, recorded, and released by The Grateful Dead reign supreme on any meter, it goes without saying that released music from the band members are on a par not too far removed from the band itself.

Mickey Hart, one of two of the band’s original drummers (Bill Kreuzmann is the other), played with the band for two periods with only a brief hiatus between he two. Over time, Hart has released a series of albums that include Planet Drum. Planet Drum was originally released in 1991 and subsequently went on to win a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.

On December 2, UMe will reissue Planet Drum on a wide scale with planned reissues on CD, DD, and vinyl LP. The reason for this reissue is that this is the album’s 25th Anniversary. With this reissue, there will be three new tracks (“Sea Of Showers”, “Throat Games”, and “The Spot”).

As an aside, Mickey Hart, with his new affiliation with UMe/Verve, will be releasing a brand new album sometime in 2017. In addition, the catalog of Hart will be brought into the Verve household, which may result in a reissue to get the label brand on the CDs.

Steve Hillage – Searching For The Spark:1969-1991 22CD Career Box

steve-hillage-searching-for-the-sparkSteve Hillage involvement with under-appreciated Gong was creatively important for just a few years, not counting his 2k involvement periods. IT wasn’t long before Steve was no longer a part of that band, instead concentrating on his own solo career. And it was that solo career that gained him an audience wider than maybe Gong may have ever given him. During the 70s, many guitarists of popular bands were able to jump to fairly successful solo careers. They didn’t reach a mass, but that didn’t matter. They were still able to carve out a musical presence and be creatively important.

With the release of over five great studio albums including his foray into ambient music, Steve Hillage is still a recognizable name by older fans who remember the musical underground of the ’60s and ’70s.

On October 21, Madfish Music will release a 22CD Box that will explore the career of Steve Hillage in a wonderful way. With all of his Virgin Records sets, all of the bonus music in concert performances, demos, alternates, and outtakes, and all of his band involvements, this Box covers quite a bit of ground. The set is being called Searching For The Spark: 1969-1991.

Searching For The Spark: 1969-1991 will create a perfect bubble of great music. Within you will find (cut’n paste job…sorry):

* Arzachel.

* Khan’s Space Shanty, 1972.

* All eight of Hillage’s classic Virgin Records solo albums – Fish Rising, L, Motivation Radio, Green, Live Herald, Rainbow Dome Music, Open (and Studio Herald), For To Next (and its companion And Not Or) – plus bonus tracks.

* System 7’s debut from 1991.

* Live in Deeply Vale, 1978.

* Two BBC performances from The Paris Theatre recorded in December 1976 and November 1979.

* Eight CDs featuring recordings taken from Steve’s personal archive, including four superb concert performances (Brighton Dome November 1977, Munich April 1979, Hammersmith Odeon November 1979, The Steve Hillage Band Live At The Gong Family Unconvention 2006) and four discs (Sparks Volumes 1-4) packed with previously unheard and unreleased tracks, demos and alternate takes.

The set will include a massive 188-page (!) book. The book will contain hundreds of photos, and enough writing to keep you immersed in Steve Hillage for the foreseeable future. more physical printed bonuses will include three reproductions of promo posters, two lyric books, a “high-quality” enamel badge (?), a 60-page scrapbook, and a certificate of authenticity signed by Steve Hillage, obviously to guarantee the value of the package for the future.

Searching For The Spark: 1969-1991 is in limited production with only 2500 sets available. In one, there is a Golden Ticket that will entitle the finder to a personalized special gift from Steve Hillage.

Before The Dawn With Kate Bush To Get Digital Audio Release In December

kate-bush-befor-the-dawnBack in late summer of 2014 on through to October 1, Kate Bush performed a series of shows called Before The Dawn.

[UPDATE] 6CD/1DVD Box For Graham Parker, These Dreams Will Never Sleep: The Best Of Graham Parker 1976-2015

These Dreams Will Never Sleep GP Box CoverRock in the late ’70s and into the early ’80s was an incredible phenomena. It was growing up so fast, we barely had time to get it all into our systems. Part of that magic was Graham Parker & The Rumour. From his debut in 1976 of Howlin’ Wind to his peak set, The Up Escalator in 1980 through his last album, Mystery Glue in 2015, Graham Parker has delivered a varied collection of great albums, 22 of them in all. Seven of them were with The Rumour, one with The Shot, and one with The Figgs. The rest were solo offerings. Consistently released, Graham Parker has covered a lot of years, and a lot of musical ground in his catalog.

On September 30, Universal UK will release a 6CD/1DVD career spanning Box called These Dreams Will Never Sleep: The Best Of Graham Parker 1976-2015 that will provide three anthology CDs, a CD with BBC sessions, and a 2CD set that contains the entire show of Graham Parker & The Rumour’s last set in 2015 that supported Mystery Glue. This live show is previously unreleased.

The DVD adds a collection of performances from Top Of The Pops, and The Old Grey Whistle Test from the ’70s, and an unreleased live concert with The Rumour at The Brook in Southampton (UK). As if these inclusions weren’t enough, a 36-page hardcover book is included filled with photos and notes, an essay, and a new interview with Graham Parker. To make the set even more attractive, a poster, and three postcards will complete the essential Box set.

As of now, there isn’t a track-list available. But when one is displayed, I’ll update this page with it.

kinks-the-mono-collectionIf you’ve come back to vinyl, and find yourself recollecting all those classics that have aged or disappeared over the decades, then it’s likely that short jump over to the newly released vinyl sets is an easy hop. Especially when you can get amazing new access to music that may never have been released or have long been out of print.

On November 18, a new vinyl LP Box is coming out that collects the first eight Kinks classics, and presenting them in original Mono. the new Box is being called The Mono Collection and will gather together The Kinks (1964), Kinda Kinks (1965), The Kink Kontroversy (1965), Face To Face (1966), Something Else by The Kinks (1967), The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (1968), Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire (1968), and will also include Live At Kelvin Hall (1967), and a 2LP The Kinks comp set, The Kinks (or Black Album) (1970).

New Martha Wainwright Album, Goodnight City, Scheduled For November

martha-wainwright-goodnight-cityI’ve always enjoyed the work of Martha Wainwright. She does come from a deeply talented family that includes her father, Loudon Wainwright III, her mother, Kate McGarrigle (of Kate & Anna McGarrigle recording duo), who died of cancer in 2010, and her brother, Rufus Wainwright. She released her first solo album in 1997 called Ground Floor. It was released as a cassette only issue. Her first major label release was with Rounder Records’ explorative sub-label, Zoë Records. It was a cathartic self-titled release that showed success that was further seen in her equally cleansing, if not angrier, 2nd release, I Know You’re Married But I’ve got Feelings Too, back in 2008.

In 2012, Martha Wainwright switched labels ending up on V2 Records with Come Home To Mama. Martha does not simply release albums. She takes her sweet time in producing a very good experience. I can personally recommend her folk-styled rock songs to you. I’ve enjoyed each one (except for Ground Floor, which I didn’t know existed until writing this piece).

On November 11, Martha Wainwright, keeping with her lengthy 3+ years between releases, will issue her latest album, Goodnight City. The new album is being released by Pias America. Goodnight City will contain twelve new songs, half of which are originals. The other half are songs contributed by Glen Hansard, Beth Orton, her brother, Rufus, and a few others.

I’m excited!
