Three ’90s Bowie Sets To Be Re-Released

Rhino and Parlophone will be dipping into the catalog of David Bowie to re-release three ’90s titles. I don’t see anything with special additions. I believe these will be a reintroduction of several titles into the marketplace.

The three titles involved are Hours, Earthling, and 1. Outside. 1. Outside is David Bowie’s 19th studio effort and his first back with Brian Eno since the Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, Lodger) and contains the hits, “The Hearts Filthy Lesson”, “Hllo Spaceboy”, “Strangers When We Meet”, and “I’m Deranged”. 1. Outside was released in 1995, while Earthling, and Hours were released in 1997, and 1999 respectively.

All three titles are on the calendar for July 8.

Four Pink Floyd Titles To Get Re-Released

Pink Floyd Delicate Sound Of ThunderWith all of the Pink Floyd attention that we’ve had over the last few years, it’s no surprise that other titles that flew under the radar would be released soon. Now that we’re getting quality reissues of new vinyl LPs, it’s time to turn to the other titles that have gotten little love or thought.

On June 17, Columbia Records, with the help of Legacy Recordings, will reissue four titles that include a live set (Delicate Sound Of Thunder, 1988), and three collections that include Relics (1971), A Foot In The Door: The Best Of Pink Floyd (2011), and Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd (2001).

There doesn’t appear to be anything special here other than their re-release to reintroduce the titles to the marketplace, possibly to take advantage of increased awareness. If you don’t have any of these, now would be the time to grab a copy of one or the other, or all of them.

Two King Crimson Steven Wilson Remixes Cometh (Beat, Three Of A Perfect Pair)…And A KC Box!

King Crimson BeatIt’s a post that many of us have been anxiously awaiting for. The announced arrivals of the Steve Wilson Stereo and 5.1 remixes of two Adrian Belew-period King Crimson classics, Beat (1982), and Three Of A Perfect Pair (1984).

Those two have been completed by Steve Wilson for some time just awaiting the decision to release by DGM. Yesterday, DGM went on record as saying that these two will arrive during October of 2016. No date has been set as of yet other than October. What’s worse, we don’t know (yet), other than the original album, what the other content is going to be.

What we do know additionally is that DGM will also be releasing a new King Crimson Box, On And Off The Road  1981-1984. Both Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair – with the entire content of both packages – will be included in the Box, as likely, Discipline (1981) will be (I’m assuming).

The content of all three packages (Beat/Three Of A Perfect Pair/On And Off The Road 1981-1984) will be revealed in a few weeks by DGM.

Be patient. I will update when I get notice!

Emerson, Lake & Palmer Gets Reissues and 3CD Anthology In July

ELPLate last year, the news that Emerson. Lake & Palmer has signed the global rights to their complete catalog over to Germany’s BMG label was announced along with the promise to reissue the first seven albums from that grand catalog. Well, that promise is about to come true.

On July 29, BMG will reissue the first three ELP albums (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Tarkus, Pictures At An Exhibition), as well as a massive 3CD career-spanning collection, Emerson, Lake & Palmer – The Anthology.

The first two albums (Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Tarkus)will be reissued as 2CD sets that will include (as I understand it) the 2012 Steven Wilson remasters and remixes of each set. If you have already attained earlier reissues of these, then these may not be all that exciting for you.  Still, keeping the band in the light as they have managed to be kept since their Shout! Factory reissues, to me, is a good thing. Pictures At An Exhibition, however, will be reissued with a new 2016 remaster of the original album, plus add in the bonus track of the five-part “Pictures At An Exhibition” as performed at the Mar Y Sol Festival in Puerto Rico on December 4, 1972. The second CD will offer a fifteen-track Live set, Live At the Lyceum Theatre, London, December 9, 1970.

What is most of interest to me is the 3CD Anthology package. It’s is expected to contain 39 tracks and to be cased in a specially designed book-styled housing. This will present new liner notes, more photographs, and potentially other good things.

BMG will reissue Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never End…Ladies And Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer later in 2016.

Yes, it’s true that the catalog featuring the great albums of ELP have already been remastered and reissued extensively. But you still have the power of choice.

The 1978 CAN Album by Can To Be Re-Released On CD

Can CANCAN, the eponymous eleventh studio album by the innovative German band, Can, was first released in Germany in 1978, vinyl LP, of course. It’s a brilliant album for anyone with a mind for stylistic music that extends much further than Pop, or even many Rock and Alternative releases. The album, with its eight tracks is a heady trip into yourself. One that you could just lay back with and let wash over you. Therapeutic even, if you want to go that far.

CAN (also known as Inner Space) has a distinct jazz feel to it, with its prog-like exploration of melodies throughout. The Jazz is a fusion style that satisfies immensely. It’s already released on just about any format you can imagine from the time of its original release through the SACD reissue of the set.

CAN will be reissued via Mute Records as a standard CD re-release. The mastering is taken from the SACD DSD project tapes released in 2006. The booklet replicates the SACD inclusion. Regardless, it’s coming out again on CD. This is good news for those that haven’t a copy of the hard to locate (at a decent price) album but want one. A vinyl LP version was released via Mute Records back in the latter part of 2014.

Watch for the CD release of CAN on July 22.

Review: Strangers – Marissa Nadler (too good to ignore)

Marissa Nadler StrangersMarissa Nadler is not one for the usual stream of Pop. Rather, she uses a strong sense of melancholy to permeate all of her songs. That usually isn’t the way that the general mainstream-driven audience travels, although they respond well to it. And that makes the extraordinary Bella Union/Sacred Bones artist a special one for that.

With a haunting voice, and her penchant for the lush, magically-fused instrumentation that easily reverberates her sense of sadness and loneliness, Marissa Nadler can absolutely be considered a modern master of her craft. With her newest album, Strangers, released in May (2016), Marissa perfects her style, making her newest songs even more a ripping fabric of the soul than her previous efforts. And that’s a talent becoming better because I could not (ever) imagine anything more heart-rending than her beautiful and gorgeous “Drive” from her July album (2014). With a display of eerie pedal steel, and her dream-soundtrack lyrics, “Drive” is a song that will never leave your soul. Never. Then there’s the stunning softness of “Dead City Emily” with its train whistle instrumentation, also from July.

Tripping back to The Sister (2012), where the music is much more spare, the ghost of Nadler’s sadness is clearly evident. That ghost was reshaped in July, and has become even more memorable in Strangers. The lead-off single for Strangers was “All The Colors Of The Dark”, a track that transitions her from July to Strangers quite well.

Marissa Nadler BW

Strangers has eleven tracks (12 in the bonus edition). All of them are engaging, which makes a trip through the full album a desirable one. The inherently sad Country feel, along with an evident Cocteau Twins hint, creates a new drug to enjoy in those full sittings. Yes, I have favorite tracks. Who doesn’t of any album. But Strangers is captivating in its entirety, every song. The same can be said of July. I recommend both!

I don’t know where Marissa Nadler got her exquisite talent for introspection but it’s a gripping one. It may never let you go.

She is my Laura Nyro in this time!

“…nothing like the way it feels, nothing like the way it feels to drive. Still remember all the words, to every song you ever heard, drive…”
–“Drive”

[UPDATE] 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Of Ramones Debut

Ramones RamonesWell over a month earlier, I mentioned the upcoming 40th Anniversary of the great 1976 debut from Ramones. Since the release of that album, the era of punk was ushered in completely. After that magnificent eponymous debut album, Ramones achieved a legendary status revered to this day. MusicTAP mentioned that the album would be released on July 1 as a 3CD/1LP Collector’s Edition. That date has since shifted to July 29. To be sure, the set is pricey. But it contains an extraordinary amount of historical tracks to make the purchase a worthy one if you’re a Ramones fan through and through.

The 3CD/1LP set will offer a 2016 remaster of the classic fourteen-track masterpiece. The first CD will offer not only the 2016 Sereo remaster, but will also tack on the entire album in a new MONO mix. In addition to that, the two extra CDs will provide eighteen demos, outtakes, and single edit mixes, while the third CD will contain the two legendary Roxy sets from Hollywood on August 12, 1976. The second set is a previously unreleased live set. both live sets have been newly remastered. Each set features the exact same set list.

More surprising is the 180g-weight LP. It will actually contain the new MONO version of Ramones as opposed to an expected Stereo issue. That separates the set from being more than just a standard Super Deluxe Edition release.

The 3 CDs and LP are contained inside a 12″ x 12″ hardcover book. The book will present photographs that have been previously unseen. They are presented by the album’s original photographer, Roberta Bayley. The book is rounded out by notes, an essay, and other cool Ramones things. The album has been remastered by the album’s original producer, Craig Leon.

Most importantly, the box is a limited release with only 19,760 numbered sets being manufactured. (Clever, the number amount.)

Possible New Steven Wilson Remixed Gentle Giant Album Later This Year?

Just a quick pop into this dream state with a bit of potential news. Over at the Gentle Giant FB page, a photo is posted with the cryptic notation of “Thinking about a new Steven Wilson remix this year!!” Whether that means that one is in the works, or that one will be released (as many of Steven Wilson’s remixes have been finished for years before being released. Roxy Music debut is one that is finished by not released (done in 2012). Others include Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair from the Adrian Belew period of King Crimson (finished “a long time ago”), and Seeds of Love by Tears For Fears (possibly finished by now).

As of today, only Octopus, and The Power And The Glory have been remixed. With the new post, we have a speculation that one is bieng released later this year. We know that the multi-tape masters for In A Glass House have not been located. It’s one that Wilson has been keen on remixing. But there are others so, while we wouldn’t know which title is being referred to, all we can do is wait for news of a more concrete nature.

Nevertheless, this bit of “noise” is definitely welcomed! We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more news.
