Two Peter Baumann Classics TO Get CD Reissues

A while back, we mentioned that two Peter Baumann classics, Romance ’76, and Trans Harmonic Nights were getting new remasters and being released as digital only downloads (read that here).  The DD reissue actually precedes the CD reissues by having been released on February 19 via virgin Records in the US. Today, I find that while those digital downloads are definitely worthy, there will now be physical CD reissues as well. Now this is superior news.

Peter Baumann Romance 76

Peter Baumann, for those that may not know, is one of the chief architects of the popular Virgin Records era Tangerine Dream. His involvement led to Rubycon, Phaedra, Stratosfear, and more.

The news is this:

Esoteric Recordings (via their Reactive imprint) will reissue these two early Peter Baumann gems on May 27.  Both sets will be newly remastered , with restoration of the original artwork, and a new booklet with a new essay included. There will be no bonus tracks. That’s OK with me because these two early era Baumann classics have been unavailable on CD for well over two decades.

Peter Baumann Trans Harmonic Nights

Romance ’76 was released originally in 1976, while Trans Harmonic Nights was released in 1979.

It’s also important to remind Peter Baumann fans that his brand new album, Machines Of Desire, will be released on May 20. You can read about that release here.

Review: IV – Black Mountain

Black Mountain IVClassic is the term you’re going to get from me when I wax favorably over IV. As you may know (or not), IV is the new album from Black Mountain.

Black Mountain has a charged recording history with excellent music that remembers and celebrates the music of the past era of Rock and Roll, namely the late ’60s, very early ’70s. These aren’t cover tunes. They’re originals that could easily have given any of the bands from that time frame a fit as Black Mountain would have challenged those genuises with potential high charters. There’s not a doubt in my mind that Black Mountain would have led the pack. They certainly do now.

However, in this day and age, the many of us time-displaced “ancients” are warmly receiving of the music of such a band. Black Mountain sounds like the psychedelic Rock that thrived. But there is a hint of several other bands including Black Sabbath, and Jefferson Airplane. Unmatched at vocals is the lovely and talented Amber Webber, whose shimmery vocals highlight everywhere she appears. The guitars are heavy, the drums and bass sure-footed, and the keyboards a strong display of classic Rock and Roll.

Black Mountain

IV contains ten new tracks, three of which exceed the 8-minute mark (YAY!). Those belong to the already released “Mothers Of The Sun: (see video below), “(Over And Over) The Chain”, and the album closer, “Space To Bakersfield”. The rest are still heft in time span with the least consuming is “Florian Saucer Attack”. In short, IV is a genuine classic that will sit well with their other classics, In The Future (2008), and Black Mountain (2005). And yes, I do love their Wilderness Heart from 2010. It just seems to fare less well than the other three. But that’s just me.

My suggestion is to waste little to no time to jump on this band’s wagon. With Amber Webber a part of the music, it just makes it all the more wondrous an experience. I just hope we don’t have to wait another six years before we get another Black Mountain release.

Two Barclay James Harvest Titles Get Massive 2CD/1DVD Reissue

Esoteric is a UK-based reissue label that not only creates fine reissues, but goes above and beyond by delivering a more than definitive remembrance of a favorite band. And they do this time and again without flaw and imperfection. The good news for this post is that Esoteric is doing this magic for two classic Barclay James Harvest titles. They are Gone To Earth (1977), and Everyone Is Everybody Else (1974). Read on!

Briefly, Barclay James Harvest formed in the late ’60s as an ArtRock band that was starting to gain popularity as an art form Rock and Roll expression. With other bands gaining in popularity by the use of ArtRock, it certainly made great sense. Their first album was the self-titled release from 1970. The band has well over fifteen releases including from another iteration of the band.

One of their great albums is Everyone Is Everybody Else. This album, their fifth, was released in 1974. It was followed by Time Honoured Ghosts in 1975, Octoberon in 1976, and Gone To Earth in 1977. While there were more great BJH albums, it is with Everyone Is Everybody Else, and Gone To Earth that we’re most interested in simply because these are the albums Esoteric is reissuing.

On June 10, there will be 2CD/1DVD explorations of both mentioned albums available to fans. Both sets will be fully remastered and expanded. Not only will there be additional material but there will also be new Stereo and 5.1 Surround tracks provided on the DVD add. (See track-listings for individual layouts.) A lavish booklet will accompany the sets filled with information, liner notes, restored art, memorabilia, and photos. Both packages will be housed in digipak sets.

Everyone Is Everybody Else will be reissued with seven bonus tracks, as will be Gone To Earth.

New Mudcrutch Album, 2, In May

Mudcrutch 2So many years ago, Tom Petty had a band that went by the name of Mudcrutch. Formed with Tom Leadon (brother of Eagles’ Bernie Leadon) back in 1970, Mudcrutch was the embryonic band that eventually led to Petty’s formation of The Heartbreakers. Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench were the sole acquisitions of that original Petty start-up.

In 2008, Tom Petty needed a return to roots and reformed the band to release a genuine Mudcrutch album, The album was followed by a small EP of live music from that revitalized lineup. Since then, we have heard nothing about Mudcrutch musicially. But that soon changes.

On May 20, Reprise Records will release Petty’s reformed Mudcrutch’s new album. The eleven track album will be simply titled 2. Mudcrutch has planned and booked 16 support dates at smaller venues beginning on May 26 at Ogden Theater in Denver, CO, and ending on June 28 at Santa Ana/Costa Mesa’s Observatory theater (my old grounds).

2 will be made available on CD, DD, and 180g-weight vinyl LP. At the Mudcrutch website, there are bundles that include tee apparel. For Record Store Day, there will be a 7″ single of “Trailer” made exclusively available (hear track below).

Machine Head (Deep Purple) Gets 2CD Package Break Out From Massive 2012 Box

Deep Purple Machine Head 40thDeep Purple is easily one of the big Rock bands that has fixed references in one’s mind (if you lived in the ’70s). Their “Smoke On The Water” song is a chord set that many newcomers to the guitar attempt to play. With several big Mark lineups, including the unforgettable Mark II that generated their best sellers, Deep Purple has quite a legacy attached to them. At one time, they were listed in the Book of World Records as being the world’s loudest band in concert.

Machine Head, the band’s sixth studio effort featured the classic line-up of Paice, Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, and Lord. That lineup produced two albums prior to Machine Head (which was released in 1972). Those albums were In Rock (1970), and Fireball (1971). Machine Head was followed up with the last of the peak Mark II lineup album, Who Do We Think We Are? (1973).

On May 20, Rhino Records will pare the 2012 Deluxe 40th Anniversary Edition Box of Machine Head down to 2CD as opposed to the 5Disc set. For those that balked at the hefty edition, or refused to pay that much money to acquire it, or for whatever reasons you had to ignore the massive reissue that was that Box, there is this chance to acquire the core of the box. After all, unless you’re a die-hard fan, there’s not an actual need to pay huge sums for a set you won’t listen to much of outside the actual album.

I’m sure the booklet will be truncated from its original 64-page size, and the second disc may contain the album remix. But I’m not completely sure.

For your information.

New Rival Sons Album, Hollow Bones, Set For June

Rival Sons Hollow BonesIf you’ve heard of Rival Sons, perhaps even love them, then you understand why they were picked to open for Black Sabbath, worldwide, on Black Sabbath’s ‘ending it all’ farewell tour. Rival Sons have a professional blend of Rock and Roll that is as satisfying as it gets. They were just born in the wrong time. If they were active in the ’70s, they’d be a heavy dose of pleasant nostalgia right now. They are good!

On the heels of their 2014 album, Great Western Valkyrie, Rival Sons (who hail from Long Beach, CA) will be releasing their newest album, Hollow Bones. And if its as good as their previous efforts (Before The Fire – 2009, EP – 2011, Pressure and Time – 2011, Head Down – 2012, Great Western Valkyrie – 2014), then we’re in for some Rock and Roll treat.

On June 10, Rival Sons will release Hollow Bones with nine tracks. The new album will be issued on CD, vinyl LP, and the usual distribution via DD.

Hollow Bones – Rival Sons

01 – Hollow Bones Pt 1
02 – Tied Up
03 – Thundering Voices
04 – Baby Boy
05 – Pretty Face
06 – Fade Out
07 – Black Coffee
08 – Hollow Bones Pt 2
09 – All That I Want

New Jean-Michel Jarre Electronica Addition Expected In May

Jean Michel Jarre Electronica 2Electronica (The Time Machine) was released by Jean-Michel Jarre back in 2015. It featured an ingenious match-up of collaborative music with other pioneering electronic-based bands and artists to create a stunning set of great music. It delivered on sets with Tangerine Dream, Lang Lang, Pete Townshend, Massive Attack, Laurie Anderson, and more. I’m quite pleased to find that Jean-Michel Jarre will revisit the concept once again with a new Electronica issue.

On May 6, the next release in his Electronica series, Electronica 2 (The Heart Of Noise). It will feature eighteen new tracks, most as collaborative work with the likes of Jeff Mills, Pet Shop Boys, Hans Zimmer, Gary Numan, The Orb, Primal Scream, and others. There will be three tracks that have Jarre only. With the first set so refreshing, I’m immensely excited for this next release.

Reissue of A Foreigner Ballads Collection in April

Foreigner I Want To Know What Love IsThere were many reasons to love Foreigner as a band. They seemed to hit all cylinders during their high-powered run over six best-selling albums (not counting the Lou Gramm-less years) from their 1977 eponymous debut though their Inside Information, released in 1987. Throughout all of that, they released over fourteen solid Top 20 hits (more if you count their lesser performers that cracked the Top40). Many of those songs were effective ballads. Some of those ballads, like “I Want To Know What Love Is”, are timeless. And you didn’t even have to be a big fan to appreciate them.

On April 29, Razor & Tie will release the US issue of a previous UK import title, I Want To Know What Love Is: The Ballads. This collected set of tracks from Foreigner highlight their more softer tunes.

01. I Want to Know What Love Is
02. In Pieces
03. Waiting for a Girl Like You
04. When It Comes to Love
05. Feels Like the First Time
06. Say You Will
07. The Flame Still Burns
08. Save Me
09. I Can’t Give Up
10. Fool for You Anyway
11. As Long As I Live /
12. I’ll Be Home Tonight
13. Double Vision
14. Long, Long Way from Home

The UK version is a 2CD set that adds in an acoustic show.

Just thought you’d like to know.
