The First Two Albums By The Move To Be Reissued In Multi-Disc Sets, Expanded and Remastered (UK)

The Move, while a popular UK band, is best known as the precursor to the arrival of Electric Light Orchestra. Within its ranks, The Move incubated Roy Wood, Bev Bevan, and even – for a short period – Jeff Lynne. It wasn’t long after the arrival of Jeff Lynne that the idea of bringing together a Pop/Rock style with classical overtones (unlike Yes, or The Moody Blues) formulated by Roy Wood, would be put into motion in the form of a crafty indicator moniker of Electric Light Orchestra and a fleshed out band that included The Move’s drummer, Bev Bevan. Where ELO went from there is easily known history. What is not as well known outside the sphere of serious ELO fans is the Move.

The Move enjoyed a short but engaging history with its UK fans. Assembled in the mid-’60s, The Move, under the guidance of the immensely talented Roy Wood, enjoyed success with the issue of its self-titled debut (1968). Not long after, the band released their sophomore album, Shazam (1970). Both albums are classic documents of a band that was as impressive as anything being released at the time.

In celebration of both those gems, UK reissue label, Esoteric Records, will release two multi-disc Remastered and Expanded of both titles.

The Move will be reissued in a 3CD Deluxe set (track list outside the original songs not available as of yet). The followup album, Shazam, will be reissued on a 2CD Deluxe set. Both sets will be housed in a digipak package. Both sets are planned for reissue on April 29 in the UK.

New Corinne Bailey Rae Album, The Heart Speaks In Whispers, In May

Corinne Bailey Rae The Heart Speaks In WhispersThe last time we heard from British singer-songwriter, Corinne Bailey Rae, it was with her beautiful and poignant 2010 album, The Sea. That album revealed further a deep beauty in songcraft with its eleven haunting crossover tracks, three of which were successful singles. But she didn’t start her career with The Sea. Her career began with the release of her self-titled debut in 2006. even then, it took her four years to release The Sea, largely due to the death of her husband prior to the issue of the album. To date, the debut has sold over four million copies of the set.

On May 13, Virgin Records will release the third new album from the UK singer. The album is being called The Heart Speaks In Whispers. It will contain 12 new tracks, one of which can be heard below in the embedded new video from the singer.

The new album will be made available on standard CD, a Deluxe Edition CD (with four additional tracks), vinyl 2LP, and DD. If you were to go to the webshop for Corinne Bailey Rae (here), there are bundles being made available with exclusive tees, and signed editions of the new albums. A few of the bundles will include a limited edition 7″ of the single, “Been To the Moon” as well as a signed postcard set.

The new track, “Been To The Moon” is a classic Corinne Bailey Rae gem with a jazz undertone.

The Ambient Series: Peter Baumann Returns With Machines Of Desire

Peter Baumann Machines Of DesirePeter Baumann left Tangerine Dream back in the late ’70s to do other things. He started a label (Private Music), and did other things to bring more meaning to a very short life span. There were several excellent solo works after the 1971-1977 period with Tangerine Dream, a period that created several enduring classics including Stratosfear.

In early 2015, Peter Baumann approached Edgar Froese with the idea of a classic reunion. Unfortunately, Edgar Froese passed away before anything could come to fruition over the desire to rejoin. It’s obvious that Peter Baumann had some incredible music ideas in his head. Well, needless to say that we didn’t get that. But what we’re getting is quite a treat in and of itself.

Peter_Baumann_Credit_BureauBOn May 20, Peter Baumann will release an eight-track album of brand new compositions, one of which you can hear below! The new album is being called Machines Of Desire and will be released via Bureau B Records. When you hear the track below, you’ll immediately be enticed by its incredible familiarity.

Peter Baumann had this to say about the influence that helped create Machines of Desire:

“The title, Machines of Desire, reflects my belief that as human beings we’re driven relentlessly by our deepest desires: the desire to experience life and love, to be heard and seen, to connect with others, to be safe, to find meaning and purpose… and countless more. We find ourselves in the drama of everyday life with uncertainty at every step, with fear of loss and existential loneliness, and only occasionally interrupted by the fundamental joy of being alive.”

Machines of Desire – Peter Baumann
Tracklist:

01 – The Blue Dream 5:53
02 – Searching in Vain 5:37
03 – Valley of the Gods 4:13
04 – Echoes in the Cave 3:55
05 – Ordinary Wonder 6:00
06 – Crossing the Abyss 5:58
07 – Dancing in the Dark 4:57
08 – Dust to Dust 6:24

Machines Of Desire will be released on CD, vinyl LP (with bonus CD included), and as DD. That’s quite a nice piece of news for today, I’d say!

So Alone, 1978 Classic By Johnny Thunders Gets 2LP Vinyl Reissue

Johnny Thunders So AloneIf you were a New York Dolls fan back in the ’70s, then following the band mates as they went on to their next destinations was simply a no-brainer. The most exciting of them was easily Johnny Thunders. His formation of The Heartbreakers as a punk unit heading into the murky and dangerous undertow of that emerging music was the most exciting in New York. New York fostered its own brand of underground music that eventually gave us Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, Ramones, Lou Reed, and many other lesser known (but well loved by followers of that scene) bands like Wayne County/Jayne County, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Dead Boys, Dictators, Fleshtones, etc.

One of those, Johnny Thunders, helped bridged a gap between the Rock refugees from the early ’70s, and the emerging Punk lovers. His first efforts were with The Heartbreakers. By 1977, they released L.A.M.F., which went on to achieve a legendary fame. However, as Rock and Roll will have it, the members eventually were in constant dispute over the production values of the only studio album that band produced. It led to the early demise of what would have been a fine, fine band. As a result, Johnny Thunders opted to go solo. His first album was So Alone, released in 1978.

So Alone was an instant classic that remains such even to this day. With equal parts punk, rock, and other styles including a love nod to the past with a potent cover of “Pipeline”, the 1960 surf gem from The Chantays. So Alone provided a strong set of ten tracks, all of which stand alone so well, they could have been singles! Other covers on the album include “Daddy Rollin’ Stone” (Otis Blackwell), a stunning rockin’ jazzy rework of “(Give Him A) Great Big Kiss”, original by The Shangri-Las (on So Alone as “Great Big Kiss”), and a rework of New York Dolls’ “Subway Train”.

Johnny Thunders was joined in the studio by Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy), Steve Marriott (Small Faces, Humble Pie), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), and others. So Alone was produced by Steve Lillywhite, himself a powerhouse name as a producer at the time. You can hear Phil Lynott singing the second verse of “Daddy Rollin’ Stone”, followed in the third verse by an unmistakable Steve Marriott.

Needless to say, So Alone is a classic that needs to be heard. Even if you decide that you dislike it, it needs to be heard at least once.

On March 4, Remarquable Records will release a newly remastered 2LP vinyl edition of So Alone. Unique to this Special Edition vinyl set is the inclusion of five bonus tracks. Those are “Dead Or Alive”, a single recorded and released as the first Thunders solo track, which was backed with album cut, “Downtown”; the 7″ single version of “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory”, along with it’s B-side track, “Hurtin'”; the unreleased title track, “So Alone”, and an intended but unreleased b-side, “The Wizard”, a cover of T. Rex’s Marc Bolan song. “The Wizard” was meant to be the B-side of “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory” until replaced by “Hurtin'”. The album features remastering at a high quality 24bit/96kHz from an original source.

To add to the set, a desirable 16-page booklet will be included. It will contain every promotional memorabilia issued to promote So Alone during the time of its release.

So Alone stands as a vastly underrated gem in the world of remembered classics.

You can hear every song plus some of the extras here by playing the embedded video below. Highly suggested!

Martin Turner Repackages The Life Begins Tour As All-Inclusive 2CD/DVD Set

Martin Turner Life Begins Tour 2CDDVDDespite the unsettled differences between the Andy Powell and Martin Turner,  (note: I love both musicians and their current directions), both make a solid stand to be where they are. Wishbone Ash, led by Andy Powell, continues a forward evolution of the band, while Martin Turner does a nostalgia-based celebration of the music of Wishbone Ash past. Neither should be vilified for their directions. The remaining members are content to be on the outside enjoying well-deserved retirements (in the cases of Ted Turner, and Steve Upton), or continuing on as a musical contributor (as with Laurie Wisefield). And now that that’s out of the way, I have this piece of music news related to the music of Wishbone Ash past.

In 2010, Martin Turner celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Wishbone Ash by doing an extended tour of nostalgia with the entirety of Argus being played, as well as a generous helping of classic Wishbone Ash songs. Martin Turner allowed the release of their March 13, 2010 show at the Y Theatre in Leicester, England. The concert was filmed in its entirety for the DVD, which released in 2011. The CDs and the DVD have since sold at shows primarily.

On April 8, the 2CDs and DVD of The Life Begins Tour will be repackaged as a combined set for the first time. The package will give fans a chance to hear and to see the 2010 show in its entirety. Fans of Martin Turner will feel a wave of nostalgia as his band runs through familiar classics (see track list below).

(Note: I am a non-combative fan of Wishbone Ash who rightly sees the situation as it should be viewed. Andy Powell has kept Wishbone Ash going throughout these many decades with new music. That is rightfully his right. Martin Turner, until recently, has performed from a nostalgic angle. I LOVE both of these guys and the creativity they have provided collectively to fans in the past. I continue to enjoy what BOTH do without ill will to either party. I RESPECT what both do and the directions they travel.)

2CD Collection Of The Thompson Twins From UK For April

The Very Best Of The Thompson TwinsIf you were an avid fan of late ’70s, early ‘8os Rock – y’know, the MTV era – then you most definitely hear of The Thompson Twins. This band was primarily made up of original founder, Tom Bailey, and later shored up by Alannah Currie, and Joe Leeway during their successful run of New Wave hits in the ’80s. They were responsible for an impressive string of infectious tunes that had an ability to hang out with your mind’s radio for quite a time.

Unfortunately, as will happen with many bands, the toll on them tended to separate them. Eventually, The Thompson Twins were no more. But if you were a fan, they still have the same replay value that many bands of that eclectic time period still have.

On April 8, a UK label by the name of Metro Select will release 2CD collection of Greatest Hits as well as a selection of bonus tracks, 12″ dance tracks and remixes (see list below) featuring the collected output of the band in its several variations. The collection will be called Hold Me Now – The Very Best Of The Thompson Twins.

There is no word on whether the music is remastered. for US fans, this title will be an import.

Judas Priest Battle CryJudas Priest has had a wildly successful career. Since the release of their first album, Rocka Rolla in 1974, they have steadily captured attention as the years passed. After only two albums (Rocka Rolla, Sad Wings of Destiny – 1976), the band signed a long-running deal with Columbia Records which exists to this day. Kill ‘Em All by Metallica To Be Remastered And Expanded

Metallica Kill Em AllJust a few hours ago, I posted on the upcoming availability of a Deluxe Boxed set for Ride The Lightning, the 1984 Metallica classic. But now it’s not just Ride The Lightning that is getting the immense workover, it’s also Kill ‘Em All, their 1983 debut.

The update for Kill ‘Em All will provide not only the brand new remaster of the audio, but will issue a grand collection of album related goodies that will encompass 4LPs, 5CDs, and a DVD. Like the Ride The Lightning update, Kill ‘Em All will provide a hard bound book, as well as a mini book for lyrics, and a poster set.

The CDs offer the original album, a previously unreleased set of interviews and radio spots related to the album, a third CD filled with rough mixes from the sessions and the Whiplash remix EP, a CD with a previously unreleased live set from J Bees Rock III in Middletown, NY in 1984, and the fifth CD with a previously unreleased live set from The Keystone in Palo Alto, CA in 1983.

The LPs provide the original album on one LP, a previously unreleased live performance from Espace Balard in Paris, France from 1984, spread out over 2LPs, and a 3-track picture disc (one studio, 2 live) titled Jump In The Fire.

The DVD presents the mostly unreleased live set from The Metro in Chicago in 1983.

Kill ‘Em All, the classic debut by Metallica, will be reissued in the Deluxe Edition 4LP/5CD/DVD Box, as well as original title on LP, and original title on CD. It’s scheduled on the same date as Ride The Lightning.

13CD Foghat Complete Bearsville Albums Collection In April

Foghat The Complete Bearsville Albums Collection 13CDIf you were a Savoy Brown fan, and were fortunate to enjoy the lineup that contained “Lonesome” Dave Peverett, Tone Stevens, and Roger Earl, then it wasn’t long before you began to enjoy the power and grace of an upstart Blues/Rock band by the unlikely name of Foghat. Foghat is the band that the three bandmates formed after leaving Kim Simmonds’ great band. Their first album featured a strong cover of Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline”, and their unmatched electric cover of Willie Dixon’s timeless “I Just Want To Make Love To You”.

By the time their reached their second album, the picture-titled Rock and Roll, they were on a row towards their inevitable fame. They managed a strong eight year run that peaked with their Live album from 1977.

On April 15, Bearsville Records will present a 13CD Boxed set of all their label issues of Foghat albums. This starts at their 1972 self-titled debut and finishes with Zig Zag Walk from 1983. The original band released a phenomenal album eleven years later called Return Of The Boogie Men. (If you do not have or heard this album, you should hunt it down as it’s a worthy slot to the other Foghat material.

The 13CD Foghat Box is being called The Complete Bearsville Albums Collection and will feature completely new 2016 remastering to freshen the audio up. Compelling enough? I think so!
