In Memoriam: Phil Woods

Phil Woods 83.Many of you may not know who Phil Woods is but you have no doubt heard him, if only on a single, high-profile song played much on AM radio back in 1977. That song is “Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel. that song is off Joel’s extraordinary album, The Stranger (1977). And while the song itself is a great ballad, it is underscored by the equally beautiful saxophone heard throughout the song including the moving alto sax solo heard around the three minute mark.

Over the course of an illustrious career, Phil Woods has released more than 35 albums. His sax was sexy, sad, mood-altering, and guaranteed to pull tears from you as you listened to what can only be described as magic coming from an inanimate object. His ability to project his soul into the saxophone is part of what drew me to the instrument as one that can wash over me and put me into a trance. One listen to not only Joel’s “Just The Way You Are”, but also his brilliant “Blue Ballad” from his 1988 Phil Woods And Space Jazz Trio, attests to that.

The loss of Phil Woods is an enormous one. Few can create a feeling like Phil Woods could with his saxophone. And now, with him gone, it is a feeling of a void that permeates this sad day.

Let me suggest a play of “Just the Way You Are” (above) – paying extra attention to the Phil Woods sax parts – to not only mourn the passing of this great musician, but to also celebrate the fact that genius does exist among us from time to time.

Phil Woods.

20th Anniversary Expansion Of Second Toughest In The Infants, By Underworld, Planned For November

Underworld- Second Toughest In The InfantsUnderworld, a UK electronics music team, entered the music mainstream in the ’80s with a splendid debut set, Underneath The Radar (1988). Primarily the work of Karl Hyde, and Rick Smith. After a time, they were joined by Darren Emerson (who no longer is with the band). Their techno-based style of electronic dance music has been influential.

The music of Underworld has been heard not only by the band’s numerous album releases, but also in films, and found on subsequent soundtrack releases. Karl Hyde, Rick Smith, along with Darren Price, still perform exciting live shows today.

On November 20, UMe will mark the 20th Anniversary of the excellent Second Toughest In The Infants (1996) issue by Underworld by reissuing the album in several configurations, along with a new 2015 remaster. The new album is planned to be reissued on standard CD, a 2CD Deluxe Edition, a 4CD Super Deluxe Edition, and a 2LP vinyl set.

The extra CDs found on the Deluxe and Super Deluxe sets will pack in bonuses of remixed tracks, live performance tracks, non-album b-sides, and previously unreleased songs. The Super Deluxe Edition’s fourth CD provides an extended exploration of their famed Born Slippy (Nuxx), and features unreleased demos, live recordings, and alternate mixes (see track-list below).

While all of the editions will have informative booklets, the 4CD Super Deluxe Edition will provide a 60-page book of notes, credits, photos, and artwork related to this remarkable album title.

For those that may not know, Karl Hyde has worked with Brian Eno, releasing two albums in the process (High Life, 2014; Someday World, 2014). Get more here.

Wild Winter By Smoke Fairies Gets Wider CD Release In November

Layout 1For fans of Smoke Fairies, sometimes there isn’t just enough news to keep us happy. Last year, Smoke Fairies released a Limited Edition Christmas album, available by mail-order only. The album is called Wild Winter and featured ten brand new winter/Christmas-themed songs from the duo. It was released last year (read our announcement here). I’m not even sure if any remaining copies of its limited run of 1500 copies (CD), and 1000 copies (LP) are available to be had. But not to worry. Here’s why:

On November 20, the band’s label will make the album available on a wider scale. Full Time Hobby Records will reissue Wild Winter on CD for those of us who were unable to procure a copy. And let me tell you, the set is completely worth it. After all, it is Smoke Fairies.

You can read my review of the album from last year here.

Here’s the very edgy first song (“Christmas Without A Kiss”) to stream:

Wild Winter – Smoke Fairies

01 – Christmas Without A Kiss
02 – Steal Softly Thru Snow
03 – Three Kings
04 – Give And Receive
05 – Circles In The Snow
06 – Bad Good
07 – Wild Winter
08 – Snowglobe Blizzard
09 – So Much Wine
10 – All Up In The Air

New Bootleg Series For Bob Dylan Fans In November

I’m certainly late to the game for all serious Bob Dylan fans with this notice of the upcoming new volume in the Bootleg Series. But better late than never is as the saying goes. These Bootleg Series have been like gold to strong fans. In this edition, Volume 12, Legacy digs in deep for the period of 1965-1966. With that, there are several configurations of this set, referred to as The Cutting Edge.

Legacy Recordings will offer a 6CD Deluxe Edition for the deep fans. Those discs will contain well over a hundred tracks including multiple takes of “Like A Rolling Stone”, and an interesting rehearsal track of “Rainy Day Women #12 & #35”. There will also be a heavily truncated 2CD Best of Edition (see track-list below), and a collected 5LP vinyl set.

The Cutting Edge – 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series, Volume 12 is on the calendar for November 8.

[UPDATE] 5-Disc Staple Singers Box, Faith And Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976, Set For November

Staple Singers A Family Journey

[UPDATE] As promised, I said I’d be back with a cover shot, and a track list. You now have all there is to know about a great set! In addition to the demos, alternate takes, original finished tracks, and live cuts over 80 tracks, there is a bonus 7″ single with two tracks. This two track single represents the earliest known recordings from the family. The booklet coming with the set will boast new liner notes including some from Mavis Staples. There will be plenty of great photos as well as an extensive listing of the tracks found within. [UPDATE]

If you hear the name Staples, and you start to hum a familiar tune, chances are you know exactly who The Staple Singers were. Although their roots extends farther back than the ’70s, it wasn’t until 1971 when “Respect Yourself” splashed all over the radio airwaves boosting the song to a healthy and impressive landing at number 12 on the charts. But that was bettered when the now-popular band released the soul-satisfying “I’ll Take You There” with the other-worldly vocal delivery of Mavis Staples. You knew, you just knew, you’ve heard R&B/Soul perfection! That song hung on the charts for many weeks.

Unfortunately for us, most of the components of The Staple Singers are no longer with us, having moved on to better things. Mavis Staples is left. And she can still belt it out of the park!.

On November 13, Stax Records will release a 5CD Box set, Faith And Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976. It will plumb the depths of the wonder that belonged to the family, and was gifted to us in their many songs and albums. A Track-list can be seen below.

The Alan Parsons Project To Release 2CD 35th Anniversary Edition Of The Turn Of A Friendly Card

APP Turn Of A Friendly CardIn 1976, The Alan Parsons Project released their Tales Of Mystery And Imagination. It gave the band an immediate success that enabled them to sign a more lucrative label deal with Arista Records. The year after, they released the fine (and STILL my favorite) I Robot set. That album gave us “I Wouldn’t Wanna Be Like You”, with several other great tracks enjoying a heavy rotation on FM radio. Over time, the band released ten well-received all bums before calling it a day in 1987.

Over time, bonus materials, with some being unearthed using the mindset of an engineer, as Parsons was, made up several definitive editions of the classic albums.

In 2007, 2008, most of the band’s classic albums had been reissued as new remasters complete with nice booklets, and extra material. It may also be time again to revisit some of these classic.

Earlier, The Alan Parsons Project posted on their Facebook page, the plans to reissue The Turn Of A Friendly Card along with assurances that the new 35th Anniversary 2CD Edition will indeed be newly remastered. Some of the bonuses of the new reissue are listed to include 17 previously unreleased bonus tracks, including Eric Woolfson’s songwriting diary home demos. And that’s not all. There will also be ten bonus tracks (likley things we’ve heard before),new liner notes, printed lyrics, and photos.

This album will be released as a 2CD 35th Anniversary Edition, as well as digital download. Plus, there will be a Limited Edition vinyl 7″ featuring three single edits.

The 35th Anniversary Edition The Turn Of A Friendly Card by The Alan Parsons Project is planned to be released on November 6.

I’ll update as we get a track-list and other information.

Thanks to Kendal K for the heads up!

The 3CD The Ultimate:Redux Tommy Bolin Box Comes Back In January

Tommy Bolin The Ultimate ReduxTommy Bolin was a guitarist of great skill that was gone far too soon. In his course, he left behind a few recorded legacies like his time with Deep Purple, James Gang, and his own solo releases. Of course, we’re more than happy to have his Teaser (1975) album, and its followup, Private Eyes (1976). But like all fans of every band and artists, we always wish for more.

On January 8, Friday Music will be re-releasing a newly remastered 3CD Box of collected demos, and selected live tracks, all from the Tommy Bolin Archives. The Box, The Ultimate: Redux was originally released in 2008. Currently, 2008 released copies are sold out, commanding a nice chunk of change from third party sellers.

The Ultimate: Redux contains thirty-one tracks (see track-list below) that cover a lot of musical ground. With everything included, it is a grand slot into the library of any Tommy Bolin albums you may have. There may be other pieces of Bolin goodness out there, but with this Box, we get a nice complement of the creative process that Tommy Bolin used.

The included booklet contains the 2007 essay by Steve Vai, and has plenty of great photos of the late guitarist. If you don;t have this set, and wanted it, nows your chance to pick it up at a good price, bypassing the current exorbitant rates being charged for the 2008 issued box.

Friday Music To Reissue Carole King Debut, Writer, In Remastered Edition

Writer - Carole KingIn what is our FIRST 2016 post, Friday Music will be gifting all Carole King fans with an audio update of the fine Carole King Ode debut, Writer. Writer was originally released in 1970, starting off the new path that Carole King would follow for decades – that of a solo artist rather than just that of a songwriter for other people’s recordings. Of course, after the release of her breakthrough second album, Tapestry in 1971, Carole King would be a sought after singer-songwriter, who could translate her songs perfectly.

On January 8 of 2016, Friday Music will reissue Writer, newly remastered by Joe Reagoso, who remasters most reissue works for the label.

This new reissue will offer a booklet with original artwork, period photographs, and notes. This Limited Edition CD will be housed in digi-pak packaging.

I’m pleased to see this coming our way!

Volume Three: The Track Singles – The Who 45 RPM 7″ Singles Box For October

The Who Track Singles 1967-1973Currently, there are two exclusive 7″ Singles Box sets featuring the released Who songs. The first, The Brunswick Singles represented the 1965-1966 gestational period for the band. It included eight singles. It was followed by The Reaction Singles, which represented the year of 1966 with five replica 7″ singles. Both box sets were extraordinary collectibles for core The Who fans.

On October 30, Geffen Records will continue the collectible sets with a massive assembly of fifteen replica UK  7″ vinyl The Who singles on Volume Three: The Track Singles 1967-1973 (see track-list below). The years represented are 1967 through 1973.

The singles will be housed in a box with a lid, and will contain an informative 20-page booklet with memorabilia, and new liner notes about each of the fifteen singles included within.
