TAPSheet: Release Notes – 08/31/2015

In a previous post, I gave a hint of a Led Zeppelin title. Since, I’ve come across the tracklist of the CD being mentioned as having a release date of November 6, discovering that the list is the same as that of Mothership. Of course, that makes it a ‘best of” with the exact tracklist of Mothership. My guess is that it is just simply a “refill” of the album to the marketplace, or it’s a repackage. Regardless, it’s Mothership to all. It is important to note again that Mothership is on the calendar as a 4LP, 180g-weight vinyl reissue for the same November 6 date.

Other mysteries remain.

On November 13, continuing with the collectible David Bowie picture disc singles, Rhino and Parlophone will release a 40th Anniversary Golden Years” with the following track-list: “Golden Years” (Single Version) b/w “Station To Station” (Single Edit). Both the A & AA side features photos by Steve Schapiro, with the AA side a previously unseen shot. “Golden Years” is a 2014 remaster while “Station To Station” is a 2010 remaster.

DFA Records have a 12″ vinyl Maxi-single coming for LCD Soundsystem. Although the band is no more, it’s nice to see this track, originally issued back in 2004, coming back and cut in 45RPM vinyl. This disc will offer “Yr City’s A Sucker” (the full 12″ version), and an instrumental version of the same track. Fan collectible. (Side note: It’s a tremendous blast of fun to see the old ways being reconvened. The late ’70s, and the early ’80s offered such collectibles constantly. YAY!)

LCD Soundsystem Yr City's A Sucker

An update on the upcoming Natalie Merchant set, Tigerlily: The New Recordings, have a stand-alone CD of the new title being added to the LP, DD, and CD/DVD Deluxe Edition offerings. All sets are on the calendar for November 6. (Original TAP post here.)

Paradise Is There - Natalie Merchant

Sounds True Records will be offering a new October Project album, The Book Of Rounds, scheduled for October 30. The 21-track CD set are an accumulation of tracks designed to be affirmations and mantras for the assist of creating positive effects and personal transformations. The music can be sampled on YouTube. I’ve provided one – “Grace”- (which leads to others):

Chicago band, The Urge Overkill, whose cover of Neil Diamond‘s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” was effectively used in Pulp Fiction, recorded a six-track EP called Stull back in 1992. Stull contained the previously mentioned song. On October 30, Touch & Go Records will reissue it as a vinyl offering.

Urge Overkill Stull

On October 16, Dine Alone Music will release a new Alberta Cross album. The album is self-titled and follows five previously recorded sets including their Geffen (US) debut, The Thief & The Heartbreaker (here reviewed by me in 2007).

Spinefarm Records will release Pylon by Killing Joke, scheduling the album for October 23. Expected on CD, DD, and 2CD Deluxe Edition.

ATO Records will release a 3CD live set for Drive-By Truckers called It’s Great To Be Alive!. It’s planned for October 30.

DBT - It's Great To Be Alive!

Polydor Records will release a 6CD Live set for The Jam called Fire And Skill: The Jam Live, on October 30. The clamshell box contains each set in gate-fold wallet sleeves, and a hard-back book.

[UPDATE] 19CD Aretha Franklin Box, The Atlantic Albums Collection, Planned for October

ArethaFranklin Complete AlbumsThe Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has a massive legacy that incorporates hundreds of thousands of moments in the this great Rock and Roll ride we all enjoy. Not only are they evident in the many albums she has recorded, but also in the many collaborations, films, and other participations that have gone under the bridge of our lives for decades. With twenty Number One R&B hits including “Respect”, “Freeway Of Love”, “Spanish Harlem” (I ADORE this song!), “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, and others, along with eighteen Grammy Awards, Aretha is DEFINITELY one of our most important artists.

As promised, here is more information surrounding this massive 19CD Box being assembled for Aretha Franklin. The Box is being labeled The Atlantic Albums Collection. All 19 CDs will be individually housed in LP-styled mini-sleeves with each album’s original artwork displayed. All CDs will be gathered into a clamshell box.

Live At The Fillmore West will be offered in a Deluxe Edition.

This massive 19CD The Atlantic Albums Collection is currently slated for October 30.

Natalie Merchant Revisits Tigerlily With New Recordings

Paradise Is There - Natalie MerchantWhen Natalie Merchant left 10,000 Maniacs, she gave the world her well-received Tigerlily album. It was released in 1995, and it stills stands as her most significant work to date.

Tigerlily produced three hits for Natalie Merchant (“Jealousy”, “Carnival”, “Wonder”), and sold several million copies.

On November 6, Natalie Merchant will return to the songs that gave her a stronger voice all of those years back. Nonesuch Records plan to release Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings. The CD set will contain a bonus DVD which will provide a documentary of the recording of the original Tigerlily. It will be filled with live performances that surrounded the timeframe of Tigerlily, interview segments, and plenty of archival footage.

Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings is, essentially, a re-recording of the popular album. And if you remember, Joni Mitchell’s re-recording of “Both Sides Now” is a slower, more intense view from the original. As such, it is as potent as the original, if not more so. Natalie Merchant’s revisitation of  Tigerlily might provide a whole new nuance to the songs that elevated her. I’m going with the possibility that it can do that.

Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings will be made available as a CD/DVD Deluxe Edition, CD, DD, and vinyl LP. A pre-order of a limited edition vinyl LP with print autographed by Natalie Merchant has already sold out. (A word to vinyl enthusiasts: Don’t wait when the opportunity is there to buy your vinyl copy!)

Rhino To Release 10CD Lou Reed Set, The Sire Years – Complete Albums Box

Lou ReedAside from the cool news that Loaded, the Velvet Underground classic would be receiving a large dose of love, it always amazed me that the labels never went into their Lou Reed holdings after he passed away. I always thought that there would be some kind of love applied to not only the obvious – vis-à-vis Transformer, maybe even, Rock and Roll Animal – but to all of the brilliant Lou Reed solo library. I’m not a fan of much after The Bells, but still, all of his albums mean something to one person or another. I LOVE Sally Can’t Dance, and most people do not.

It never happened. We never got a re-visitation of any Lou Reed albums. I’m still saddened over this fact, even ashamed.

Nevertheless, Warner Brothers has assembled a complete Sire Years collection to be spread over ten CDs. I’ve only received notification on this today. Other than the assumption that the seven Sire albums (New York – 1989, Songs for Drella – 1990, Magic And Loss – 1992, Set The Twilight Reeling – 1996, Perfect Night – Live In London – 1998, Ecstasy – 2000, The Raven – 2003, Animal Serenade – 2004) will be included.

In 2014, Rhino released The Sire Years: The Solo Collection with six CDs. This year, Rhino will release the new set, The Sire Years – Complete Albums Box on October 30 in a “quirky” clamshell box.

Profile - Emmylou Harris

Autumn Tone Records will release the new album from the Chicago 3-member band,Yoko and the Oh No’s, planning the CD and LP releases for October 30. This band is interesting in that they are one of a few that mimic the late ’70s NYC indie styles of glam and abandon. And the lead singer is just graduated from HS. Looks like an early career start if they can maintain the interest. Check out the new album’s bluesy single video of “She Ain’t Mine” (below), and live footage of “James Baxter” from a Beat Kitchen club show (Chicago on Belmont). I’m impressed! And I like ’em!

Yoko And The Oh No's

The new and anticipated Paper Kites album, twelvefour, will be released on CD, DD on August 28, however, its vinyl version is being delayed until October 9. Delays in vinyl titles are being attributed to an overload of pressing requests at all available vinyl plants…in the world!

Loreena McKennitt Retrospective, The Journey So Far, Expands To 4CDs For October

The Journey So Far - Loreena McKennittThe music of Loreena McKennitt has soothed many a soul with its calm Celtic style. And there have been few who can deliver it as it needs to be sung and played. Loreena McKennitt is a class performer of the genre.

Released in early 2014, a 2CD retrospective set call The Journey So Far was released with 21 representative tracks. The first CD with its twelve selections highlights her eight studio albums.  The second CD uses nine live performances to highlight her 2012 Midsummer Night’s European Tour.

On October 9, UMe and Quinlan Road (Quinlan Road is a label owned by McKennitt for the sole purpose of releasing her own albums.) will release a 4CD Collector’s Edition of the popular set. What will be on the additional two CDs is unknown as of yet. As soon as I am aware of the inclusions, I will be sure to update this page.
