Led Zeppelin Reissues Continue With Led Zeppelin IV, Houses Of The Holy, Both In October

Well, a bit late to all this news (it happens…often), but in the interest of informing those who may NOT already know, here’s my coverage:

On October 28, Rhino Records and Atlantic Records plan the elaborate releases of two of Led Zeppelin‘s best releases (in my own opinion) in the ongoing series of Led Zeppelin expanded remasters, which started with with Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin III earlier in the year.

Here’s the break down:

LZIV CDLed Zeppelin IV came out in the dawning era of the ’70s (1971). Contained within the grooves are what I believe to be some of the greatest tracks ever recorded, which include “Rock and Roll”, and “Black Dog”. And while I’m one who think that “Stairway To Heaven” is overrated in comparison to those two tracks, there are many who would disagree. It’s there, too!

With the new reissue, Led Zeppelin IV will offer not only the anticipated audio update, but some bonus tracks on the second CD found in versions except the single CD issue. Unfortunately, the bonus inclusions are not compelling enough to swing the deal on a 2CD  (other than, perhaps, the alternate mix of “Rock and Roll”, which might lose its original flavor on subsequent replays). Nevertheless, the included bonus tracks are of interest to deep fans.

Led Zeppelin IV will offer:

Original Album

  • Black Dog
  • Rock and Roll
  • The Battle Of Evermore
  • Stairway To Heaven
  • Misty Mountain Hop
  • Four Sticks
  • Going To California
  • When The Levee Breaks

Bonus Audio

  • Black Dog (Basic track with guitar overdubs)
  • Rock and Roll (Alternate mix)
  • The Battle Of Evermore (Mandolin/Guitar mix from Headley Grange)
  • Stairway To Heaven (Sunset Sound mix)
  • Misty Mountain Hop (Alternate mix)
  • Four Sticks (Alternate mix)
  • Going To California (Mandolin/Guitar mix)
  • When the Levee Breaks (Alternate UK mix in progress)

The versions included will be a single CD, a 2CD set, a single LP, a 2LP set, the Super Deluxe Box, and DD.

LZIV 2CD  LZIV LP  LZIV 2LP

LZ HotH CDAlso being released on the same October 28 date will be my personal favorite of the Led Zeppelin catalog, Houses Of The Holy. Released in 1973, this set delivered the excellent “Over The Hills And Far Away”, “Dancing Days”, “No Quarter”, “D’yer Mak’er”, and well, the whole album really. With this fresh reissue, the original gets its audio makeover with new packaging, as well as a set of bonus tracks (again, not compelling enough by themselves. Where are the recorded outtakes that never made it to the album?).

Houses Of The Holy will provide:

Original Album

  • The Song Remains the Same
  • The Rain Song
  • Over The Hills And Far Away
  • The Crunge
  • Dancing Days
  • D’yer Mak’er
  • No Quarter
  • The Ocean

Bonus Audio

  • The Song Remains The Same (Guitar overdub reference mix)
  • The Rain Song (Mix minus piano)
  • Over The Hills And Far Away (Guitar mix backing track)
  • The Crunge (Rough mix – Keys Up)
  • Dancing Days (Rough mix with vocal)
  • No Quarter (John Paul Jones keyboard overdubs – no vocal)
  • The Ocean (Working mix)

As with Led Zeppelin IV, the offerings here include single CD, 2CD Deluxe, single LP, 2LP set, DD, and the Super Deluxe Box set.

LZ HotH 2CD  LZ HotH LP  LZ HotH 2LP

The offered flavors of releases will include a single CD (for those satisfied with just an updated audio disc) repackaged in gatefold digipak; a 2CD Deluxe Edition with original album, the bonus tracks disc, all repackaged in a gatefold digipak; the original album on 180g-weight vinyl LP packaged in original sleeve offering, a 2LP set with the second 180g-weight LP containing the bonus tracks; high definition Digital Downloads of all tracks; and the massive Super Deluxe Edition Box with the following benefits –

  • Remastered album on CD in vinyl replica sleeve
  • Companion audio on CD in card wallet featuring new alternate cover art
  • Remastered album on 180-gram vinyl in a sleeve replicating first pressing
  • Companion audio on 180-gram vinyl in a sleeve with new alternate cover art
  • High-def audio download card of all content at 96kHz/24 bit
  • Hard bound, 80 page book filled with rare and previously unseen photos and memorabilia
  • High-quality print of the original album cover, the first 30,000 of which will be individually numbered in 96kHz/24-bit

Sony Masterworks To Release New Jackie Evancho Album With Awakening

Jackie Evancho AwakeningThere are some people with extraordinary talent. Most often, those people are easily found simply because great talent cannot remain hidden under a rock, dormant. It demands to be heard. But sometimes, a great talent goes unnoticed until something strange happens. But, As I have said, that kind of talent eventually gets found out. This is true of Jackie Evancho, who was “discovered” an unlikely source, America’s Got Talent.

I have my issues with these kinds of shows. But they’re mine. However, with the magnificent voice of Jackie Evancho having come from the show’s fifth season, I have to say that I’m quite pleased that Miss Evancho is finally on the radar. Also, you should know, that Jackie Evancho is currently only 14 years of age. But with the voice she possesses, it’s clear that she is preternaturally equipped to become one of the greats in music.

On September 23, Sony Masterworks will release the fourth album from the mystical voice that can be heard on “The Rains Of Castamere” from HBO’s Game Of Thrones. That song will be included on this latest album called Awakening. It will join Jackie’s cover of U2’s “With Or Without You” on the set. Awakening will contain 12 tracks.

If you have NOT heard Miss Evancho, may I suggest finding a YouTube or Spotify stream. But please, sit down first. Her voice is not that that of a typical 14 year old. Nor was it a voice of a typical 10 year old either. But she possesses it. And it is magnificent.

Trust me!

In Memoriam: John Dawson Winter III

Of all of the sad news to receive this morning…

Johnny Winter RIP

Johnny Winter, my first real guitar hero, the one that I held the standard of everyone else to, has passed away.

Honestly, there is much to say. so much so, that to recount it here would take so many lines to write that I might not sleep for days. But, it is necessary to know that few played as well as he could. Oh yes, there are some in his company of skill…but not many.

I saw Johnny Winter at several crucial periods of his career. One time at ChicagoFest, and another at The Galaxy Theater in Costa Mesa. It was that Costa Mesa show that I took my two kids to see a legend in play, even if he had to be helped to the chair that he played on. It may be one of my greatest gifts to them, to give them the chance to see a legend before he was gone to us. And now that reality is in play.

From his first Columbia album, to the brilliance of Second Winter, his many live albums, and his deeply ingrained blues albums, Johnny winter continually set the standard high for music. What more can be said except that “…he used to carry his guitar in a gunney sack”, and “oh my, how that country boy could play…”.

One year, there was a family reunion that I wasn’t keen on flying to from California. Knowing how much I loved Johnny Winter, Mrs TAP used the ploy that Johnny would be in attendance as he was a member of the family somewhere in the line. I was quite skeptical as I should have been, but her insistence eventually won my trust. Of course, she was wrong (and my intuition was right), but she got me there.

Johnny, you were a hero from the start. And your music will live on in its history.

Thanks for every note you played!

Spilt Milk, Bellybutton From Jellyfish To Be Reissued In 2CD Deluxe Edition Remasters In August

Jellyfish Spilt MilkI think it might be safe to mention this release by now (I think).

Jellyfish was a band from San Francisco that entertained with their Power Pop style. And although they were s short-lived band, they left behind a world of goodness over two excellent long-players that include Bellybutton (1990), and Spilt Milk from 1993. And if you have heard any of them, you probably enjoy them a lot.

On August 25, Omnivore Records will release 2CD remastered Deluxe Editions of Bellybutton, and  Jellyfish Presents Spilt Milk.

Spilt Milk will contain on the first CD, the remastered original twelve tracks, tacking on six demo tracks. The second disc will delight with a collection of eleven more demo tracks, augmented with seven live tracks, and cherry-topped with “Think About Your Troubles”, and “Fan Club Message”.

The set will be released in digipak housing, and will include a booklet that features a booklet with photos, memorabilia, a new essay by Ken Sharp, and track-by-track commentaries of the original tracks by band members, Andy Sturmer, and Joseph Manning, Jr.

On Bellybutton, the first CD will feature the remastered original ten-track album, and completed with ten live performance tracks.  The second disc will include a whopping 16 demo tracks.  Like Spilt Milk, the digipak Deluxe Edition of Bellybutton will feature a booklet with photos, memorabilia, an essay by Ken Sharp, and track-by-track commentaries of the original album by Sturmer, and Manning.

Jellyfish Bellybutton

If you love great Power Pop like the kind that Cheap Trick, Queen, and other excellent Power Pop band of the ’70s, and ’80s presented to you, and you do not know Jellyfish, they are worth your discovery time. Absolutely worth the time!

Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here, Lowell George Solo Effort To Reissue In A Deluxe Edition In August

Lowell George ThanksLowell George was an important part of the Little Feat mystique. A strong part.  Once a member of Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention, George eventually formed Little Feat. That was back in 1971 when the first album by Little Feat was released. After the eponymous debut issued on Warner Brothers Records, there were six others with Lowell George, the last finished after his untimely death in 1979 at the age of 34. The last Lowell George fueled Little Feat was Down On the Farm (1979.) Of course, Little Feat would go on to release nine more LPs.

But Little Feat was not Lowell George’s entire existence. There was his one solo album, Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here was released in 1979, delighting a loyal fanbase. That album enjoyed a rich lineup of studio guests. Unfortunately, not long after release, Lowell George succumbed to heart failure. But his efforts live on in his music.

On August 25, Friday Music will reissue Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here in a remastered Deluxe Edition that will offer two bonus tracks (“Heartaches”, “What Do You Want The Girl To Do” – Mono 45 Promo).

Even better than this news is that Friday Music plans the remastering series of Little Feat albums.

Yeah?!
